Community members are invited to at-
tend the first ever Town of Strathmore in-
formation open house on April 10 from
4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Strathmore Civic
Centre.
The Information open house will be
filled with displays to showcase the town’s
plans for their Canada 150 projects that
coincide with Canada’s birthday.
“We are holding an open house to let
the public know what we are doing for
big projects this year,” said Jennifer Sa-
watzky, municipal clerk for the Town of
Strathmore.
Showcased projects will include plans
and displays for Strathmore downtown re-
vitalization. Planned improvements in the
town’s parks – Kinsmen Park, Gray’s Park
and Lambert Park – include new energy
efficient lighting, playground upgrades, a
community pavilion, pathway connectivi-
ty upgrades and a lake clean up.
There will also be several facility up-
grades, including plans for the aquatic
centre to provide mobility access to the
second floor, enclosing the water slide so
it can be used year-round, and the addi-
tion of a steam room and sauna.
The library and farmers market building
will also receive some upgrades which
will be detailed on April 10.
At the open house, the town will show-
case plans for the new K-9 public school
and the new regional recreation facility
fieldhouse.
“There are a lot of big capital projects
that we want to showcase and show the
public what we are doing this year,” said
Sawatzky.
Also at the event will be information
from town departments on different pro-
grams and services offered, and the RCMP
will have a recruitment booth.
Town vehicles will be on display, in-
cluding graders and fire trucks. There will
be a kid’s zone with different things for
kids to do surrounding the Canada 150
theme.
“This is being done with the public’s tax
dollars and so it’s good for them to know
what we do, see how much actually goes
into the community and what council’s
plans are for the community,” said Sawatz-
ky. “It’s a great way to stay informed and
to know what is going on.”
The event will include refreshments and
door prizes.
“This is the first time we’ve ever done
this so we are pretty excited about it,” said
Sawatzky. “There are some pretty major
big things happening so we thought it’s
great for the community to know what we
are doing for them.”

Air cadets build homes for birds

Strathmore’s Gray’s Park will be home to even
more species of birds, thanks to the Strathmore Air
Cadets who participated in a citizenship day proj-
ect that involved putting together, painting and in-
stalling 45 bird houses on April 1.
In recent years, the air cadets have been seen
cleaning up several of the parks in town. This year,
with the help of the Town of Strathmore and the
Strathmore High School, they decided to do some-
thing a little different and a little more fun for their
community service project.
The Strathmore High School shop teacher cre-
ated bird house kits for the air cadets to assemble,
and the Town of Strathmore put up 13 posts along
the path in Gray’s Park for the cadets to put their
bird houses on.
The air cadets spent the morning building the
bird houses from the pre-made kits, and then they
painted them in an array of bright colours and fun
designs. While they waited for the paint to dry,
they walked the path in Gray’s Park picking up
trash.
The air cadet officers decided to make the day
more exciting for the cadets by arranging some
“survive Strathmore” scenarios and tasks that had
the cadets using their first aid training to take care
of some made-up minor emergencies.
“This is different (for the cadets) so anytime we
do something different, it sparks a little more in-
terest. We like changing things up, it helps us get
more engagement,” said Strathmore Air Cadets
commanding officer Capt. Jon Peters.
The Strathmore Air Cadets currently has over 50
cadets enrolled in the popular program.
“One of the aims of the air cadet program is to
promote good citizenship and leadership in Can-
ada’s youth,” said Capt. Peters. “One of the things
we do as part of our training program is to dedi-
cate time to citizenship or community service ac-
tivities.”
The Royal Canadian #903 Air Cadet Squadron of Strathmore
came out in full force on April 1 to clean up Gray’s Park. The
Cadets also built and painted 45 birdhouses and attached
them to 13 wooden posts that the town placed in the park to
attract birds to the conservation area. Manny Everett Photo
Recently, there has been more components add-
ed to the environmental stewardship part of the
air cadet program, and Capt. Peters has made sure
to keep on top of the new program guidelines.
“We’ve had guest speakers come to talk about
environmental stewardship and caring for the
planet. That is another part of the clean up as well,
making sure we keep our park areas nice for ev-
eryone,” he said.
Citizenship day is part of the mandatory training
program for the air cadets. It is funded by the De-
partment of National Defence (DND), which pro-
vides the cadets with lunch and pays for any extra
costs. The local squadron sponsor committee paid
for the rental of using the agriculture grounds and
for the materials used to build the bird houses.
Even though a community service project is man-
datory, most of the cadets enjoy being able to help
clean up the community and to help give back.
“It will give some nice places for the birds to live
and it will be a nice feature to the park. It’s always
nice to give back where we can,” said Capt. Peters.

HCC participates in famine TY’s Peek-A-Boo’s

The seventh annual Holy Cross Col-
legiate (HCC) 25-hour famine saw
around 90 students willingly fasting for
25 hours on March 31 and April 1.
The famine raised money for Chal-
ice, a Canadian Catholic charity that
sponsors children and does community
projects in other countries.
The event ties into the school and the
Christian tradition of Lent.
“Part of the Christian tradition (dur-
ing Lent) is you try to pray more, fast
and give whatever money you save
by fasting to those in need,” said HCC
teacher Tomas Rochford, who has over-
seen the event since its origin. “So, we
try to fit all three things into this one
event to very concretely do prayer, fast-
ing and giving to charity.”
The 25 hours of fasting started on
Friday morning, March 31, at 9 a.m. Af-
ter several hours of attending regular
classes, by 2 p.m. students were partici-
pating in numerous activities, reflection
periods and prayer. They participated
in sports activities in the gymnasium,
watched videos, played cards and
board games, and created art.
During the 25 hours, students did
consume water and clear juices to keep
their energy up.
“There were a lot of different things
that the students could do. Then Sat-
urday morning they had to clean the
school and at the same time they were
smelling the wonderful feast being
cooked by the parents,” said Rochford.
“They learn sacrifice and waiting for
good things.”

Over the past three years, the school
has pledged $15,000 to Chalice to help
build a school in Cameroon. The goal
this year was to raise the remaining
$1,800 needed to build the school – but
over $2,000 was raised from donations
this year.
Another $2,000 was raised by stu-

The Gleichen and District Commu-
nity Association will be hosting a com-
munity drop in event on April 25 from
1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Gleichen Com-
munity Hall.
This will be the start of a weekly
event in Gleichen that focuses on get-
ting members of the community togeth-
er.
The first drop in event is a day to
gather community members to discuss
what they would like to do for activities
and events throughout the following
weeks. Snacks and refreshments will
be provided.
A yearly membership with the associ-
ation will cost $2, to help cover the cost
of insurance. During the first drop in
event there will also be a $2 fee, which
may or may not be a cost for each drop
in, depending on the first meeting.
“The idea stemmed from hearing
community members saying there was
nothing in the community. The clos-
est place to do community activities is
Strathmore,” said Eliza Anderson. “The
idea has grown from there. We want
to see what the community members
want.”

No-charge energy savings program

Residents of Strathmore and area can
apply now to receive several new en-
ergy-efficient products for their house-
hold at no cost.
Energy Efficiency Alberta recently
rolled out a program that allows inter-
ested households to submit an appli-
cation that will allow them to receive
benefits as part of the Residential No-
Charge Energy Savings program, which
uses money collected through the car-
bon levy to invest in creating a more
energy efficient Alberta.
The $21.5 million one-year program
will enable interested households, re-
gardless of their income or housing
type, to have energy-efficient products
provided free of charge and installed
by qualified agents who will schedule
home visits to remove old products and
install new ones.
Energy efficient replacements can
include: LED products to replace exist-
ing incandescent nightlights, lightbulbs
and exit signs; high-efficiency shower
heads; faucet aerators if no aerator is
present; advanced power bars; and
smart (self-adjusting) thermostats to re-
place non-programmable thermostats.
“You replace inefficient products
with efficient products. There is not
a set limit per household,” said Brian
Wittmeier, press secretary with Envi-
ronment and Parks.
People who sign up for the energy
savings program will start receiving
calls in April to schedule home visits.
Home visits will be provided by Ecofitt,
a third-party service provider hired to
manage the program.

A panel on energy efficiency with
Energy Efficiency Alberta considered
possible energy efficiency program-
ming. They then produced a report
which commended different programs
that could be invested in and that En-
ergy Efficiency Alberta could imple-
ment.
“Currently there are four programs
listed but there will be more in the fu-
ture,” said Wittmeier. Other programs
include a Residential and Commercial
Solar Power Program that includes up
to a 30 per cent rebate of your costs
when you install a solar photovolta-
ic system in your home or business,
which was launched on Feb. 27; and
upcoming plans for a Residential Retail
Products Program that will offer incen-
tives when purchasing energy-efficient
appliances and other energy-saving
products at participating retailers and
contractors; and a Business, Non-profit
and Institutional Energy Savings Pro-
gram that offers incentives and rebates
once approved high-energy efficiency
heating or lighting products are in-
stalled in organizations.
A total of $625 million from the car-
bon levy will be dedicated towards all
programs through Energy Efficiency
Alberta.
“This is to help Albertans save money
and keep more money in their pock-
ets,” said Wittmeier, who added that,
on average, Albertans will save over
$112 a year from the no-charge energy
savings program alone.

Backyard Bounty program launched

Strathmore Communities in Bloom hosted their first ever ‘Backyard
Bounty’ where 35 interested gardeners listened to speakers teach
about urban farming, creating and maintaining gardens, about compost
benefits and about Strathmore’s community birth forest and commu- Unit D,
nity garden programs. Huxted Waste Disposal spoke on compost and
about their hopes to start collecting organic waste from households in
202 Canal Court,
Strathmore. Huxted’s will be speaking to council on April 10 about the Strathmore, AB
possible new program which would see approximately 10lbs of organic
waste collected from houses each week composted instead of thrown
out. Participants entered draws for gardening door prizes and everyone 403.934.6044

future the Backyard Bounty hopes to see participants crop swapping
their produce harvests.

Millarville-Stockland 4-H Beef Club
The Calgary 4-H region had three public speak-
ing and three presentation competitions at the
Strathmore Civic Centre March 25.
The regional competitions are the fourth level of
competition for these 4-H members. This is the last
level of competition for the junior and intermediate
members, while the top two senior members con-
tinue on to the provincial 4-H competitions.
The Calgary 4-H region consists of five districts
as far west as the Alberta-B.C. border, as far east
as Kneehill County, as far north as Innisfail, and
as far south as Cayley. Each district sends forward
their top two competitors in each age category and
competition event.
Juniors are aged 9 to 11, intermediates are 12 to
14 years old and seniors are 15 to 20 years old. A
total of 51 4-H members competed at the regional
event.

Liberal budget a disappointment for Canadians

Martin Shields, Member of Parliament for Bow
River, is disappointed for Canadians with the Lib-
eral budget introduced in the House of Commons.
“The massive deficits that the Liberals have cre-
ated are very concerning to me and to many con-
stituents who have contacted my office,” said M.P.
Shields. “We should not be adding debt to our al-
ready maxed out credit card. We are leaving the bill
to our children and our grandchildren.”
The budget continues to bury Canada in deficits
that will take decades to pay off. It does not address
numerous crises, such as the issue of high unem-
ployment in Alberta, or the issues in our energy

battle meant for Canada hid-
den in the artwork. The date

dian attack was set to begin
at 5:30 a.m. on Easter Mon-
day, April 9, 1917. The Ca-
nadian parliament building
is in the background of the
picture and on the top of it
is the Canadian flag, which
wasn’t yet created when the

are the modern Canadian military hold-
ing the military traditions. And lastly,
the focal point is the split Canadian
leaf on the memorial, symbolizing how
Canada was split in their values and be-
liefs before the battle as Quebec and
some other parts of Canada didn’t want
to fight.
Although there are many complex
elements to the artwork, Guterson,
ever humble, admits that he is insecure
about his artwork and that after visiting
the military museum and seeing all the
great oil paintings of the war, he was
embarrassed that he created one digital
image and is being so highly praised
and recognized for it. He does admit
he is still proud of how historically ac-
curate the piece is and that he did it to
honour his family.
“You can’t honour your grandfather
and not do the best job you can,” said
Guterson. “I wouldn’t show this piece if
it was not correct.”
The artwork will be painted onto a
cake for the Strathmore Legion’s 100-
year Vimy Ridge anniversary celebra-
tion on April 9.
The Canadian Mint is in discussion
with Guterson about the possibility of
the image appearing on a coin in the
future.
The piece may be shown at the Telus
Vimy Ridge, Battle of Hill 70, and Pass-
chendaele honouring, and the Ottawa
war museum is also interested in dis-
playing the artwork.
But Guterson’s main hope for the art-
work is a tall order.
“My goal is to get the piece hung in
Vimy, France at Canada’s newest build-
ing near the site of the Battle of Vimy
Ridge monument,” said Guterson, who
is in contact with the Vimy Foundation
to try to accomplish his goal.
Guterson is proud to have created an
image to honour his family and their
military background and to raise mon-
ey for people in the military.
“It’s one of the most complex pieces
I’ve ever undertaken, but I’ve done the
best job possible,” said Guterson. “I am
proud of how it represents Canada be-
cause it is a Canadian battle, it is Cana-
dian history and it’s the pride of being
a Canadian.”

Strathmore Children’s Festival returns for fifth year

The Strathmore Children’s Festival
will be coming back for its fifth year,
bigger and better than ever.
This year the event will be held at
the Strathmore Curling Rink on May 6,
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers ex-
pect about 1,300 people to attend the
festival this year.
According to organizer Marci Hira,
the day will be packed with entertain-
ment, activities, market vendors, con-
tests and plenty of things to do for the
whole family. Geared to families and
children up to age 12, the event is free,
although food and monetary donations
will be accepted.
Lunch is available during the event: a
Humpty’s exclusive mini menu of food
items and beverages for a reasonably
discounted price.
Event-goers can bid on silent auction
items, purchase raffle tickets, and visit
with local entrepreneur market ven-
dors.
For the children, a Disney princess
will be in attendance, and there will
be special appearances with Chase and
Marshall from Paw Patrol. Calgary’s
most kid-friendly magician, Christo-
pher Cool, will also be doing two very
special magic shows.
There will be a colouring, a hula
hoop contest, a cupcake eating contest
and a baby crawling contest.
“It’s a day to bring families together,”
said Hira. “We live in a busy world with
lots of stress and chaos, and I think it’s
very important for a family to come to-
gether and have fun.”
Several in-kind sponsors will also
be donating their time and resources
to make the day special for everyone.
Sweet Pea Photograph will be taking
one free family picture per family as
well as pictures with Paw Patrol. Two
stylists from Bangles will be creating
princess hair for the little girls at the
festival. Angela and Sara Hitch will be
doing face painting and tattoos on the
festival’s littlest attendees.
Hira is working with the Strathmore
Fire Department to try to have a fire
truck present.
“The focus is to get the community
and families to come together for a
day that is as free as possible, to raise
awareness of local organizations and
entrepreneurs, and to raise money to
donate back to local organizations,”
said Hira.
Any food donations collected at ad-
mittance will be donated to the Wheat-
land County Food Bank. Monetary
donations will go to School Fuel and
to one other club chosen by the pub-
lic. Last year both School Fuel and the
Strathmore Youth Club each received
$450 from the Children’s Festival.
This year’s financial sponsors include
Humpty’s Strathmore, Western Finan-
cial Group Strathmore and Lion’s Club
Strathmore, which donated a combined
$3,800 towards the Strathmore Chil-
dren’s Festival.
“It is all funded through our mone-
tary sponsors,” said Hira. “If it wasn’t
for them, this festival wouldn’t be hap-
pening.” She added that with table
rentals, about $4,200 has already been
raised and most of it will be going back
towards charities and non-profit orga-
nizations in the community.
Hira places high value on philanthro-
py and giving back. In 2015, she started
the Strathmore Community Care Club
(SCCC), which is a group with about
130 members that does four or five dif-
ferent activities a year to help the com-
munity out, such as: filling Christmas
hampers, donating back-to-school sup-
plies to children in need, and a super-
hero cleanup to clean up Strathmore’s
parks and streets. Her goal is to have
the Children’s Festival as a project of
the SCCC next year.
“I’m just really big on giving back,”
said Hira. “I want to make a fun day
and give families something to look for-
ward to.”
Hira is looking for volunteers to help
with setting up, cleaning up, and run-
ning things throughout the day. She
is also seeking item donations for the
silent auction and raffle prizes. If you

This powerful play, di-
rected by Paul
F. Muir, tells the
story of Mat-
thew Shepard,
a 21-year-old
University of
Wyoming stu-
dent. In October
1998, he was ab-
ducted, tied to
a fence, beaten
and left to die.
It turned out
Matthew was
murdered be-
cause he was gay.
A month later, a team
from Tectonic Theatre Proj-
ect came to Laramie to in-
terview townspeople about
the incident. The script of
The Laramie Project is taken
from those interviews.
This show is performed by
10 second-year students and
three graduates of Rosebud
School of the Arts, each of
whom plays multiple char-
acters. We might expect stu-
dents to perform different
roles simply as variations of
their own personalities, but
that’s definitely not the case.
Each actor gives an engag-
ing, distinctly different per-
formance of each character.
Days later, some perfor-
mances still stand out in my
memory: Anna Dalgliesh as
the first officer on the scene,
Heidi MacDonald as the cab
driver, Zach Running Coy-
ote as the straight actor who
performed the role of a gay
man, and Mikayla White-
house as the bartender, one
of the last to see Matthew
alive. Matthew Oliver van
Diepen also gives a convinc-
ing portrayal of the pitiable,
unrepentant killer.

of funny moments, because
even in crises, people say hi-

Much more than that, it’s a
story about choosing to love
those who are different than
we are. It’s a story about
choosing to show kindness,
even to those who’ve hurt
us. And it’s an inspiration to
nurture in ourselves and in
our children the belief that
every human being is pre-
cious and deserving of love.
I believe this is the most
important play I’ve seen for

La Leche League provides support in Strathmore

Times Reporter La Leche League is for new and ex-

al organization with trained volunteer
leaders to provide experienced moth-
er-to-mother breastfeeding support
through a variety of programs.
A Strathmore La Leche League Can-
ada (LLLC) group was formed over a
year ago, to provide support and help
new mothers in the area.
“We don’t give any actual medical ad-
vice but we do provide evidence-based
information to support the mothers so
they can make their own decisions and
take that information to their doctors to
discuss as well,” said Strathmore LLLC
leader, Angela Meyer.
Meyer started the group in Strath-
more because after she had her first
son, she had to travel to Chestermere
to attend a LLLC group.
“I regularly attended meetings there
and got most of my training through
the leaders at that group,” she noted.

to instruct.
“I like that we are all creating togeth-
er, all ages and skills over four days,
totally immersed,” said Myers. “(It’s) so
good to see the older kids take on help-
ing and sharing what they know (with
the younger kids).”
During the week, participants will
work on several different projects,
while using different skills such as
drawing, painting, clay, writing, tex-
tiles and learning how to look at the
environment. They will also be work-
ing with power tools for some of the
projects.
“We work on quite a few projects.
Some are put together in a way that
builds into another. We will work with
temporary art as well as some science
and art,” said Myers. “I like to get across
to the kids that creating is not only in
making art, but can be a part of every-
day living.”
The camp is aimed at children aged
six to 12. The fee is $40, and hours each
day are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants
bring their own packed lunch and

Life-transforming trips You’re Invited

Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA) stu-
dents took their annual theatre trips in
February, with first-year students visit-
ing Canada’s west coast, while second-
and third-year students traveled to Lon-
don, England.
“To see the transformation that hap-
pens with the students on these trips is
incredibly rewarding,” said Paul Muir,
RSA education director, who led the
London trip. “I wish every person out
there who supports not only our trip
fundraiser ... but everybody who sup-
ports Rosebud by giving a donation or
buying a ticket to the theatre ... I wish
everybody could experience what I ex-
perience when I watch this transforma-
tion.”
First-year students spent 10 days in
Victoria and Vancouver, taking work-
shops, doing a backstage tour of Belfry
Theatre, and seeing shows in Victoria,
Chemainus and Vancouver.
The second- and third-year students
took workshops in London, and Edin-
burgh, Scotland, did backstage tours of
London’s National and Globe Theatres,
and toured Edinburgh Castle. In both
cities, they saw shows together and in-
dependently, with some students see-
ing up to 15 shows in two weeks.
“There’s something about seeing
world-class theatre,” said Muir. “That
makes students go, ‘Wow! Okay! That’s
it! That’s where the bar is!’”

As the best team all season, the Wheatland Chiefs
validated their greatness by winning the organiza-
tion’s first provincial championship.
The Chiefs accomplished something that they, along
with the peewee Braves and bantam Warriors, have
been vying for for the past 25 years.
Once the echo of the final buzzer ceased in their
8-4 win over the St. Albert Crusaders April 2 at the
Pason Centennial Arena in Okotoks, the local double-
A midget team was able to celebrate the monumental
moment with fans spanning decades.
Players hugged friends, parents, babies, teammates,
coaches and managers.
You didn’t have to speak with anyone from the as-
sociation at any point this year to know what their
goal was. You could tell by the way they treated the
first period.
“Tonight was an energetic performance and fun to
be a part of,” said Chiefs head coach Evan Barlow.
“They have been looking forward to this game for a
long time and they were ready for it once it finally
came.”
The Chiefs ambushed the Crusaders, scoring five
times in the opening frame.
“We were really pumped before the game,” said
Chiefs defenseman Kelton Travis. “We were probably
more excited than nervous, because we knew we were
going to come out flying.”
Chiefs captain Ryan Bell got things going at the 1:57
mark when Lucas Muenchrath dug the puck out from
the corner and spotted Bell in front of the net.
Kale Clouston put the finishing touches on a fairly
successful season with a couple exclamation marks in
the final. The Moose Jaw Warriors 6-foot-4 prospect
put on a clinic in the final.
Clouston picked up his first of the evening when,
with one hand, he redirected a Travis point shot.
“He’s exceptionally fast and he used his legs tonight.
When he gets going he’s practically unstoppable,”
Barlow said about his star forward, Clouston.
At that point, the Chiefs had not allowed one shot
on net, despite being short handed twice.
Seconds before the midway mark of the first, Clous-
ton stole a puck in the neutral zone, dashed in on
Parker Waseylenko, beating him low-glove.
Waseylenko was a brick wall when these two teams
met in the round robin stage. He stopped 36 shots in
a scoreless tie March 31.
“We weren’t getting pucks deep, skating fast
enough, weren’t making checks,” said Clouston about
the round robin tilt. “Today, we came out and did all
those things and played our best game.”

shy of the net in a maze of skates and sticks. Chayse
Hnatowich fished out the loose biscuit, spun and slid
it home.
The Crusaders cut into the lead on a power play of
their own, when Zach Giacobbo walked in, faked a
clapper from just beyond the faceoff dot, then rushed
in a burnt Ty Tarvyd high-blocker.
A quick, simple pass from Isaac Benoit in the slot to
Clouston by the right faceoff dot completed the first-
period hat trick.
“That was definitely the best period of my lifetime,”
said Clouston, who went on to be named player of
the game. “I found the open spots on net and picked
them out.”
The first period ended with a skirmish in the Chiefs
end. Teams started the second with some four-on-four
play as, once again, Clouston found the back of the
net, blowing past a pair of Crusader defenders, scor-
ing on a breakaway from Benoit and Travis.
Clouston’s fourth chased Waseylenko, which seemed
to turn the fortunes of the Crusaders.
Under any other condition, five goals have been
more than enough of a cushion for the Chiefs with
Tarvyd between the pipes.
After being outshot 12-5 in the opening frame, the
Crusaders turned the tables, out-shooting the Chiefs
9-6, and the Chiefs needed a couple big stops by
Tarvyd on three-straight penalty kills to keep the Cru-
saders at a distance.
“We got exactly what we wanted,” said Clouston.
“This was our goal all year and we made it happen.
This was, hands down, the best team I’ve ever been a
part of. The chemistry and talent on this team is unlike
anything else.”
Tarvyd was simply spectacular all season. He fin-
ished the campaign without registering a loss and
only let four goals slip past him once, until the pro-
vincial final.
The Crusaders poured it on in the third period with
three goals, but the Chiefs kept them at bay with But-
terwick sniping through a crowd and Lucas Muench-
rath’s second of the tournament.
The Chiefs carved their way into the finals by clip-
ping the CBHA Rangers 5-3 in the opener March
30 and edged the host Okotoks Oilers Black 2-1 on
March 31.
With their spot in the final already reserved after the
Crusaders cemented the Oilers 5-3 April 1, the Chiefs
fell 6-4 to the Strathcona ACT Warriors in the final
game of the round robin.
“This was a really good weekend of hockey,” said
Barlow. “I am really proud of these boys. They earned

Kings collect yearly awards

took one last night to reflect and hon-

sons in franchise history.
The Kings held their annual windup
banquet March 31 at the Strathmore
Family Centre, where they handed out
their yearly awards and thanked spon-
sors, fans and people in the community
who made this year possible.
“It’s an unbelievable turn out to-
night,” said Kings head coach and new
dad Shadoe Stoodley. “The banquets
we had when I was coaching in double-
A were basically just parents. It’s great
to see the support this team has and
hopefully it grows moving forward into
next year.”
It was the first opportunity for the
entire Kings team and staff to be in the
same room following their earlier-than-
expected exit from the playoffs.
The night was a light-hearted affair.
Hosted by the voice of the Kings, Den-
nis Stewart, the community was treated
to dinner and music in a room decorat-
ed yellow and black with hockey skates
serving as vases.
Kings captain Keenan Ogle said grace
before the meal. Little did he know he
would bring home the biggest award of
the night.
Ogle finished up his third season
with the club. After only recording six
assists the season prior, Stoodley and
his staff elected him as captain at the
beginning of the year and named him
most valuable player at the banquet.
“I honestly didn’t think I was going
to get it. I thought they were going to
give it to (Brady) Hoover,” said a sur-
prised Ogle.
Ogle turned in his best season of his
Heritage Junior Hockey League career,
finishing with 10 goals and 17 assists,
leading the Kings to their best record
since the 2011-2012 campaign.
“It’s pretty humbling to know that
all the work and things you tried to do
were appreciated by your teammates
and coaches,” said Ogle.

The next big Kings event is set for
April 13 and 14, when they host their
spring training camp. This will be the
first opportunity for fans to get their
eyes on the makings of next year’s
group that looks to continue building
off a strong year.

part in the Chinook Open last weekend in Leth-
bridge and brought home a couple of medals.
Brynn Shaw and Kaitlyn Struiksma won gold in
the STAR 4 team event.
Meanwhile, Genevieve Hart, Trinity Haynes and
Tamzyn Musselman captured silver in the STAR 4
competition.
In the STAR 2 team event, Ava Doyle, Paige La-
bossiere, Sophia Bischoff and Olivia Beardsell won
silver, and Rylee Wilson won the bronze for her
interpretive skate.
Previously, at the Alberta STARSkate champion-
ships March 26 in Airdrie, the skating club racked
up some more hardware.
Jaicey Birch, in a field of 24 skaters, won silver
for an interpretive routine. Wilson placed third

ing around for the final axe to drop from Hockey
Alberta about their future location, speculation has
bubbled up along the streets of Strathmore about
the potential acquisition of an Alberta Junior Hock-
ey League franchise.
The process to filling the void left by the Bisons
might be more difficult than people think. There is
more to the math than subtracting one franchise
and adding another.
The Calgary Mustangs have been the team on the
tips of people’s tongues as a potential relocation
candidate.
“I have heard some rumblings about moving
the team. On our end, there has been no serious
talk about relocation,” said Calgary Mustangs head
coach and general manager Tyler Drader. “But we
have heard the Mustangs mentioned as a team peo-
ple are talking about for relocation.”
“As we stand right now, there have been no talks
by anyone about relocating any of our franchises,”
said AJHL commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk.
One of the reasons the Mustangs surfaced in the
rumour mill is their play the past few years.
In the Mustangs’ 26-year history, aside from win-
ning the AJHL championship during their inau-
gural season, they have only reached the second
round of the playoffs four times. The past two sea-
sons they finished dead last in the division with
a combined record of 20-94-6. It would be quite
the drop-off in performance from the Bisons to the
Mustangs.
Game 3 of the Alberta Midget Hockey League
finals saw an estimated crowd of more than 900
fans cram into the Strathmore Family Centre. At-
tendance numbers for the Bisons or the Strathmore
Wheatland Kings were never tallied for last season,
but the Game 3 crowd and Game 1 of the Kings
playoff series showed that fans would come out to
support exceptional hockey.
Last season, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons led
the AJHL in attendance, averaging 1,304 per game,
while the league average attendance was 711. The
Mustangs finished last with 205 fans per game.
Over the past five years, they have averaged 253
fans, with their highest showing during the 2012-
2013 season, when they averaged 330 per game.
The one-side seating of the Strathmore Family
Centre isn’t ideal, but they wouldn’t be the only
AJHL arena to feature the one-sided seating. The
Canmore, Olds and Whitecourt arenas all feature
seats on one half of the arena. There is definitely
enough room to pack the average attendance into
the Family Centre.
“When the Bisons were here, there was a sig-
nificant difference in the type of hockey that was
being played and the crowd support compared to
the Junior B game,” said Kings president Mike Lan-
gen. “There isn’t that much of a difference in game
play and the types of crowds you would get from
a Junior A and a Junior B fan base. The two teams
would be competing with one another for fans, ad-
vertisements and arena time.”

lected by Team South head coach Jamie
Steer and his staff.
“I didn’t watch much bantam triple-

camp, it’s clear to see why Anson won
the top defenseman award,” said Steer.
“He’s a big d-man that can really move.
I will have zero problem playing him in
any situation: power play, penalty kill
or in the final minutes of a game.”
McMaster is a 6-foot-3, 163-pounder
and played for the Rocky Mountain
Raiders of the Alberta Major Bantam
Hockey League this season.
In 36 games, he lit the lamp 15 times
and picked up 24 assists. He also
scored once in three playoff games. He
also took part in the AMBHL all-star
game, playing for Team South Jan. 14
in Okotoks.
“He was one of our strongest go-to
players this season. As a big, strong
kid, he played in every situation for us
as our captain. I’m not surprised that
he made this team,” said Raiders head
coach Mickey Kluner. “He has a big

look at players before the draft.”
More than 100 skaters signed up for
the Strathmore camp; the list was whit-
tled down to a 20-man roster.
“Overall, we were very impressed
with the skills and competition level
that we saw from the players in Strath-
more,” said Team Alberta coordinator
for Hockey Alberta, Dustin Moore. “The
players were divided into six teams,
and worked through positional skill
sessions, and then each team played
three games. The players are observed
on and off the ice to see how they re-
spond to different types of situations.”
McMaster’s teammate on the Raiders,
Ethan McKibbin, was also selected to
the South roster.
Eight teams will play at the Alberta
Cup. Players will also take part in an
education seminar hosted by the West-
ern Hockey League (WHL).

Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

a couple days prior to the one-game

tion games, to get acclimatized to the

Damien Henry
it is with heavy hearts that we an-
nounce the passing of our beloved
father, grandfather, and great-
grandfather, Damien Corbiell who on April 2, 2017
left this world to join his beloved wife, May. Damien
was born in Calgary, Alberta on February 28, 1922
to Jean Baptiste & Yvonne Corbiell, and grew up on
the family farm north of Cluny. On April 20, 1950,
Damien married his soulmate, May Jeanette Heather
and lived on the home place until their retirement
into Strathmore in 1987. It was on the family farm
they raised three children Barry, Heather & Alan.
There was never a part of the machinery that dad
couldn’t tackle to fix, or make a new part out of old
parts. Dad loved his RV’s and spent many summers
camping, and wintering in Arizona. Dad especially
loved his sports, and finally at the age of 91, retired
from golfing and curling three times a week. Dad’s
other passion was playing crib, especially when it
gave him great satisfaction to beat his son-in-law
Bruce. Damien leaves behind his son Barry (Lindsay)
Corbiell, and their families Melanie & Justin Hardy,
Michael Corbiell, Carmen Corbiell, & Justin Corbiell;
daughter Heather (Bruce) Johansen and their families
Michelle & Murray Gordon, Trevor Johansen, & Bryce
Johansen; and daughter-in-law Sharon Corbiell (Don
Peters), and their family Reilly Corbiell, & Lauren
Corbiell, & Stephanie Peters, Christa Peters & Jenny
Peters. With a special place in dad’s heart were his 7
precious great-grandchildren Grayson, Avery, & Den-
ver Hardy, Owen & Trey Corbiell, and Brynlee & Brody
Gordon. Dad was predeceased by his wife, May Cor-
biell, on January 19, 2016; and son, Alan Corbiell,
on December 5, 2005. The family would especially
like to thank Dr. Sader for the exceptional attention
and care he provided to dad over the last few years.
Thanks to the staff at Sagewood for their kindness
and support that dad received during his stay. A me-
morial service will be held on Monday, April 10, 2017
at Hope Community Covenant Church at 11:00 am.

Labourer must be physically fit; able to lift moderate weighing loads; and use

The ASB Equipment/Spray Truck Driver ensures that all tasks are completed in a
safe and timely manner. They are responsible for the day to day operations of
ASB equipment and its daily maintenance. Being self-motivated, capable of work-
ing independently, and interested in contributing to the improvement of pro-
grams and activities are important attributes to bring to this position.
ASB Equipment/Spray Truck Drivers are very important positions in the
department and the image they create and leave through the quality of their work
reflects on the entire ASB department and County.
