The

Caretaker

A Radio Drama Written by Callum

Reeves
Treatment

Three friends go on an extreme adventure to the dark grounds of an

abandon building that used to be a terrorist training camp decades ago.
Of what they know its abandoned however when peering about in the
building and exploring signs recent incomings they get closer to coming
face to face with a physcopath living alone inside. Listen and ride along
the journey with them if you dare.
Narrative Structure
Exposition
The journey starts with Jason driving his new car to the abandoned
training camp along with jack and seb who he trusts as theyve all been
friends the longest. In the group jack is the most gullible out them all and
will believe anything therefore hes easily the one to be ganged up against
by Jason and seb. In the drama there are many moments of jack being
scared because Jason makes it out that there are people still there and
makes up scare stories. After short car journey they pull up to the
abandon building. Seb starts to feel similar to jack and Jason lead the way
into the unknown.
Conflict
The come across weapons in one of the first rooms and Arabic writing on
the wall. Before they know it noises start coming from no where next think
they know they shine there light through the window and theres a man
pointing to get out and he starts to run to the door which leads to the
room seb jack and Jason are in. While running through the building
tracking back their steps. The physcopath blocks the entrance and asks
them what they are doing her. Jack trys to explain but Jason tells him to
shut up and they end up being let out although when jack steps out a gun
falls out his trousers that he had taken from the room and the man looks
down at the weapon and questions him he then goes back in and all three
of them run into the car and the stereo comes on. Jack the hears
something and tells Jason to turn the music off.
Resolution
Before they know it the killer physco runs towards the car with a chainsaw.
it ends with Jason shouting and the car struggles to turn on. The drama
ends with the ignition still running.
Cliff hanger ending

Genre
Its appropriate to the genre of a Horror because it includes a chase scene
which creates tension. Furthermore its set in an abandon building at night
time therefore there is a constant edge for something to be round each
corner which creates further tension therefore it undergoes a horror genre.
Format & Narritive
The format of my Radio Drama will be a single play therefore it will be a
one off standalone drama, However depending on the success of the
drama there is an open ending in order to make the drama a serial.
Therefore, it will fit into both formats. The open ending will not hinder the
end of the drama because it was planned to have the cliff hanger. This
was to make the audiences imagination fill in end and leave them thinking
the worst of what could happen. The Narrative of my drama will be linear,
there are no side storys because the drama progresses with real time.
This makes the drama seem more realistic and will appeal to my target
audience more specially as it is a Horror. My Narrative will also be
appropriate to when the radio drama will be aired. This is because my
drama is aired at 9o clock at night which is the same rough time they go
to explore the abandon building. This enables the audience to feel more
involved and are almost taking the journey with them as they listen in to
the drama.
The station will be Radio 1 because it is a more informal station and is
perfect for my target audience. My target audience is 16-21 year olds
(similar age to the charcacters) and stated on the Radio 1 website it says
their target audiences is between 15-29 year olds. Therefore it fits in
perfectly.
The overall demographic of my audience would be socio group E, which is
the un employed, students in education that have more time to follow
such interests like visiting abandon places. Having similar interests and
the characters in the story means they will relate to certain situations and
feel more immersed the drama itself.

Character 1 (Jason)
Kyle is an 18-year-old student who is almost the lead of the group as he is
older and more mature and speaks received pronunciation. He enjoys the
thrill of exploring. Kyle is the one who comes up with the idea of going to
an abandon building. Jason is stereotypically the Character that acts cocky
but get things right and close friends get frustrated at him for it. Deep
down he is a sensitive character and looks out for his mates as seen in the
radio drama.
Character 2(jack)
Luke is 17 and is the youngest out of the tree and is easily picked on by
Jamie and Kyle through the lack of common sense that jack has. Luke is
also a student and has known jack and Kyle for most of his life. His
hobbies is gaming and he plays football for his local team. Overall Jack is
the standard Mcluvin type of character (a famous reference to the
teenage film Superbad. Just like Superbad Luke is the character that
thinks differently to everyone. Although saying this he does have his rare
smart moments in life. We see this through his knowledge of guns, which
is his driven passion because his dad would always go to the gun range
with him.
Character 3(Seb)
Jamie is 17 and is similar to Jason and loves going out exploring places,
He also enjoys the thrill of going out exploring places nearby that are
haunted. James also has a passion for photography and so does the actor
Seb. This was useful because it meant when he was talking about taking
photos the character had the same mannerism as a photographer. He is
stereo typed as the other guy, who doesnt want to get involved in any
arguments as seen in my radio drama. Even though he is adventurous,
deep down he does get scared like Luke and tries hard to avoid this trait
so Kyle wont pick on him too.
3 teenage male characters
All my main characters are young males 17-18 and so are my actors (Seb,
Jason and jack). This means my dialogue of the characters will be
consistent and there will be no accent or lowing of their voices which
minimises mistakes and retakes. The Drama is set in southern England
and all of the characters and actors have a southern Accent. The was the
audience will tell the difference between the characters will be the tone of
their voices. Jack has a more of a croaky voice when talks, Jason speaks
quieter than the others and Seb has a soft tone to his voice. All actors fit
perfectly for each individual character they play. This means my dialogue
will be at its best quality and will be realistic for the people to listen to.
Character 4 (josh)
Caretaker is a man in his 30s with a husky voice; He has been living in
the abandon building for just a year. He previously served in the military.
After coming out head hasnt been in the same way and he now lives
inside this building. The actor Josh has an Irish accent and has a young
sounding voice however he can push the boundaries and put on a really
realistic middle aged man with a husky voice.
Budget
Actor: For a 5 min production for 4 Actors = 167 per person so 501 for
the three teenagers. Three voice actors are active throughout the while
drama therefore they cost more to hire.
https://www.voices.com/resources/rates
Caretaker role = 139
Due to the caretaker having sensually less lines the recording time will
only be two minutes
Total cost 640
Free Sources
Sounds are sourced from free soundboards and I create my own sounds
with a zoom microphone.
Car door was used with the Zoom Mic
Engine ignition was used with the Zoom Mic along with the keys that were
rattling near the end of the drama.
If I was to buy these sounds my budget would be a lot hire and my overall
aim was to have my budget for voice actors higher to get high quality
dialogue. However everything else budgeted to the bare minimal to keep
the subtotal lower.
