TRAINING

Production Safety Systems Training

Production Safety Systems Training (PSST) is a

self-contained interactive and simulation program
providing required T-2 Training Certication. After
an intensive three-year development schedule, the
Minerals Management Service (MMS), United States
Department of the Interior, amended the Federal
Register (30 CFR part 250, Subpart O) to allow the use
of this computerized interactive multi-media based
system for offshore safety systems training.

PSST can have a signicant impact on

a companys bottom line. The inherent
portability of the system means training may
take place anywhere, at any hour. Reductions
in travel cost, use of contract instructors,
and employee overtime mean big savings.
Under utilized discretionary time becomes
productive time. The average user completes
the course in 15 hours.

Stuck Pipe Prevention

Interactive & Conventional

Stuck pipe is a multi-million-dollar problem

for the drilling industry. Statistics show that
lack of communication and awareness on
the part of rig crews is a major factor in stuck
pipe incidents. The Stuck Pipe Prevention
Series (SPPS) is an interactive multimedia
course designed to improve the rig teams
understanding of stuck pipe, the physical
and economic impacts, and methods for
preventing and freeing stuck pipe. There are
six modules in this CD-ROM series: Impact,
Causes, Warning Signs, Prevention, Freeing
and a Drilling Simulator.

SPPS introduces the learner to the fundamentals

of stuck pipe. Interactive games and role-playing
activities familiarize learners with basic stuck pipe
concepts while emphasizing the use of correct
procedures and teamwork. Animated computer
graphics dramatically depict downhole conditions
that can lead to stuck pipe.

Stuck Pipe Prevention illustrates the most common

indicators of developing problems, and highlights
the importance of good communication and quick
action by the drilling team.

Communication and teamwork of the drilling operation are reinforced, along

with techniques to help prevent stuck pipe. In addition,
strong emphasis is placed on contingency
planning, procedures to free stuck pipe and
the minimization of additional sticking.

A Drilling Simulator presents scenarios that

challenge the user to apply techniques learned
in the various stuck pipe modules. The simulator
accurately represents the drilling controls on a
rig, providing valuable hands-on experience to
the student.

Safe Work Practices . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Safe Work Practices

Safe Work Practices (SWP) in oil and gas

producing operations is an interactive training
program designed to enhance the ability of
field personnel to recognize at-risk behavior
in the work place and modify that behavior
to avoid injury or incident.

The course consists of 4 sections: Introduction

(overview of Body Use and Position, Personal
Protective Equipment, Following Procedures,
Tools and Equipment; an Awareness of the
Working Environment); Incident Investigation
(users are shown the aftermath of two incidents,
asked to interview a witness and victim, analyze
the accident, and give an explanation of the cause);
Risk Assessment Exercise (users examine visuals
from job sites and identify at-risk behaviors); and
Risky Behavior (a game that challenges users to
guide a worker through a task without injury or
incident).

Kill Sheet Program

The Kill Sheet Program was developed to help drilling and workover
personnel calculate data to successfully control a well. This fully
interactive program allows personnel to enter pre-recorded well
data at the job site and the program makes the worksheet
calculations necessary to complete their tasks. The overall goal
was to eliminate mathematical errors while providing simple
and consistent well calculation methods. Drilling personnel
will be able to complete a (wait and weight) kill sheet.
Production personnel will be able to complete computations
to successfully bullhead a well. Students are trained to use

The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) Research and Special Programs
Administration (RSPA) requires pipeline operators (not necessarily their contractors) develop a
written qualification program to evaluate personnel and contractor ability to perform covered
tasks and to recognize and respond to abnormal operating conditions that may be encountered
while performing covered tasks. Contractors will be required to follow the operators written
plan. This is a performance-based qualification standard. The regulations can be found in 49 CFR
Part 192 Subpart N - GAS, and 49 CFR 195 Subpart G - LIQUID, which became effective October
26, 1999. While the final rules were published in 1999, operators were given until October 28,
2002 to complete the qualification of individuals performing covered tasks.

Is your company in compliance? Call today to find out how we can help you meet the requirements
and prepare your employees through the Pipeliner Training and Assessment Program.

24
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pipeliner Training Program

NCCER, in cooperation with American Petroleum Institute (API), has developed the Pipeliner
Training and Assessment Program (PTAP). The PTAP consists of Pipeliner Curriculum and Pipeline
Skills Assessments to qualify pipeline personnel under the Department of Transportations (DOT)
new regulation for Pipeline Operator Qualification. The Pipeline Assessments are tied directly to
NCCERs standardized Pipeline Curriculum and will determine qualification on selected covered
tasks as identified by API and the industry.

What issues do the Pipeline Skills Assessments

address?
Meet the demands of DOT and pipeline operators regarding
pipeline workforce qualifications

Identify the knowledge, skill, and overall qualification level of

the current pipeline workforce

Eliminate duplication of efforts and the burdens it places on

pipeline technicians

Increase technician credentialing opportunities and

workforce professionalism

Increase pipeline workforce involvement in training

Assist pipeline contractors in maximizing their training dollars

Enhance career opportunities and progression for

individuals within the pipeline industry

Expand workforce development resources to the pipeline

workforce

Improve the image of the pipeline industry

NCCER accreditation will elevate construction,

maintenance and pipeline training in the United States
by establishing a minimum quality benchmark for
training. This process will assist training organizations
in developing and/or improving standardized training
programs that effectively match their resources and
operating conditions while responding to the needs
of the industry. NCCER accreditation will recognize
training organizations that meet the minimum
standards of competence, warranting public and
professional confidence.

Quiz Maker . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Quiz Maker for Well Control

WCS is pleased to offer Quiz Maker, a computer program that
generates custom examinations for well control applications.
With Quiz Maker, managers and supervisors can create exams
that may be used as training and evaluation tools. Quiz
Maker also helps companies to meet the requirements set by
the Minerals Management Subpart O training regulations for
continuous testing and on the job training.

Supervisors, training departments and independent auditors

can select the type of questions to be compiled in the
quiz based on course level (introductory, fundamental or
supervisory), BOP stack qualication and certifying agency.
The questions can be focused on any specic area of well
control desired. Administrators are then allowed to select the
number of questions in any subject area that they wish to have
included in the exam.

Once the administrator has dened the parameters of the quiz

and the quiz has been generated, users are allowed to log-
in and take the exam. As users answer the questions, any
incorrect answer will direct the student into a remediation
section that covers the area specic to the question missed.
A nal report shows the topics and skills that have been
administered and assessed along with a nal grade. This
report offers companies a powerful tool to measure retention
levels of training and to identify areas where additional
training should be directed.

Quiz Maker can easily be used in eld locations, ofces

and training centers.
