Professional Competencies and Cultural Responsiveness
1. When thinking of the different responsibilities that teachers must stick to, the quote
They are responsible for the education of society's youth. They are also responsible for
ensuring that the students within their care are found within the most positive, safe and
encouraging learning environment possible. If they cannot secure this, then teachers can
be sued for negligence. They have a duty of care towards their students, and if this is
betrayed, then teachers have a responsibility to face the consequences from
www.mun.ca outlines very well what I think those responsibilities reflect and what they
aim to accomplish. The legal responsibilities of the teacher include the responsibility to
report any signs of abuse of their students, obeying all the different applicable laws in the
classroom, and many others. To ensure that I fulfill my legal duties, I will keep a caring
and watchful eye on my students making sure that they are safe inside and outside of my
classroom. The ethical responsibilities include setting a good example for my students to
follow and making sure the students get what they need. To fulfil my ethical
responsibilities I will use my new knowledge in culturally responsive teaching to build a
respectful environment in my classroom. The professional responsibilities include
teaching the required standards and maintaining a professional relationship with students
and coworkers along with other things. To meet these professional responsibilities, I will
be sure to conduct myself in a professional manner in any encounter to ensure that my
work with others and the learning of the students can happen in the most effective way.

2. My legal responsibilities will mostly drive the relationship that /I have with
administrators and the public. A major concern of administrators and the district will be
that I am meeting all of my requirements throughout the year and staying true to all of the
laws in place. My ethical responsibilities will drive my relationship with my students and
their parents. This area focuses on what type of a person I can be for my students and in
being the best I can be will mean that I will be able to connect to my students as well as
have successful relationships with their parents. My professional responsibilities will
ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of all interactions making it a great driving force
in all of my relationships.
 3. Suspending judgement was the most intriguing disposition for me. When thinking about
this idea in my everyday life I realized that it requires a great deal of sociocultural
consciousness as you must recognize that this other person is experiencing life and any
given situation with a different view than myself. Once I am able to suspend my
judgement of others and their situations it gave me the opportunity to see the differences
between myself and them and celebrate the differences that we do have. Overall, just the
awareness of my own judgements and biases has led me to grow and become more
capable of being culturally responsive.

4. In my classroom culturally responsive teaching will take shape in my classroom as using

the CRT dispositions to be responsive to the culture of my students so that I can
effectively teach them in a way that they can find value in. The academic achievement of
students will raise if their teacher is able to present the lesson in a way that speaks to
them. Gaining the deeper understanding of my students will lead to a better grasp on how
they learn and what I can do to make my lesson work for all of my students.
