Answer any THREE questions from this section

6 (a) Derive the formulae for two capacitors connected in series.

(b) A parallel plate capacitor has plates of area 3m 2 consisting of 4


dielectric materials

of thickness d 1 = 0.5mm, d2 = 0.3mm , d3 = 0.6mm and d4 =


1.2 mm

If their relative permitivities are Er1 = 5 , Er2 = 3 , Er3 = 6


and Er4 = 12.

Determine the value of the combined capacitance.

(c ) A battery of 50 cells in series is charged through a resistor of


4 from a

230V supply . If the terminal voltage per cell is 2V and 2.7V


respectively at

the beginning and at the end of the charge. Calculate the


charging current :-

I. At the beginning
II. At the end of charging.

The figure above shows a mild steel magnetic circuit. The
magnetic flux

through the central limb is 360 micro webers. A coil of


150 turns is wound

on the central limb. Calculate the current required to


produce the magnet

flux given on the central limb . Ur for mild steel is 400.
