Welcome to LST!

Striving for success without hard work is like trying to

harvest where you havent planted.

The road ahead presents significant challenges. In all probability

you are planning to give several entrance exams in addition to
your Boards and preceding rehearsal and selection exams. Rather
than wish away the work involved, it is imperative that you
approach it systematically and with a sense of purpose. Afterall,
it is this investment that will either bring you closer to a dream
and / or put you on a path of security and success. Your college
years go a long way in shaping you into the person you will
eventually become. The wonderful world of the law schools is
indeed a goal worth achieving.

The LST Basic Beacon Course (which is included in any LST

classroom course) is structured in such a manner as to minimise
inte rfe re nce with your school work and othe r re late d
commitments. This handbook serves as a key to the offerings
of the LST Basic Beacon Course something you can turn to in
the event of any doubt or confusion. It also gives you a clear idea
of what needs to be done and how were going to help you do it.

What The Exams Are About

The law entrance exams test students in five subjects Legal

Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, Mathematics, English and
General Knowledge. While the break-up of marks allotted to
each section varies from exam to exam these core areas are tested
by almost all the law schools. Unless the particular law school
expressly indicates that one or the other area is not going to be
tested on, the wiser solution is to prepare for all the areas.

The entrance exams consist of objective type questions and have

thier respective time durations.

CLAT has introduced negative marking from 2013.

The law school entrance examinations usually test you on a wide

gamut of areas. You must therefore pace yourself accordingly
because with so little time to spare, time management becomes
critical, as is the case with any competitive exam.

Admission notifications carrying important information about the

application procedure start being released as early as October.
Please check www.lawentrance.com for updates on admission
notifications and other college-related information. You will also
be receiving the information in your myLST messaging account.
myLST is discussed in great detail in a subsequent chapter.

The LST Experience

LST courses stem from a thorough understanding of the demands

of the entrance exams of the top law schools in India. Being
prepared for these entrance exams requires the right knowledge
and the correct orientation. LST courses are tweaked to give you
not just the knowledge but to provide the right atmosphere to
orient you positively for the series of exams.

The LST experie nce is not just about the e xhaustive and
easy-to-understand training material and the multiple mock tests,
it's also about the LST student community, Virtual Classroom,
LST forum, chat room and other offerings of www.lawentrance.com.

It has been our experience that some of the most positive inputs
have come in the form of comments of LSTians on the forum or
the chat room. From the forum you can get an excellent idea of the
level of preparedness of fellow aspirants and a good deal of
motivation as well.

As for the LST Team, we'll support you in every way we can,
throughout the year.

English
Why do Law School Entrance exams test your English
Language skills?

A profession in law is all about being able to think differently,

and being able to express your brilliant thoughts in a convincing
manner! It is therefore very important that you have a good grip
over the language, and are able to convince others of your point
of view! This is why the English section of the entrance exam
seeks to establish your competence in each of the following areas:
vocabulary
grammar
comprehension
verbal reasoning.

LST caters to each of these areas:

1. The LST English Module is based on the requirements

of the law school entrance exams as studied over the
last few years. The module caters to building:
- Familiarity with words, their meanings and usage
- Correct sentence construction
- Appropriate usage of words, phrases and sentence
forms in everyday English
- Reading Comprehension
- Skills of Verbal Reasoning to handle Para jumbles
and Analogies

Each element has been explained in detail with examples to

ensure that you grasp the essence of the language and also develop
the ability to solve the questions, as they present themselves in
the exams.

LST 2016 Replication or other unauthorised use of this material is prohibited by the copyright laws of India
Handbook 9

2. The English Work Book is a new introduction from LST that

provides the practice needed by aspirants in all areas of
linguistic skills. After having done the extensive range of
exercises in this module, you would have developed the ability
to tackle any type of questions on English in the exams.

The Word Power Guide is a ready-to-use indispensable book

that can be used as a constant companion. It will help you develop
the skills and knowledge necessary to use the English language
effectively. It contains an exhaustive list of useful words with
their meanings and parts of speech, collective nouns, phrasal
verbs, works often confused, cries of animals, some foreign words
and phrases and words used in the legal arena. Memorising the
Word List is not the only goal. What is required is a deeper
understanding of vocabulary, and building up on the same. This
will help you engage yourself with the words you are learning and
in doing so, make them a part of your active vocabulary. LST will
also be testing your vocabulary through fortnightly tests starting
July. You'd better be ready!

As a Law School aspirant, you will need a strong and clear

understanding of the English language. The English material
prepared for you should help you in the process, if, and only if,
you commit yourself to becoming a more involved and regular
'reader' - but merely picking up a book and enjoying the story
isn't enough! LST encourages 'active reading', which means that
you must stay alert, and make sure you understand each word
and phrase clearly - if you don't, you should immediately pick up
your dictionary and find it out after all, you're reading towards a
goal now! Language skills are best honed if they are put into
practice. Regular reading, English conversation and practice are
the steps you need to take to get the most out of this input. And
remember your English will improve only if you want it to, so
enjoy this portion of your preparations, and put in as much effort
as you can!
Welcome aboard the English Express!

General Knowledge

To prepare effectively for the General Knowledge Section of the

law entrance exams it's critical that you start as early as possible,
preferably several months in advance. There are no boundaries
to GK. Therefore it is virtually impossible to teach all that there
is to know in GK in the classroom. The online material can only
supplement what you have to do. While we provide a module
on basic General Knowledge, effective GK preparation must
include a big diet of external sources:

A) Daily reading of a good national newspaper

There is no substitute for serious reading of a good national
newspaper. For those of you in the south or in the metros, we
would recommend 'The Hindu'. Whilst reading the newspaper you
should keep an eye out for news pertaining to law, politics and
international affairs. A good example is news excerpts about the
Supreme Court, etc. We also recommend that you read the
e ditorials and the opinions to stre ngthe n your argument
structuring and essay writing. Maintain a scrapbook of important
news items.

B) Weekly reading of a national magazine

National magazines such as the Frontline, Outlook, The Week or
India Today present contemporary issues in greater detail and
you should choose to read any one of these magazines regularly.
The above two activities will help you to attempt the descriptive
portion of the GK section.

C) Newsletters and Supplements

Our Newsletters and Supplements are designed to meet law
entrance needs, so pay careful attention to them, since several
questions in past papers have come from our Newsletter and
Supplements.

Mathematics

The few mathematics questions asked in the entrance exams

are usually simple enough for any student to score full marks.
These 20 marks can act as a make or break for students at the
entrance exam.

While othe r subje cts are ofte n time -consuming and are
ambiguous, maths is one area where students can score full marks,
since it is usually clear whether the answer is right or wrong.

Many students believe that they can get through the exam without
studying maths. They have the notion that it is just 20 marks
that they can make up in other sections. But it's a fact that
students who do well in the maths section always end up with
higher ranks. The LST maths course aims to give you that extra
edge by giving you the best maths prep course.

The mathematics asked in the law entrance exams is Commercial

Mathematics involving topics like, Simple Interest, Compound
Interest, Profit and Loss, Ratio, Proportion, etc. that are done
at the secondary school levels. Questions are also asked on
Permutation/Combinations and Probability, which are taught
at the college level, but these questions are simple in nature.

The Maths modules are in two books - LST Mathematics and the
LST Mathematics Work Book. While the former will help you grasp
the fundamentals of all the necessary topics, the latter will give
you extensive practice to enable you tackle any maths problem in
the exam within the allotted time. The online maths quizzes will
hone your analytical skills.

The LST Mathematics book is only for those Beacon students

who need to strengthen their fundamentals, while the LST
Mathematics Work Book is for all LST students.

The LST mathematics course prepares you in such a way

that your basics get stronger and you are competent enough
to solve not only regular types of questions but also any
variant of them.

Logical Reasoning

Logic, like mathematics, does not need long hours of study or

rote learning; once the technique is understood, then with regular
practice one can very soon gain mastery over it. Our aim is to
help the student to understand and learn to use the correct
methodology to answer logic problems.
The Logical Reasoning section of the LST course is made up of
systematic and well-formulated chapters -
Basics of Logic
Deductive Reasoning
Critical Reasoning
Analytical Reasoning
Practice Questions
In each chapter, care is taken to explain the various technical
terms used so that students are familiar with the jargon used in
logical reasoning. All basic concepts and notions are clearly defined
in the beginning to prevent confusion at later stages. Even though
some aspects of logic can be confusing, all explanations given are
in simple language. All chapters contain model examples that are
demonstrated for precise and clear understanding. Every chapter
is followed by practice exercises with answers provided at the end
of the respective chapters. In addition to this, there is a mini-
mock series which will give you an insight into CLAT-type
reasoning questions.
The LST Logical Reasoning material is designed with certain aims
in mind. These include:
1. Ge tting an in sigh t in to logical reasoning and
arguments
2. Reading arguments closely and carefully in order to
identify the flaws and nuances in the reasoning.
3. Unde rstanding the concepts of logic and logical
reasoning.
4. Developing critical reasoning, to evaluate facts and to
arrive at an answer beyond the data present in the
question.
5. Developing the necessary language skills and flow of
thought required.
6. Understanding the rules of deductive logic.

Legal Reasoning

The se ction on Le gal Re asoning is de pe ndant large ly on

understanding legal principles and applying them correctly to
specific fact situations given in the question paper. Whilst the
legal reasoning section can be solved by careful scrutiny of the
facts and strong logical reasoning, being thorough with the legal
principles saves a lot of time, prevents confusion and gives you
the much-required comparative advantage.

Questions are asked from the following areas: Law of Torts,

Contracts, Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Administrative Law,
and Civil Procedure. Some new topics such as Environmental
Law, Intellectual Property and Family Laws are sometimes also
thrown in.

The legal reasoning modules will take you through not just the
basic theory but also a plethora of practice exercises as well.
Past LSTians have even used the legal reasoning modules whilst
in law school! Almost all the types of legal reasoning questions
that appear in the past years papers are dealt with exhaustively.

In addition to Legal Reasoning, you will have a lot of online

mate rial on Le gal Knowle dge and Aware ne ss. This will
complement your competence in Legal Aptitude.

Building your Strategy

First, Get the Right Frame of Mind

We can give you lots and lots of tips and strategies for preparing
better for the entrance exams, but first you have to change your
attitude about how you learn and how you think about learning.
And it all starts with vocabulary. Take out the words "I can't,"
"I tried, but," "It's too hard," "I'll never learn this" Your
new daily words will be: motivation, persistence, commitment,
discipline, achievement and success. Basically a new attitude.

You're confident because you feel good about yourself and you
feel good about yourself because you're dedicated, disciplined
and itching to get to law school. Change your attitude and you'll
change what you do and how you do it.

If you want to accomplish anything, it all starts with desire. Desire

gives you the motivation to do anything and motivation is what
changes your actions. Changing you actions changes your
outcome. Desire is the catalyst for success.

But what if you don't have much desire? Here are a few things to
take note of:
1) The law schools you are trying to get into are comparable to
the BEST LAW SCHOOLS in the WORLD they have beaten
the best of the best in what counts the most amongst the
most.
2) You are headed to institutions that don't just teach you skills
and impart knowledge to make a living, these institutions
teach you how to change lives, be leaders and leave a mark in
society.
3) You are headed to institutions that shape personalities,
where your peers and the community, as a whole, place as

LST 2016 Replication or other unauthorised use of this material is prohibited by the copyright laws of India
Handbook 21

much emphasis on sports and culturals as on academics

they WILL be the best five years of your life. You just have to
get there.
4) The top law schools give you multiple job prospects and you
WILL be choosing your path at the end of the five years rather
than being forced down one.
5) The past academic record of a student has little to do with
how he or she does in law school there are innumerable
cases where people with poor past academic records did
brilliantly in law school. You start afresh and take on the
world.
6) Law at the top law schools is that rare specie of education
that enables you to do so much more than law you are
bound to nothing and have access to everything pretty much
anywhere in the world you just have to reach for it.

So what are you waiting for? Get cracking!

Second, Focus on the End Results

Focusing on the end results is another way to help you get and
stay motivated. Tell yourself that each and every hour of effort is
going to be worth it. IT'S TRUE! If not now then never.

Third, Get Disciplined

Discipline is essentially doing what you may not particularly enjoy

doing to get the results you want. Think about this definition and
how many times a day you deal with this conflict. Discipline is all
about an ongoing battle between short-term gratification / fun
and long-term goals. Everyday you face these battles. Do I get
the fun now or do I sacrifice for something I want further down
the road? It's no wonder we often give in to our immediate desires.
It's there and it feels good at the moment. Unfortunately, not too
far down the road, you suffer the consequences of the weaknesses.
The key to getting disciplined is learning moderation. If you deny
yourself completely, eventually in a moment of weakness you're
going to loose control. So don't take it to that extreme. Go on and
watch that favourite half hour TV serial, but not every serial! The
psychology is that you are not constantly reminding yourself of

LST 2016 Replication or other unauthorised use of this material is prohibited by the copyright laws of India
Handbook 22

your state of denial but that you are in control of what you can
and can't indulge in. You are in control.

Fourth, Get Committed

Commitment is a state of mind. It's what keeps you making the

right decisions and prevents you from making the wrong ones.
Realise that at the end of the day if you REALLY want to go to the
best law school in India and probably get the finest all-round
education in the country then you can't fool yourself by cheating
on your preparation. Be sincere and committed. You'll get your
opportunities after the results and in law school to freak out and
reward yourself for the hard work.

Fifth, get started!

The law of inertia is: Objects in motion stay in motion, objects at

rest stay at rest. The busier we are, the better we operate. Keep
your momentum going and you'll find that work stops becoming
work and is just something you do. You will actually want to stay
active all the time. Let your momentum wear down, however, and
you'll find you have to kick-start yourself to get even the smallest
chapter done.

Sixth, Create a Plan of Action

Now that you have the right outlook on things, it's time to develop
a plan of action and make the necessary steps to ensure you
stick with it. Without a plan, chances are you won't follow through.
You can't do your LST course randomly. You have to:

1) Complete Module I before Module II - As regards the vocab

list, by the time Module II comes you must have identified /
ticked-off the tough words you didn't know.

LST 2016 Replication or other unauthorised use of this material is prohibited by the copyright laws of India
Handbook 23

2) You MUST read a good newspaper daily and read either

Outlook, India Today or Frontline regularly - You are seriously
jeopardizing your chances if you don't do this.
3) When you read the paper keep an eye out for legal / social
issue related news. Compile relevant article(s) and file it.
4) Tell yourself that after every Mock Test you will work on areas
that you had felt vulnerable in and WILL increase your
performance in the next Mock Test by at least 10% of your
previous mark.
5) Participate actively in the discussion forum - it's the only
way to ensure peer-to-peer interaction - there is nothing like
group interaction!
6) Visit the virtual classroom link on MyLST on
www.lawentrance.com at least once a week to stay aware of
clarifications, corrections, etc.
7) We will email you relevant announcements but if you've not
ke pt your e mail inbox in shape the n che ck your
'announcements' link in myLST.
8) Relevant articles and info will also be on the "Articles" portion
of myLST.
9) Time yourself when answering the sample papers try and
do the same paper over and over again in lesser and lesser
time period, even though you've worked out the answers
this helps tremendously.

Seventh, get the implementation right.

Weed out ineffective behavioural patterns:

Studying with the television or radio on;
Studying in an area full of distractions, noise and constant
interruptions;
Writing notes on anything available and not keeping them
organised;
Studying with friends who gossip more than reviewing or
discussing the material;
Procrastinating everything;
Not getting enough sleep, good food or exercise;
Not setting any kind of goals;

LST 2016 Replication or other unauthorised use of this material is prohibited by the copyright laws of India
Handbook 24

Implement effective study habits and behavioural patterns:

Separating study time and recreational time;
Studying in a quiet area without distractions;
Studying with a focused study group;
Taking notes while you are processing the information;
Keeping notes neat and organised so that they are useful for
reviews (Use the notepad that we gave you!);
Getting enough sleep and exercise and eating right;
Reading for meaning;
Setting goals;
Staying mentally alert and physically active;
Staying proactive (not procrastinating)

Try to set goals for each week and for each month. Goals should
become a normal part of your everyday life. It helps you to see
how much you've accomplished over time. If you keep a notebook
with all your goals, every now and then you can go back and look
over the week and month. You will be amazed at how much you've
accomplished and will be glad that you had created those
measurements and written records to chart and evaluate your
progress.

Finally, LST will be with you at every step, so do write in if you're

not getting something right!

LST Believes

Some wise words that we hold close to our hearts...

# "I am the Master of my Fate,

I am the Captain of my Soul."

# "You never really lose until you quit trying"

# "To be a champion, fight one more round"

# 'Winning is about hanging on when all else have let go'.

# You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order
to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision,
with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to
enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget
the errand."

Woodrow Wilson
28th President of the United States

# Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-
makers. The round heads in the square holes. The ones who
see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they
have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them,
disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing
you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things.
They push the human race forward. And while some may see
them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people
who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are
the ones who do.
