Un centro de referencia en UAVs
L
a diversificacin de productos en el sector aeroespacial
andaluz es uno de los aspectos fundamentales que des-
de hace aos viene impulsando el Cluster Hlice, con el
apoyo de la Administracin Regional, consciente de que, junto
a otros elementos como la internacionalizacin, son las bases
para mejorar la competitividad del tejido empresarial aeronu-
tico y consolidar su posicionamiento en el mercado mundial.
La orientacin hacia reas de mayor valor aadido, como la
ingeniera, la electrnica o los sistemas y aviones no tripulados
(UAVs) es, por tanto, especialmente importante para contribuir
a esta tarea, que se est plasmando a travs de proyectos e
iniciativas como el nuevo Centro de Vuelos Experimentales
ATLAS.
Este centro, cuyas obras se acaban de iniciar, y que entrar
en funcionamiento a finales de este mismo ao, se ha conver-
tido en un proyecto singular no slo para su entidad promoto-
ra FADA-CATEC, sino para toda la comunidad aeronutica
andaluza e incluso espaola, ya que constituirn las primeras
instalaciones cientfico-tecnolgicas de Espaa y Europa de-

or some years, product diversification within the Anda-
lusian aerospace sector has been one of the key issues
boosted by Hlice Cluster and by the Regional Administra-
tion, since they know that together with other substantial aspects
such as internationalization, it represents the basis to improve the
aerospace business networks competitiveness and consolidate
its position in global markets. Orientation towards more added
value areas such as engineering, electronic or unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAVs) is especially important to contribute to this work
being applied thanks to projects or initiatives such as the new
ATLAS Experimental Flight Center.
Works have just started in this centre which will entry into service
at the end of the year and that has become a singular project not
only for its promoting entity FADA CATEC-, but also for the whole
Andalusian and even Spanish aerospace community, since it will
involve the first scientific-technological facilities in Spain and Eu-
rope solely devoted to flight testing with medium and light size

dicadas en exclusiva a ensayos en vuelo con UAVs de tamao
medio y ligero y a la validacin de nuevos procesos de mo-
nitorizacin y control de trfico areo. De ah su importancia,
puesto que permitir situar a Andaluca en los prximos aos
como una regin referente en la experimentacin y desarrollo
de tecnologas y aplicaciones con sistemas no tripulados, una
de las reas que presenta mayor proyeccin de futuro en la
industria aeroespacial.
Y lo har en una doble vertiente: por un lado, convirtindose en
el escenario ideal para acoger las actividades de las principales
compaas y entidades internacionales vinculadas a este cam-
po; y por otro lado, potenciando la labor de I+D que se viene
ejecutando con sistemas no tripulados en la comunidad, con
proyectos innovadores, como el UAV solar, que impulsan cua-
tro centros tecnolgicos andaluces. Con todo ello, estamos
convencidos, no slo consolidamos esta apuesta estratgica
por los sistemas no tripulados, sino que seguimos impulsando
el desarrollo tecnolgico e industrial de nuestras empresas,
reforzando su participacin en el mercado aeronutico global.
UAVs and validation of air traffic new monitoring processes. And
this is why it is so important since it will enable to position An-
dalusia as a region of reference in the areas of experimentation
and technologies and applications development with unmanned
aerial vehicles, one of the most promising areas within the aero-
space industry.
And it will do so from a double consideration: From one hand,
becoming the ideal scenario to welcome the prime international
companies activities related to this field; and on the other hand,
boosting the R&D work which has been undertaking with un-
manned aerial systems in the region with innovative projects
such as the solar unmanned aerial vehicle fostered by four An-
dalusian tech centres. With all this, we are convinced, we dont
only consolidate this strategic commitment to unmanned aerial
systems, but we keep on boosting our companies technologi-
cal and industrial development, reinforcing its participation in the
global aerospace market

Notable xito del Cine Forum
Aeroespacial organizado por la
delegacin Sur de la AIAE
La Escuela Tcnica Superior de Ingeniera (ETSI) de Sevilla acogi
el pasado mes de marzo el Cine Forum Aeroespacial Aprendiendo
con el cine, una iniciativa organizada por Delegacin Sur de la Aso-
ciacin de Ingenieros Aeronuticos de Espaa (AIAE) con el fin de
dar conocer el mundo de la aeronutica y el espacio mostrando la
importancia de este sector y su repercusin en la historia a travs
de algunos de los ttulos ms afamados de la cinematografa hist- industry and highlight its importance and historical repercussions
rica o de ficcin. El ciclo, que cont con la colaboracin de la ETSI,
el Cluster Hlice y Euroavia Sevilla, y el patrocinio de las empresas
Grupo Sevilla Control, Airbus Military y Aertec Solutions; alcanz un
notable xito de asistencia en las diferentes sesiones celebradas,
en las que se proyectaron pelculas sobre diferentes temticas rela-
cionadas con la historia aeroespacial: Aquellos chalados en sus lo-
cos cacharros, La Batalla de Inglaterra, Apollo 13. Asimismo, se Men in their Flying Machines", "The Battle of Britain" and "Apollo
realizaron presentaciones y mesas de debate a cargo de expertos,
historiadores y profesionales del sector. El ciclo fue presentado por
Manuel Cruz, presidente de la Delegacin Sur de la AIAE y director
del Cluster Hlice, y entre los participan-
tes y divulgadores aeronuticos destaca-
ron Jos Clemente, piloto e historiador;
Juan Antonio Guerrero, escritor y divulga-
dor aeronutico; Antonio Gmez-Guilla-
mn, director general de Aertec; Gonzalo
Galipienso, director de Relaciones Insti-
tucionales de Astrium Espaa; Eduardo
Sanz, jefe de Ingeniera de Fabricacin de
General Dynamics; y diversos profesores
de la ETSI, como Francisco Gordillo, Ser-
gio Esteban, Francisco Gaviln, Antonio
Franco y Alfonso Valenzuela.
Airbus adjudica a cuatro
empresas andaluzas 500.000 de
horas de ingeniera de procesos
para 2013
Airbus ha adjudicado a cuatro empresas de ingeniera ae-
ronutica un paquete de trabajo de 500.000 horas de in-
geniera de procesos para este ao 2013. Las empresas
adjudicatarias han sido las firmas andaluzas MDU, Glenser
Aerospace y Ayesa Air Control, as como la madrilea CT In-
genieros, que tambin est implantada en Andaluca y cuen-
ta con su propia filial en el Parque Tecnolgico Aerpolis, en
Sevilla. Estas horas de ingeniera corresponden a trabajos de
apoyo para la fabricacin de los programas de Airbus Mili-
tary, como el A400M, el A330 MRTT o los aviones CN235,
C295 y C212. Asimismo, Airbus ha adjudicado otras 500.000
horas de ingeniera para su filial comercial en Espaa, Airbus
Operations, que ha recado en gran parte en CT Ingenieros,
aunque tambin supondr carga de trabajo para otras em-
presas andaluzas. Estas horas corresponden a trabajos para
los programas A350XWB, A380, A330 y A320.

The Aerospace Film Screenings
organized by the Southern
delegation of the AIAE prove
popular
Last March the Higher School of Engineering (ETSI) of Seville
hosted film screenings with an aerospace theme entitled Learn-
ing through Cinema. This initiative organized by the Southern
Delegation of the Spanish Association of Aeronautical Engineers
(AIAE) seeks to raise the profile of the aeronautical and aerospace
through some of the most acclaimed works in film history. This
event involved collaboration by the ETSI, the Hlice Cluster and
Euroavia Sevilla and was sponsored by the companies Grupo
Sevilla Control, Airbus Military and Aertec Solutions. The turnout
was impressive for the different screenings of these films which
dealt with key aspects of aerospace history: "Those Magnificent
13". There were also presentations and debates with participa-
tion by experts, historians and professionals from the sector.
The event was inaugurated by Manuel Cruz, Chairman of the
Southern Delegation of the AIAE and Di-
rector of the Hlice Cluster and included
participation by figures such as the pilot
and historian Jos Clemente; the writer
Juan Antonio Guerrero; Antonio Gmez-
Guillamn, CEO of Aertec; Gonzalo Gali-
pienso, Head of Institutional Relations
for Astrium Spain; Eduardo Sanz, Head
of Engineering and Manufacturing at
General Dynamics; and various lecturers
from the ETSI, including Francisco Gor-
dillo, Sergio Esteban, Francisco Gaviln,
Antonio Franco and Alfonso Valenzuela.
Airbus awards 500,000 hours
of process engineering to four
Andalusian companies for 2013
Airbus has awarded four aerospace engineering com-
panies a work package comprising 500,000 hours of
process engineering work for this year. The companies
in question are MDU, Glenser Aerospace and Ayesa
Air Control, together with the Madrid-based company
CT Ingenieros, which also has a presence in Andalusia
through its branch in the Andalusian Aerospace Tech-
nological Park, Aeropolis (Seville). These hours reflect
support work for the manufacture of various Airbus Mi-
litary models such as the A400M, the A330 MRTT, the
CN235, the C295 and the C212. Airbus has also awar-
ded another 500,000 engineering hours for its Spanish
commercial branch, Airbus Operations, much of which
has been assigned to CT Ingenieros, although other An-
dalusian companies will also benefit from this workload.
These hours are for work on the A350XWB, A380, A330
and A320 programs.

Elimco duplica las capacidades
de vuelo de sus UAS para
el desarrollo de trabajos de
topografa
La compaa andaluza Elimco, a travs de su filial Elimco
UAS, contina desarrollando y mejorando las capacidades
de su plataforma de aviones no tripulados, rea en la que
se est situarse como un referente en la gama micro, mini
y tctica. Su ltimo hito ha sido conseguir duplicar la auto-
noma de vuelo de su modelo E-300 Viewer en una confi-
guracin especficamente empleada para la recogida de
imgenes destinadas a aplicaciones de topografa. Elimco
ha aplicado para ello la tecnologa BXL de expansin de
batera, que ha permitido multiplicar por dos la capacidad
de energa para su propulsin de manera que el tiempo
de vuelo llegue a casi 3 horas,
un rcord para una aeronave de
esta clase, abarcando adems
trabajos de 3.000 hectreas
de extensin en un slo da. El
E-300 Viewer es un UAV de mo-
torizacin elctrica con una en-
vergadura de 4,8 m y capaz de
portar hasta 4Kg de sensores
pticos y carga til. Adems,
es muy estable y preciso, as
que produce datos de muy alta
calidad.
El Cluster Hlice participa en el
proyecto europeo Beware
El Cluster Hlice es uno de los 12 clsteres aeroespaciales euro-
peos que ha contribuido en la propuesta realizada por el cluster
Invent Baltics (Estonia) para participar en la convocatoria sobre
Cooperacin del VII Programa marco de la UE de finales de 2012,
cuyo tema se centraba en crear lazos de cohesin y de cono-
cimiento mutuo entre los socios potenciales de los proyectos
colaborativos de futuros programas marco europeos. De este
modo, Hlice participa en el proyecto Beware, que tiene como
fin incrementar la participacin en los programas europeos de
las entidades del Este de Europa y otras regiones perifricas
con baja participacin a travs de sesiones de trabajo y visitas
a empresas e instituciones de I+D en las que los coordinadores
potenciales de proyectos europeos conozcan las capacidades
de dichas regiones, creando los lazos necesarios para aumentar
su presencia en futuras iniciativas. Hlice es el nico cluster es-
paol que participa en el proyecto, junto a otros de Reino Unido,
Francia, Alemania, Italia, Repblica Checa, Lituania, Polonia, Es-
lovaquia y Rumana. El cluster andaluz sita esta actuacin como
uno de los frutos de su Plan de Internacionalizacin 2012-2013,
cuya puesta en marcha ha sido cofinanciada por la Direccin Ge-
neral de la Pyme del Ministerio de Industria en su lnea de apoyo a
los proyectos de los clsteres ms innovadores de Espaa (AEI).

Elimco doubles the capabilities
of its UAS for topographic work
The Andalusian company Elimco, through its subsidiary Elimco
UAS, is continuing to develop and improve the capabilities of its
UAS platform, a field in which it stands out in the micro, mini and
tactical categories. Its latest achievement is the doubling of the
endurance of its E-300 Viewer model, which has a configuration
specifically designed to capture images for topographic applica-
tions. Elimco has applied its own BXL (battery expansion) tech-
nology, which has enabled it to double the total energy capacity
for its propulsion, allowing a flight time of nearly three hours. This
is a record endurance for aircraft in this category, allowing jobs
covering 3,000 hectares in a single day. The E-300 Viewer is an
electric-powered UAV with a 4.8m wingspan capable of carrying
up to 4 kg of optical sensors. It is also highly stable and accurate,
allowing it to gather very high quality data.
The Hlice Cluster participates
in the Beware European project
The Hlice Cluster is one of the 12 European aerospace
clusters that have contributed to the proposal by the Invent
Baltics (Estonia) cluster to participate in the summons about
Cooperation of the UE VII framework Program of late 2012,
which main topic was the creation of cohesion links and mu-
tual knowledge among potential partners of collaborative
projects for future European framework programs. Therefore,
Hlice participates in the Beware project, aiming the increase
of participation of entities in the East of Europe -and other
peripheral regions with a low participation rate- in European
programs through working sessions and visits to companies
and R&D institutions in which potential coordinators of Eu-
ropean projects will be able to know the capacities of those
regions, creating the necessary links as to increase their pres-
ence in future initiatives. Hlice is the only Spanish cluster that
participates in the project together with other from the United
Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Lithuania,
Poland, Slovakia and Romania. The Andalusian Cluster con-
siders this point as one of the results of its Internationalization
Plan 2012-2013, which development has been co-financed by
the General SME Direction of the Industry Ministry on its line of
support to projects of most innovative clusters in Spain.

Airbus Military logra un importante
contrato para fabricar los fan cowl
del 737 Max de Boeing
Airbus Military ha cerrado un contrato histrico que supon-
dr carga de trabajo para los prximos 20 aos en sus fac-
toras ubicadas en Andaluca. La compaa ha ganado un
concurso internacional para la fabricacin de los recubri-
mientos metlicos de los motores (fan cowl) del 737 Max
de Boeing, valorado en unos 500 millones de dlares (300
millones de euros), aunque la cifra final depender de las
unidades que Boeing fabrique de este avin, que volar
en el plazo de dos aos. Las piezas sern construidas en
el Centro Baha de Cdiz (CBC) de Airbus Military en El
Puerto de Santa Mara (Cdiz) y la planta de Tablada de
Sevilla, aunque ser la primera la que se llevar la mayor
carga de trabajo y la responsable del proyecto. Esta facto-
ra ya fabrica las fan cowl del modelo A320Neo que fabrica
Airbus aunque en piezas de fibra de carbono. El contrato
alcanzado con Boeing se extender hasta 2025, prorroga-
ble hasta 2029, y en l trabajarn directamente unas 80
personas, aunque el programa
generar una importante carga
de empleo en la industria auxiliar
andaluza. Segn las previsiones,
el primer 737 Max se lanzar y
entregar en 2014, de forma que
la produccin en serie de las pie-
zas se iniciar entre 2016 y 2017.

producir para 42 aviones al mes
cuando alcance la mxima ca-
dencia de produccin.
Aertec se hace con el 100% de
Glenser y consolida su presencia
internacional con nuevos proyectos
Aertec Solutions afianza su posicionamiento en el mercado ae-
ronutico. La ingeniera andaluza ha anunciado la adquisicin
del 100% de la firma Glenser Aerospace, sociedad que compar-
ta al 50% con la tambin empresa andaluza Elimco, a la que
ha comprado finalmente su participacin. Glenser fue fundada
a finales de 2011 y est especializada en servicios de ingeniera
de fabricacin para aviones. Con esta adquisicin, Aertec incor-
pora a los 90 empleados de Glenser y una cartera de proyectos
valorados en 5 millones de euros, lo que eleva su plantilla a ms
de 300 profesionales y una facturacin global prevista de 16 mi-
llones de euros. Este movimiento convierte a Aertec en una de
las principales ingenieras del sector a nivel nacional y le aporta
ms masa crtica para seguir desarrollando nuevos proyectos
en el mercado europeo e internacional. La firma, adems, ha
abierto nuevas oficinas en Bristol (Gran Bretaa), uno de los po-
los aeronuticos ms destacados de Europa, y ha logrado nue-
vos contratos en Colombia, Blgica y Marruecos para el rea de
consultora y diseo de infraestructuras aeroportuarias.

Airbus Military wins an important
contract to manufacture the fan
cowls of the Boeing 737 Max
Airbus Military has been awarded a historic contract which will
provide work for the next 20 years in its Andalusian plants. The
company has won an international tender to manufacture the
metallic fan cowls for the Boeing 737 Max valued at around
$US500 million (300 million euros), although the final figure
will depend on the number of aircraft Boeing manufactures
of this model, which will be ready to fly within two years. The
parts are being made mainly at Airbus Military's Centro Baha
de Cdiz site (CBC) in El Puerto de Santa Mara (Cdiz), with
a more limited role for the Tablada site in Seville. This plant
already manufactures the fan cowls for the Airbus A320Neo,
although in carbon fiber. This latest contract with Boeing will
continue until 2025, with the possibility of extension through
to 2029. It will provide direct employment for 80 workers, as
well as generating an important workload for the Andalusian
auxiliary industry. According to forecasts, the first 737 Max
will be launched and delivered in 2014, with series production
beginning in
2 016 - 2 017.

Aertec acquires 100% of Glenser
and consolidates its international
presence with new projects
Aertec Solutions strengthens its positioning in the aeronautic
market. The Andalusian engineering company has informed
about the acquisition of 100% of the firm Glenser Aerospace, a
society 50% shared with the Andalusian firm Elimco, to which
the first has finally purchased the shares. Glenser was estab-
lished in late 2011 and it is focused in engineering services of
aircrafts manufacturing. With this acquisition, Aertec adds 90
employees of Glenser and a portfolio of projects with a value
of 5 million euros. This means an increase of the staff to more
than 300 professionals and an expected global invoicing of 16
million euros. This movement makes Aertec one of the main
engineering companies in the sector from a national point of
view and gains a wider critical mass to continue developing
new projects in the European and International market. Also,
the firm has opened new offices in Bristol (Great Britain), one
of the most important aeronautic hubs in Europe, and also,
it has reached new agreements in Colombia, Belgium and
Morocco for the consulting and airport infrastructures design.

Airbus renueva las direcciones de sus plantas en Espaa y nombra a Jos

Jess Lpez nuevo responsable en Puerto Real
Airbus ha renovado su estructura organizativa en Espaa, para lo que ha nombrado nuevos directores en sus tres plantas. As ha nombrado
director de la planta de Puerto Real (Cdiz), a Jos Jess Lpez Medina, quien diriga las secciones de fuselaje trasero 19 y 19.1 del programa
A350 XWB; mientras que en la planta de Getafe (Madrid) ha nombrado director a Luis Pizarro Teno, hasta ahora responsable de la planta
de Illescas (Toledo). Por su parte, Teresa Busto del Castillo, estar al frente de la factora de Illescas, convirtindose en la primera mujer que
dirige una planta de Airbus en Espaa. Estos nombramientos son efectivos desde el 1 de enero y forman parte de la nueva organizacin de la
compaa, que pretende impulsar el rendimiento mediante una cadena de mando menos amplia que haga ms gil y rpida la toma de deci-
siones. Por otra parte, Airbus ha nombrado director de Operaciones en China al espaol Rafael Gonzlez-Ripoll, hasta hace poco director del
Centro de Excelencia del Empenaje y Fuselaje Posterior en Espaa. Asimismo, la compaa ha anunciado que tiene previsto contratar ms
de 400 personas en las plantas espaolas para 2013, dentro de su plan de contratacin de 3.000 empleados en todo el mundo.

The appointments are effective as from January 1 and form part of the company's new business organization, which aims to improve
performance through a more limited chain of command to streamline decision-making processes. The company has also appointed
the Spaniard Rafael Gonzlez-Ripoll as Airbus China Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Gonzlez-Ripoll previously worked as head of the
Center of Excellence Empennage and Aft-Fuselage in Spain. The company has also announced that it plans to contract over 400 staff
in Spanish sites over 2013 as part of its employment plan encompassing 3,000 employees worldwide.

C295 y CN-235 de Airbus Military
Airbus Military ha recibido nuevos pedidos para sus programas
de aviones de transporte militar de ligero y mediano tamao que
se montan en sus instalaciones de San Pablo (Sevilla). En concre-
to, la empresa ha recibido una ampliacin del encargo de Colom-
bia para el modelo C295, que pasa del contrato inicial de cinco
unidades a seis; as como otro pedido de seis aviones por parte
de la Fuerza Area Egipcia. En el caso del CN-235, Airbus Military
ha recibido un encargo de un nuevo avin de vigilancia martima
para la Guardia Costera de EE.UU. La compaa tambin ha he-
cho entrega a Kazajstn de los dos primeros C295 encargados,
y a los que podran unirse otros seis aviones ms en los prximos
aos. Por ltimo, la empresa hizo entrega el pasado 24 de enero
del ltimo avin C212-400 producido en Espaa, lo que puso fin
a ms de 40 aos de fabricacin continuada de este modelo en
la lnea de montaje final de Airbus Military en Sevilla. Este ltimo
C212 fue entregado a la Polica Martima de Vietnam. A partir de
ahora se desarrollar una nueva versin mejorada del C212, que
ser producida por PT Dirgantara y Airbus Military en Indonesia.
New orders for the Airbus Military
C295 and CN-235
Airbus Military has received new orders for its light and me-
dium airlifter programs, which are assembled at its facili-
ties in San Pablo (Seville). The C295 order from Colombia
has been increased from the initial order of five aircraft to
six aircraft. In addition, six C295s have been ordered by
the Egyptian Air Force. A new CN-235 maritime surveil-
lance aircraft has been ordered for the U.S. Coast Guard
and Airbus Military has also delivered the first two C295s
for Kazakhstan, with another six aircraft to be delivered in
the coming years. Finally, the company also delivered the
last C212-400 to be manufactured in Spain on January 24,
bringing an end to more than 40 years of continuous pro-
duction of this model at the Airbus Military Final Assembly
Line in Seville. This last C212 was delivered to the Vietnam
Marine Police. From now on a new improved version of the
C212 will be manufactured by PT Dirgantara and Airbus
Military in Indonesia.

El grupo tecnolgico espaol Tecnatom particip del 12 al 14 de marzo en Pars (Francia) en una nueva edicin de JEC Composites,
el mayor encuentro europeo dedicado al sector de los materiales compuestos y en el que se dieron cita las principales empresas de
esta rea. Durante el certamen, Tecnatom present en su stand propio las capacidades tecnolgicas que viene prestando a la industria
aeroespacial desde hace ms de una dcada (de manera especial en sistemas de inspeccin, Ensayos No Destructivos e ingeniera de
control), y que en la edicin anterior le hicieron merecedor de un premio a la innovacin en la aplicacin de las tcnicas END al control de

Tecnatom showcases its aerospace

technology capabilities at JEC
Composites 2013
From March 12 to 14 the Spanish technological group Tecnatom
attended the latest edition of JEC Composites in Paris (France), the
largest European exhibition for composite materials which draws
all the leading companies in this field. During the event, Tecnatom
had its own stand to showcase the technological services it has
been providing to the aerospace industry for more than a decade
now, particularly in the field of inspection systems, non-destructive
testing (NDT) and control engineering. At the previous edition it de-
servedly won an innovation prize in the field of application of NDT
techniques for quality control of composite materials. The company
formed part of the Spanish pavilion participating at the exhibition,
which was attended by a total of 1,300 companies and had an eco-
nomic repercussion of around 700 million euros. Spain was the se-
venth most represented country behind other important countries
such as France, Germany, the UK and the United States.

La empresa gaditana Carbures, que fabrica piezas de fibra de
carbono para el sector aeronutico, ha adquirido la compaa nor-
teamericana Fiberdyne, tambin especializada en composites, y
con la que se instala en Seattle, centro neurlgico de la industria
aeroespacial de EE.UU. Con esta operacin, la firma refuerza su
posicionamiento en el continente americano, donde ya contaba
con una planta en Greenville (Carolina del Sur), y le permite es-
tar presente en la red de proveedores de Boeing, con sede en
Seattle. Carbures ha obtenido la certificacin de calidad AS9100
para la fabricacin de estructuras en composites y un centro de
4.000 metros cuadrados. Asimismo ha incorporado clientes ae-
ronuticos como Raisbeck Engineer y Xcor o Tesla y Hexcel, para
otros mbitos. La operacin se enmarca dentro de la estrategia
que inici en 2012 con su salida a la bolsa y que se centra en la
internacionalizacin y la diversificacin de su actividad y clientes.
Carbures tiene previsto poner en marcha este ao sus nuevas
factoras en Jerez de la Frontera (Cdiz), El Burgo de Osma (Soria)
y Harbin (China) y estima un crecimiento en sus ingresos de entre
un 40%-50%. En el ltimo ejercicio, la firma ha ampliado tres ve-
ces con xito su capital y ha triplicado su valor en bolsa.
Fiberdyne to reinforce its position
in the U.S.
The Cdiz-based company Carbures, which specializes in carbon
fiber parts for the aerospace industry, has purchased the Ameri-
can composites company Fiberdyne to establish a base in Seattle,
the nerve center for the U.S. aerospace industry. This new com-
pany will join Carbures' other plant in Greenville (South Carolina),
reinforcing the company's position on the American continent and
establishing its presence in the network of suppliers for Boeing,
which is based in Seattle. Carbures has obtained AS9100 quality
certification for the manufacture of composite structures and has
facilities covering an area of 4,000 m. It has also increased its port-
folio with aerospace customers such as Raisbeck Engineer and
Xcor and companies in other spheres such as Tesla and Hexcel.
This latest operation forms part of a strategy initiated in 2012 fol-
lowing its listing on the stock exchange and it is now focusing on
internationalization and diversification of its activity and its custom-
er portfolio. Carbures intends to start up new factories this year in
Jerez de la Frontera (Cdiz), El Burgo de Osma (Soria) and Harbin
(China) and foresees a growth in turnover of around 40% to 50%.
Over the last year the company successfully increased its share
capital on three occasions and its shares have tripled in value.

Jos Enrique Romn, new Managing Director

Boeing has appointed Jos Enrique Romn as the new Managing Director of
Boeing Research & Technology Europe as from April 1. In his new role Romn
will head Boeing's efforts in collaboration with its European research partners to
foster technological excellence and competitiveness in the aerospace industry.
Jos Enrique Romn has 30 years of experience in the field of technological ma-
nagement and he previously worked since 2004 as the director of Engineering and
Programs for the center. He takes over from Francisco Escart, Managing Director
since 2004, who is stepping down due to retirement. Both the Hlice Cluster and
the Center for Advanced Aerospace Technologies (CATEC) have expressed their
appreciation of the support and cooperation offered by Francisco Escart during
his time at the helm of this center for the development of RDI activities in the Anda-
lusian aerospace sector.

Alestis Aeroespace ha finalizado las negociaciones con los re-
presentantes de los trabajadores y ha alcanzado un acuerdo
definitivo sobre el Expediente de Regulacin de Empleo plan-
teado en la empresa, que reducir un 25% las extinciones de
contratos propuestas. Segn inform Alestis, esta resolucin
permitir a la compaa continuar en la trayectoria que le debe
garantizar la superacin de sus actuales problemas financieros
y estructurales. De las 312 extinciones presentadas se limitarn
a 234, repartidas en 167 contratos directos y otros 67 indirec-
tos. Los despidos no sern inmediatos y se harn efectivos a
medida que la compaa vaya perdiendo la carga de trabajo
prevista a lo largo de 2103. Un total de 55 despidos se reali-
zarn a travs de prejubilaciones, y el resto contarn con una
serie de medidas incluidas en el plan social que facilitarn su
recolocacin en los prximos aos, entre las que destaca una
bolsa de empleo interna y externa a la empresa. Alestis desta-
c el esfuerzo realizado por la compaa, los representantes de
los trabajadores, y los propios empleados para alcanzar este
acuerdo, que sirve para seguir avanzado en su plan de viabi-
lidad, lograr financiacin y encarar con mayores posibilidades
de xito la resolucin del concurso de acreedores en el que

worker representatives to reach a definitive agreement
regarding the Redundancy Plan proposed for the com-
pany which reduces the number of redundancies by
25%. According to Alestis, this agreement will enable the
company to continue with its plans to resolve its current
financial and structural problems. The 312 redundancies
initially proposed will be limited to 234, consisting of 167
direct contracts and another 67 indirect contracts. The
layoffs will not be immediate and will be gradually imple-
mented as the company reduces its expected workload
over the course of 2013. A total of 55 positions will be
terminated by way of early retirements and the rest will in-
clude a series of measures under the labor plan which will
facilitate reassignment over the coming years, including
an internal and external jobs board for the company. Al-
estis highlighted the effort made by the company, worker
representatives and the employees themselves to reach
this agreement, which enables it to further advance with
its viability plan, secure financing and improve the chanc-
es of successfully finalizing the bankruptcy proceedings
initiated last year.

un reconocimiento de la Red de
Excelencia Pegasus
La Red de Excelencia Pegasus, organizacin que agrupa a las
mejores Escuelas de Ingeniera Aeroespacial europeas, ha otor-
gado el diploma de reconocimiento PERSEUS Label a los Estu-
dios Aeronuticos de la Escuela Tcnica Superior de Ingeniera
(ETSI) de la Universidad de Sevilla, que reconoce la excelencia
de los estudios a nivel de mster y la estrecha vinculacin del
centro con la industria. La Universidad de Sevilla ha sido el pri-
mer centro universitario europeo en recibir este reconocimiento
tras haber superado una auditora por miembros de la Red Pe-
gasus y la industria aeronutica europea. El acto de entrega tuvo
lugar el pasado 8 de marzo por parte del presidente de la Red
Pegasus, Franco Bernelli, al Rector de la Universidad de Sevilla,
Antonio Ramrez de Arellano, y a Jos Luis Martnez Ramos, di-
rector de la ETSI. En el evento tambin estuvieron presentes M

Recognition of the Aeronautical
Studies of Seville University
by the Pegasus Network of
Excellence
The Pegasus Network of Excellence, an organization which
brings together the leading European Aerospace Engineer-
ing Schools, has granted the PERSEUS diploma to the Aero-
space Studies of Seville's Higher School of Engineering in
recognition of the excellent standard of the Masters courses
and its close links with the sector. The University of Seville is
the first European University to receive this recognition after
passing an audit by members of the Pegasus Network and
the European aerospace industry. The diploma was present-
ed on March 8 by the Chairman of the Pegasus Network,
Franco Bernelli, to the Rector of the University of Seville, An-
tonio Ramrez de Arellano, and Jos Luis Martnez Ramos,
Director of the ETSI. Also present at the event was M nge-
les Martn, coordinator of the Pegasus Network for the Uni-
versity of Seville; Carlos Gmez Camacho, coordinator of the
Aerospace Engineering Degree of the ETSI; Federico Paris,
director of the EADS Chair of the ETSI; and the Aerospace

especfica para la investigacin y desarrollo de nuevas tecnologas relacionadas
con UAVs y Navegacin Aerea. ATLAS acoger ensayos y operaciones con UAVs

ndaluca ha dado el salto clave para convertirse en un re-
ferente internacional en el rea de los sistemas areos no
tripulados, con la puesta en marcha del Centro de Vuelos
Experimentales ATLAS, una iniciativa que acoge las primeras insta-
laciones de Espaa dedicadas ntegramente a la experimentacin
de tecnologas y sistemas de aviones no tripulados UAS (Unman-
ned Aircraft System) o UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles). El centro,
impulsado por el Centro Avanzado de Tecnologas Aeroespaciales
(CATEC), entidad gestionada por la Fundacin Andaluza por el De-
sarrollo Aeroespacial (FADA), ha iniciado las obras de construc-
cin y estar operativo a finales de este mismo ao.
Se trata de un proyecto estratgico para la Aeronutica Andalu-
za, que permitir situar al sector a la vanguardia en uno de los sub-
sectores con mayor proyeccin a nivel mundial y en el que ms se
est centrando la investigacin y desarrollo de nuevas tecnologas,
tanto militares como civiles a nivel internacional. Asimismo, poten-
ciar la actividad industrial sobre UAVs que, de una manera cada

ndalusia has made a leap to become an international bench-
mark in the area of unmanned aerial systems, with the com-
missioning of the ATLAS Experimental Flight Center, an initia-
tive that holds Spain's first facility devoted entirely to the testing of new
technologies and unmanned aircraft systems UAS or Unmanned Aerial
Vehicles UAVs. The center, promoted by the Center for Advanced Aer-
ospace Technologies (CATEC), an entity managed by the Andalusian
Foundation for Aerospace Development (FADA) has started construc-
tions and will be operational by the end of this year.
This is a strategic project for the Andalusian Aeronautical, allowing
positioning the industry to the forefront in a sub-sector with the greatest
worldwide expectative and in which research and development of new
technologies focuses more and more, both military and civilian from an
international point of view. It will also boost industrial activity of UAVs, in
an increasingly growing, which is being developed in the community
through different companies, as Elimco, which has already found a
niche in the national and international scene, and others like MDU or
Skylife Engineering, looking to expand in this market.
ATLAS (Air Traffic unmanned Laboratory for Advanced Systems)
aims to contribute to scientific and technological development, pro-
viding the aviation community's first permanent installation for safety
scientific-technological tests, simulations and validation of technologies
applicable to UAS. Its main goal is providing companies, manufactur-
ers and operators, regulators, government agencies, and universities,
technology and research centers with innovative infrastructures and air-
space suitable for R & D with this type of aircraft, considered as key for
the future of the aviation sector, both in the field of defense and security
and new civil and commercial applications that are booming.
In this sense, the center will play an important role in the validation of
new technologies especially applicable to civilian operations, such as
the management of natural disasters, fires, environmental accidents,
land or sea traffic surveillance, communications, meteorology, envi-
ronmental protection, supporting agriculture and forestry applications,
aerial photography, cinematography, mapping, and applications in de-
fense, security and civil protection.
A privileged location
One of its main advantages is the strategic location: ATLAS is being
built on the site of Herrera in the town of Villacarrillo (Jan), a privileged
location whose airspace, weather and topography are suitable for the
development of experimental flights with unmanned aircrafts. Specifi-
cally, its location in this environment is the result of an extensive study
that analyzed more than 150 possible locations in Andalusia consid-
ering different aspects of operational safety, air traffic and flights over
unpopulated areas, environmental impact, suitable terrain, radio cover-
age, weather, migratory movements of birds, and even social accept-
ance of the project by the locals.

hueco en el panorama nacional e internacional, y otras como MDU
o Skylife Engineering, que buscan expandirse en este mercado.
ATLAS (Air Traffic Laboratory for Advanced unmanned Systems)
pretende contribuir al desarrollo cientfico y tecnolgico, ofreciendo
a la comunidad aeronutica la primera instalacin cientfico-tecnol-
gica permanente para realizar de manera segura ensayos, simula-
ciones y validacin de tecnologas aplicables a los UAS. Su finalidad
es que las empresas desarrolladoras, fabricantes y operadoras con
aviones no tripulados, autoridades reguladoras, organismos oficia-
les, y Universidades, centros tecnolgicos y centros de investiga-
cin, dispongan de unas infraestructuras innovadoras y un espacio
areo idneo para la I+D con este tipo de aeronaves, consideradas
clave para el futuro del sector aeronutico, tanto en el campo de la
seguridad y defensa como en las nuevas aplicaciones de carcter
civil y/o comercial, que se encuentran en pleno auge.
En este sentido, el centro jugar un papel importante en la vali-
dacin de nuevas tecnologas especialmente aplicables a opera-
ciones civiles, como pueden ser la gestin de desastres naturales,
incendios y accidentes medioambientales, vigilancia de trfico
terrestre o martimo, comunicaciones, meteorologa, proteccin
del medio ambiente, apoyo a agricultura y aplicaciones forestales,
fotografa area, cinematografa, cartografa, y aplicaciones en de-
fensa, seguridad y proteccin civil.
Enclave privilegiado
Para todo ello cuenta como una de sus principales ventajas su
ubicacin estratgica. ATLAS est siendo construido en el paraje
de Herrera en el municipio de Villacarrillo (Jan), un enclave que
destaca por disponer de un espacio areo cuya situacin, clima-
tologa y orografa son idneas para el desarrollo de vuelos expe-
rimentales con aeronaves no tripuladas. En concreto, su localiza-
cin en este entorno ha sido fruto de un extenso estudio realizado
que se analizaron ms de 150 posibles ubicaciones en toda Anda-
luca teniendo en cuenta diferentes aspectos relativos a la seguri-
dad de operacin, trfico areo y vuelo sobre zonas no pobladas,
impacto ambiental, orografa adecuada, cobertura de radio, clima-
tologa, fenmenos migratorios de avifauna, e incluso aceptacin
social del proyecto por los habitantes de la zona.
Adems, su localizacin le permite disfrutar de unas excelentes
comunicaciones con el resto de Andaluca y Espaa a travs de la
Autova de Andaluca (A-4), a poco ms de una hora de la lnea de
alta velocidad (AVE) Crdoba-Madrid y del aeropuerto de Granada-
Jan, y a dos horas de los aeropuertos de Sevilla, Mlaga y Almera.
Las obras de ATLAS se han iniciado con las tareas de acondiciona-
miento del terreno, que se han visto afectadas por las intensas lluvias
cadas en las ltimas semanas, pero que se acelerarn una vez supe-
rada esta fase inicial de construccin durante la primavera y el vera-
no. Los trabajos tienen un plazo de ejecucin de unos 8 meses, por lo
que su puesta en funcionamiento est prevista para finales de 2013.
No obstante, la intencin del centro es poder realizar las prime-
ras campaas de vuelo con UAVS una vez estn disponibles las
pistas de aterrizaje y despegue. De este modo, la actuacin se
pretende desarrollar en dos etapas, de forma que en la primera se
construirn la pista principal de vuelo y sus plataformas asociadas
y en la segunda fase se construirn el resto de las infraestructuras.
El proyecto supone una inversin total de 4,6 millones de euros,
cofinanciada por el Programa Operativo FEDER de Andaluca
2007-2013.
Instalaciones de excelencia
Entre las principales caractersticas del Centro de Vuelos Ex-
perimentales ATLAS hay que destacar de manera especial sus
infraestructuras de excelencia, destinadas a facilitar la labor de
investigacin y desarrollo con UAVs. El centro se compone de un
pequeo aerdromo que cuenta con una pista principal de aterri-

zaje y despegue de 800 metros de longitud y una auxiliar de hierba
de 400 metros, una plataforma , y un edificio de tres plantas para la
planificacin y el seguimiento de las misiones (torre de control con
radar, sala de comunicaciones e instalaciones asociadas) y servi-
cios (oficinas, despachos, etc.).
Adems, dispondr de varios hangares independientes con es-
pacio para talleres de mantenimiento y reparacin de los UAVs, y
otras instalaciones para el soporte logstico-tcnico del centro, as
como de una reserva de espacio areo segregado con una exten-
sin a superior a los 1.000 Km2. ATLAS podr albergar aeronaves
o sistemas no tripulados de una envergadura mxima de 15 me-
tros, y un peso mximo al despegue inferior a 650Kg.
Las principales actividades consistirn en estudiar cmo mejorar
la capacidad de los aviones no tripulados y probar su eficacia en el
aire. En concreto, se realizarn operaciones de UAVs ligeros y tc-
ticos, la validacin de tecnologas de navegacin, guiado y control
de aeronaves, as como de nuevas tcnicas, ensayos y certificacin
de vehculos no tripulados y la cualificacin de pilotos, operadores y
mecnicos de mantenimiento de este tipo de sistemas areos.
Apuesta por los sistemas areos no tripulados
La puesta en marcha de ATLAS supone un importante respaldo
a la experiencia investigadora andaluza sobre los vuelos no tripu-
lados en el mbito civil y a la labor que se viene haciendo en los
ltimos aos en varias instituciones acadmicas y centros tecnol-
gicos ligados al sector aeronutico y al mundo acadmico en An-
daluca, como la Universidad de Sevilla, la Asociacin para la Inves-
tigacin y Cooperacin Industrial en Andaluca (AICIA), y CATEC.
Este ltimo, tiene entre sus lneas estratgicas el desarrollo de
proyectos relacionados con UAVs, y en apenas cuatro aos, se
ha convertido en un centro de referencia gracias a su liderazgo en
diferentes iniciativas nacionales e internacionales de I+D+i, entre
ellas varias pertenecientes al VII Programa Marco de la UE.
En este marco, CATEC est trabajando en proyectos de investi-
gacin dirigidos a desarrollar mltiples aplicaciones y sistemas con
UAVs, como tecnologas de cooperacin entre varios vehculos no
tripulados y robots para su aplicacin en misiones de proteccin
civil y apoyo en catstrofes; sistemas embarcados inteligentes en
aeronaves no tripuladas para la lucha contra incendios, o aplicacio-
nes que permitan que las aviones puedan, en el futuro, gestionar
y resolver conflictos en el trfico areo de forma autnoma, entre
otras cuestiones.

In addition, its location allows you to enjoy excellent communica-

tions with the rest of Andalusia and Spain through Andalusian mo-
torway (A-4), just over an hour away with high-speed line (AVE) Ma-
drid-Cordoba and to airports Granada-Jan, and two hours from the
airports of Seville, Malaga and Almeria.
ATLAS works have begun with tasks associated with land, which
have been affected by heavy rains in recent weeks, but that will accel-
erate once this initial phase of construction in the spring and summer
will pass. The works have a lead time of about eight months, so its
operation is scheduled for late 2013.

However, the intent of the center is to make the first flight cam-
paigns UAVS once runway and takeoff are available. Thus, the per-
formance is to be developed in two stages, so that the main runway
and associated platforms will be built in the first one and in the sec-
ond phase, the rest of the infrastructure will be built. The project in-
volves a total investment of 4.6 million euros, financed by the ERDF
Operational Programme for Andalusia 2007-2013.

The center consists of a small airfield that has a main 800 meters

The main activities will be to examine how to improve the ability of un-
manned aircrafts and test their effectiveness in the air. Specifically, there
will be operations with light and tactical UAVs, validating technologies
navigation, guidance and control of aircraft, as well as new techniques,
testing and certification of unmanned vehicles and qualifications of pilots,
operators and maintenance engineers for this type of aircraft systems.

Collaboration for an Andalusian solar UAV
An unmanned aircraft that could make use of the ATLAS center facilities
is the solar UAV that four Andalusian technology centers have decided to
promote in order to improve the experiences that already exist in the world
with this type of technology. This is a project where CATEC, the Andalusian
Centre of Innovation and Information Technology and Communications

Commitment with unmanned aerial systems

The starting of ATLAS is an important support to the Andalusian re-
search experience on unmanned flight in the civil sphere and the work
that has been done in recent years in various academic institutions and
research centers linked to the aviation industry and academia in An-
dalusia, such as the University of Seville, the Association for Research
and Industrial Cooperation in Andalusia (AICIA) and CATEC.
The latter, has among its strategic lines the development of
projects related to UAV's, and in just four years, it has become a ref-
erence center thanks to its leadership in various national and inter-
national R&D initiatives, including several belonging to the seventh
Framework Programme of the EU.

Colaboracin para un UAV solar andaluz

Una de las aeronaves no tripuladas que podran hacer uso de las
instalaciones del centro ATLAS es el UAV solar que cuatro centros
tecnolgicos andaluces han decidido impulsar con el fin de mejorar
las experiencias que ya existen en el mundo con este tipo de tecno-
logas. Se trata de un proyecto en el que van a trabajar CATEC, el
Centro Andaluz de Innovacin y Tecnologas de la Informacin y las
Comunicaciones (CITIC), el Centro Tecnolgico Avanzado de Ener-
gas Renovables (CTAER) y el Instituto Andaluz de Tecnologa (IAT).
Las entidades aunarn sus conocimientos y capacidades en el
desarrollo de un nuevo avin aplicando los avances alcanzados en
aspectos tan destacados como nuevos materiales, microelectrni-
ca, robtica, o analtica de procesos de gestin. Todo ello como
paso previo al desarrollo de posibles aplicaciones en aeronaves de
mayor tamao.
Esta iniciativa se enmarca dentro de un convenio de colaboracin
con el que los cuatro centros tecnolgicos pretenden aprovechar las
sinergias entre sus lneas de investigacin, y que contempla tambin
la realizacin de acciones de vigilancia y transferencia tecnolgica,
organizacin de jornadas de difusin y actividades de formacin, y la
informacin y asesoramiento mutuo en los campos de inters comn.
Para los firmantes del acuerdo, las posibilidades de actuacin conjunta
son especialmente importantes en sectores como el aeroespacial o el
de las energas renovables, en los que Europa tiene planteados exigen-
tes desafos tecnolgicos y medioambientales para los prximos aos.

and the Andalusian Institute of Technology (AIT) will work together .
The entities combine their knowledge and skills in the development of
a new aircraft using the progress made in areas such prominent as new
materials, microelectronics, robotics, or analytical processes. All this as a
prelude to the development of potential applications in larger aircrafts.
This initiative is part of a collaboration agreement with the four technol-
ogy centers that seek to exploit the synergies between their research lines,
which also include conducting surveillance and technology transfer, diffu-
sion conferences and training activities, the information and advice in the
fields of mutual interest.
For the signatories of the agreement, the possibilities of working jointly
are particularly important in sectors such as aerospace or renewable en-
ergy, in which Europe is facing important environmental and technological
challenges for the coming years.

Eva Mara Vzquez es desde mediados de 2012 la directora general de Investigacin,

Tecnologa y Empresa de la Consejera de Economa, Innovacin, Ciencia y Empleo de
la Junta de Andaluca, uno de los departamentos estratgicos del Ejecutivo andaluz en
la poltica de reactivacin econmica. Aunque la inversin pblica en I+D no pasa por
sus mejores momentos, Vzquez aboga por seguir apostando por el conocimiento como
factor de desarrollo econmico en la comunidad, en especial en sectores estratgicos
y tecnolgicos como el aeronutico. En este sentido, seala que la I+D es un mbito
prioritario para Andaluca y defiende el compromiso del Gobierno regional en esta

Eva Mara Vzquez is the general director for Research, Technology and Enterprises under
the Regional Government of Economy, Innovation Science and Employment of Junta de
Andaluca from the middle of 2012, one of the strategic departments to reactivate the
economy for the Andalusian government. Although this is not the best time for public
R&D investment, Vzquez stands for boosting knowledge as an economic development
factor within the region, notably in strategic and technological sectors as Aeronautics.
In that sense, she stated that R&D is considered to be of priority interest for Analusia
and defends the regional Government commitment to this concern with the more than
350 million euros of budget this year. At the same time, she recognises the investment
effort the Andalusian companies are undertaking in that field, despite the national and
international hard economic context

El sector aeronutico es uno de
los sectores estratgicos para
el Gobierno andaluz, y uno de
los principales motores de la
economa de la comunidad que,
a pesar de la crisis, sigue cre-
ciendo. Cules son las inicia-
tivas ms destacadas que est
llevando a cabo su departamen-
to para impulsar este sector?
Efectivamente el clster aero-
nutico andaluz supone ya el 1,21%
del PIB1 global de la comunidad.
Adems, el empleo generado por
este sector experiment en 2011
un crecimiento neto de 524 puestos
de trabajo, superando los 10.800
empleos directos -un 5,1% ms que
en 2010-. Estas cifras nos dan una
idea de la importancia del sector en
Andaluca y, sobre todo, del poten-
cial de crecimiento que presenta.
En cuanto a las iniciativas para im-
pulsarlo, la Consejera de Economa,
Innovacin, Ciencia y Empleo pone
al servicio de las empresas un sis-
tema de ayudas a las que pueden
optar y que han hecho posible que,
desde 2005, se hayan invertido ms
de 195 millones de euros para pro-
yectos de desarrollo tecnolgico en
este sector. Adems, el desarrollo de
estas iniciativas llev aparejada una
inversin privada de 805 millones y
la creacin y/o mantenimiento de
4.293 puestos de trabajo.
Tambin cabe mencionar el Pro-
grama de Accin del Sector Aeroes-
pacial 2010-2013, una gua de actua-
cin que recoge 22 acciones para el
impulso y consolidacin del sector
en Andaluca, que fue adems con-
sensuada por el Gobierno andaluz
con las asociaciones sindicales y
los empresarios. El grado de cumpli-
miento de este Programa, a un ao
vista de que concluya, est entre el
70 y el 75%. Adems, a travs de la
Agencia Andaluza de Promocin Ex-
terior (Extenda) tambin apoyamos
al sector mediante acciones de pro-
mocin internacional junto al clster
andaluz, fomentando la asistencia
de las empresas a ferias y encuen-
tros internacionales destacados.
La I+D es esencial para un sec-
tor altamente tecnolgico como
el aeronutico, que se est vien-
do afectado en este aspecto por
los recortes econmicos deriva-
dos de la crisis. Qu medidas
concretas est desarrollando el
Gobierno andaluz para evitar un
descenso en la I+D?
En Andaluca contamos con
programas de incentivos a la I+D
orientados a empresas, como los
que proporciona la Agencia IDEA, y
tambin otros dirigidos a investiga-
dores y agentes e instituciones que
generan conocimiento, como los
que gestiona la Direccin General de
Investigacin, Tecnologa y Empre-
sa. Tambin existen convocatorias
especficas como el Programa Inn-
terconecta, que ha permitido poner
en marcha 32 proyectos de inves-
tigacin dotados con cerca de 100
millones de euros y que se desarro-
llan en todo el territorio andaluz.
La I+D es un mbito prioritario
para Andaluca. Seguimos conser-
vando el tercer puesto en el ranking

Aeronautics is one of the stra-
tegic sectors for the Andalu-
sian Government and one of
the prime driving forces of the
economy within the region that
despite the credit crunch is on
the rise. What are the most out-
standing initiatives your depart-
ment is undertaking to boost
this sector?
Indeed, the Andalusian aerospace
cluster is already contributing 1.21%
to the global Andalusian GDP1. In ad-
dition, employment creation in this
sector grew up to 524 net jobs rising
above 10,800 direct jobs- 5.1 % more
than in 2012-. These figures give us
an idea about the importance of this
sector in Andalusia and especially
about its potential of growth. As per
the initiatives to boost it, the Regional
Government of Economy, Innova-
tion, Science and Employment pro-
vides the companies a help system
and which made possible that more
than 195 million euros were invested
in very high tech projects within this
sector. The development of this initia-
tives entailed as well a private invest-
ment of 805 million euros so 4,293
jobs could be kept.
The Aerospace Sector Action
Plan 2010-2013 should be also
mentioned, a performance guide
involving 22 actions to boost and
consolidate the sector in Andaluia,
which was also agreed with trade
unions, entrepreneurs and the Anda-
lusian Government. One year before
its end, the Programme has been
accomplished by 70 and 75%. In
addition, through the Trade Promo-
tion Agency of Andalusia (Extenda)
the sector is being supported too
by international promotion actions
together to the Andalusian cluster,
encouraging enterprises to attend
outstanding international meetings
and conferences.
R&D is essential for such a high-
tech sector as Aeronautics but
considering that is being affect-
ed by budget cuts due to the
crisis. What specific measures
is the Andalusian Government
developing to avoid the reduc-
tion of R&D?
In Andalusia we have R&D incen-
tive programmes for companies, as
those provided by IDEA Agency as
well as other programmes devoted
to researchers and agents and insti-
tution which create knowledge as
those managed by the General Di-
rection of Research, Technology and
Enterprise. There are other calls too
like the Innterconecta Programme
thanks to which 32 research projects
were started with an investment of
near 100 million euros to be devel-
oped up and down the region.
R&D is a priority issue for Anda-
lusia. We still have the third position
within the region ranking with more
R&D expenses (1,648 million euros,
just behind Madrid and Catalua)
and in addition we have kept this
position since 2002. The effort that
companies had to do to invest in re-
search and development is very re-
markable. Andalusian R&D expense
for companies currently represents
36.2% compared to 27.7% in 2001.

y adems mantenemos esta posi-
cin desde 2002. Cabe destacar
el esfuerzo que las empresas han
hecho en los ltimos aos para in-
vertir en investigacin y desarrollo.
Actualmente, el gasto empresarial
andaluz en I+D representa el 36,2%
frente al 27,7% que representaba en
2001. Pese a este esfuerzo, buena
parte del gasto en investigacin y
desarrollo (63%) sigue proviniendo
mayoritariamente del sector pblico
(Universidad y Administracin Pbli-
ca) en trminos superiores a la me-
dia nacional.
Qu previsiones manejan de
cara a los presupuestos de este
ao? Habr recortes?
En los presupuestos andaluces
para este ao hemos contemplado
mantener la inversin en investiga-
cin cientfica e innovacin, un rea
que contar con 355,4 millones de
euros. Creo que esta decisin refleja
como ninguna otra la apuesta de la
Administracin andaluza por el co-
nocimiento como factor de desarro-
llo econmico.
El ltimo informe anual del sec-
tor en Andaluca ha dejado claro
el esfuerzo inversor que las em-
presas auxiliares siguen reali-
zando en I+D, con un crecimien-
to del 8% y ms de 30 millones
de euros destinados en 2011.
Qu opinin le merece?
Las empresas en general, y es-
pecialmente las que se enmarcan
en sectores altamente tecnolgicos
como es el aeronutico, estn rea-
lizando un esfuerzo inversor en I+D
ms que notable. Creo que los em-
presarios han entendido que para
ganar en competitividad y sobrevivir

Marco Europeo de Investigacin.
Quiero remarcar que 'lidera' los pro-
yectos, no solo participa en ellos, lo
que le otorga un valor aadido por-
que significa que es considerada
una entidad investigadora de peso
dentro del sector a nivel internacio-
nal. Uno de ellos es ARCAS, un pro-
yecto de robtica area que se cen-
tra en el ensamblaje de estructuras
mediante la utilizacin de robots a

thanks to the IDEA Agency grants
upwards of 195 million euros have
been invested in tech projects spe-
cifically related to Aeronautics since
2005. Initiatives such as the Jeremie

well to give financial backing to
companies, promoting competitive-
ness among them (venture capital,
guarantees, co-guarantees, loans or
export-credit insurance).

Andalusia is increasingly partici-
pating and leading R&D projects
under the 7th Framework Pro-
gramme for aerospace pro-
grammes. Do you think Andalu-
sian tech centres have a good
level compared to Europe?
Undoubtedly, and results speak
by themselves. In this moment the
Centre for Advanced Aerospace
Technologies (CATEC) is leading
two R&D European projects under
the EC 7th Framework Programme.
I want to highlight that it is leading
the two projects; this is not just a
collaboration, which gives an added
value since it is considered to be an
influential research entity within the
international aerospace sector. One
of them is ARCAS, an aerial robotic
project focused on assembling struc-
tures through the use of unmanned
aerial vehicles with onboard robots.
The other project is EC-SAFEMOBIL,
focused on the coordination of mul-
tiple unmanned aerial and ground
systems. The University of Seville is
also participating in both investiga-
tions that have a budget of 15 million
euros, which give you an idea about
the magnitude of both initiatives.
What do we need to make the
definitive leap forward and be-
come a worlds tech reference?
We need this punctual example
to get generalized and encourage
the participation of the entities at the

ment (FP7) and the future Horizon

En Andaluca, gracias al Pro-
grama Campus que fomenta la
creacin de empresas de base
tecnolgica, se han puesto en mar-
cha ms de 160 proyectos empre-
sariales en los ltimos 7 aos, y de
ellos el 95% han surgido en las uni-
versidades andaluzas. Las spin-off
aeronuticas, aunque son pocas,
son empresas que se han consoli-
dado y que, en su mayora, tienen
sus orgenes en colaboraciones
entre la industria y la universidad,
constituyendo claros ejemplos de
transferencia tecnolgica. Hay que
tener en cuenta que, a diferencia
de otros sectores, antes de poner
un producto en este mercado es
necesario obtener muchas certifi-
caciones, bastantes ms que en
otros mbitos, y por ello la inversin
que ha de hacerse es mayor.

El trabajo se organiza en base a la necesidad de sus clientes, que
realizan un pedido de material (planificado o no) y reciben, de mane-
ra rpida, una propuesta de la empresa para el suministro solicita-
do. Si se acepta, se organiza el pedido y se realiza la entrega en el
periodo establecido. En este sentido, la compaa ha realizado un
importante esfuerzo por la innovacin y mejora de los procesos de
gestin internos, como paso fundamental para aumentar su capa-

La iniciativa IN LIGHT pretende desarrollar ventanas capaces de modificar su grado

de transparencia a demanda de los pasajeros de una aeronave, lo que contribuir a
evitar un incremento de la temperatura en la cabina disminuyendo el consumo de aire
acondicionado, adems de mejorar el confort de los viajeros. El proyecto, perteneciente
al VII Programa Marco de la UE, cuenta con la participacin de importantes empresas
del sector y entidades de investigacin europeas, entre ellas el Centro Avanzado de
Tecnologas Aeroespaciales (CATEC). El centro andaluz se encargar de los procesos de
validacin y deteccin de los lmites de operacin y fallo del nuevo sistema, mediante
diferentes pruebas y ensayos tcnicos en sus instalaciones

l sector aeronutico afronta como uno de sus principales retos
la bsqueda de una mayor eficiencia y sostenibilidad con el fin
de adaptarse a las nuevas normativas medioambientales, y so-
bre todo, a reducir los costes en la fabricacin y mantenimiento de
los aviones mediante la aplicacin de nuevos sistemas y aplicaciones
tecnolgicas que supongan un ahorro en aspectos tan importantes
como el consumo de combustible o el gasto energtico. El Centro
Avanzado de Tecnologas Aeroespaciales (CATEC), ubicado en el
Parque Tecnolgico Aeroespacial Aerpolis (Sevilla), est participan-
do en una iniciativa pionera para la industria aeronutica que preten-
de ahondar en esta materia: el proyecto IN LIGHT.
Esta iniciativa, perteneciente al VII Programa Marco de la Comi-
sin Europea dentro de la convocatoria de sistemas y equipamiento
de transporte areo, tiene como objetivo fundamental el desarrollo
de una nueva generacin de ventanas inteligentes para los aviones
que pueda ser fabricada posteriormente por las empresas aeronu-
ticas europeas. En concreto, el proyecto consiste en el desarrollo de
ventanas capaces de modificar su grado de transparencia puedan
oscurecerse o aclararse a demanda del propio pasajero mediante
un interruptor, con el fin de evitar situaciones de excesiva luminosi-
dad o deslumbramiento sin que impida la visin del paisaje exterior.
Adems, el sistema mejorar el confort en el interior del avin, ha-
ciendo el vuelo ms agradable para los pasajeros.
Se trata de una nueva tecnologa que, por tanto, permitir reducir
el consumo energtico de la aeronave, ya que contribuye a evitar un
incremento de la temperatura en la cabina disminuyendo el consumo
de aire acondicionado. El sistema no slo filtra parte de la radiacin vi-
sible, sino que tambin filtra la regin del infrarrojo cercano, de modo
que contribuye a evitar un incremento de la temperatura en la cabina.

ne of the key challenges facing the aerospace industry
is the search for greater efficiency and sustainability in
order to adapt to new environmental regulations, and
above all to reduce aircraft manufacturing and maintenance
costs through the application of new systems and technologi-
cal applications which enable savings in terms of fuel and energy
consumption. The Center for Advanced Aerospace Technologies
(CATEC), based in the Aerospace Technological Park of Anda-
lusia, Aeropolis (Seville) is participating in a pioneering initiative
for the aerospace industry which seeks to make advances in this
area: the IN LIGHT project.
This initiative under the 7th Framework Program of the Euro-
pean Commission in the area of air transport systems and equip-
ment aims to develop a new generation of smart aircraft windows
for manufacture by European aerospace companies. The project
involves the development of windows capable of modifying their
degree of transparency to become darker or lighter on demand at
the flick of a switch, thereby avoiding situations of excessive glare
that prevent views of the exterior. The system will also improve
comfort in the aircraft cabin, making the flight more enjoyable for
passengers.
This new technology will also enable a reduction in the aircraft's
energy consumption as it contributes to avoid temperature increas-
es in the cabin by filtering both visible and near infrared radiation,
thereby reducing air conditioning use.
IN LIGHT consists of a consortium headed by the Basque IK4
Cidetec technological center and includes Spanish participation by
CATEC and the IK4 Tekniker technological center and other leading
companies such as the manufacturer EADS, the British Tier One
supplier GKN Aerospace and highly prestigious European research
centers - the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), the VTT Technical Re-
search Center (Finland) and the Venetian Research Consortium

Ensayos no destructivos en CATEC
CATEC participar en diferentes paquetes de trabajo del proyecto
a travs del rea de Materiales y Procesos para la validacin de los
conceptos desarrollados y la deteccin de sus lmites de operacin
y de fallo, para lo que se utilizar el equipamiento tecnolgico nico

trabajar en el desarrollo de una metodologa de inspeccin por en-
sayos no destructivos (END), adems de la elaboracin y coordina-
cin del plan de ensayos correspondiente, el cual incluye pruebas de
muy diversa naturaleza, tales como tests ambientales, pticos, me-
cnicos, elctricos, no destructivos y de radiacin. En concreto, en
la fase correspondiente a ensayos ambientales, se llevarn a cabo
ciclos de temperatura, presin y humedad de forma independiente.
Adicionalmente, se aplicar la metodologa de ensayos de vida al-
tamente acelerada (HALT/HASS) que incluyen rampas elevadas de
temperatura, humedad y vibracin, para los que CATEC dispone de
cmaras de ensayo especficas. En lo concerniente a ensayos me-
cnicos, se llevarn a cabo tambin ensayos pertinentes para garan-
tizar el cumplimiento de los requisitos establecidos en el proyecto.
Entre los END incluidos se destacan la inspeccin por ultrasonido
y visual mediante prismas y microscopio ptico. El equipo de traba-
jo de CATEC est compuesto por el Dr. Fernando Lasagni, jefe del
rea de Materiales y Procesos del centro y responsable de la fase
de validacin del proyecto, y los ingenieros Sergio Gonzlez y Borja
Rodrguez, adems de un equipo especializado en END.

CVR (Italy). This initiative which will be developed over three years
was started up in late 2012 at a meeting held in the city of San Se-
bastian. The project has a total budget of 4 million euros and has
received financing under the 7th Framework Program.
Non-destructive tests at CATEC
CATEC is responsible for various tasks in the Area of Materials
and Processes to validate the designs developed and determine
the operating and failure limits. This will involve use of the unique
technological equipment offered by this Andalusian technological
agency. It will also work on the development of an inspection meth-
odology using non-destructive testing (NDT) and drafting and coor-
dination of the corresponding testing schedule, which will include
environmental, optical, mechanical, electrical, non-destructive and
radiation tests. The phase corresponding to environmental test-
ing will include independent tests of temperature, pressure and
humidity.
HALT/HASS methodology will also be applied with high tem-
perature, humidity and vibration ramp rates in CATEC's dedicated
testing chambers, along with mechanical tests to ensure compli-
ance with the project specifications. The NDT will include ultra-
sonic and visual inspection using prisms and optical microscopes.
The team at CATEC consists of Dr. Fernando Lasagni, head of the
Materials and Processes Department and supervisor of the project
validation phase, and the engineers Sergio Gonzlez and Borja
Rodrguez, together with a team specializing in NDT.

en su estado oxidado muestran un color diferente al que presenta
en su estado reducido. Esta tecnologa permite cambiar el color de

voltaje. Con ello, el proyecto pretende ofrecer mejoras significativas
en las prestaciones en comparacin con otros sistemas, como un
mayor nivel de oscurecimiento, una mayor velocidad de conmuta-
cin y un tiempo de vida ms prolongado, por medio de procesos
sencillos y econmicos.
Las nuevas ventanas inteligentes incluirn un elemento muy inno-
vador, ya que otro de los objetivos del proyecto es integrar sistemas
de iluminacin OLED transparentes en la superficie de la ventana.
Este desarrollo ofrece un reseable valor aadido ya que a da de
hoy no existe un concepto similar en el mercado aeronutico. Hasta
la fecha, los OLEDs se fabrican habitualmente sobre electrodos me-
tlicos que son reflectivos (opacos), pero el proyecto IN LIGHT va a
desarrollar esta tecnologa sobre electrodos transparentes, lo que
permitir su integracin en la superficie de la ventana.
La iniciativa busca dar respuesta a la creciente demanda de siste-
mas que contribuyan a mejorar el confort de los pasajeros especial-
mente en vuelos de larga duracin. El nuevo producto representar
un elemento diferenciador para las compaas areas que en un fu-
turo lo incluyan en sus aeronaves, contribuyendo al posicionamiento
en el mercado de las empresas europeas y organismos de I+D espa-
oles involucrados en el proyecto.

OLED Technology
The IN LIGHT project involves the use of electrochromic ma-
terials which change color due to a reduction-oxidation process,
with the oxidized state having a different color to the reduced
state. This technology enables changes to the color of these in-
telligent windows by applying a small electric charge. In this way,
the project aims to offer significant improvements compared to
other systems, along with a greater degree of shade and improved
switching speed and durability by applying these simple and eco-
nomic processes.
One of the most innovative aspects of these new smart windows
is the integration of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) lighting
systems on the window surface, a new development which does
not currently exist in the aerospace market. To date, OLEDs are
usually manufactured on metallic electrodes which are reflective
(opaque), but the IN LIGHT project will develop this technology on
transparent electrodes to enable their integration on the window
surface.
This initiative seeks to meet the growing demand for systems
which contribute to improve passenger comfort, especially on
long-distance flights. The new product will offer a differentiating
feature for airlines that include the system on their aircraft in the
future, thereby contributing to the market positioning of the Euro-
pean and particularly Spanish RDI bodies involved in the project.

proceso que incluy demostraciones con aviones del ejrcito hind. El nuevo
contrato se firmar durante 2013, una vez culminen las negociaciones con
el pas asitico, que se convierte as en el quinto cliente del programa A330
MRTT. Airbus Military espera aumentar los pedidos en los prximos meses
con otros dos encargos, uno adicional con la India, y otro con Francia, hasta
alcanzar un total de 30 unidades vendidas y una facturacin de 7.500 millones

as expectativas del programa A330 MRTT, el avin de reabasteci-
miento en vuelo de Airbus Military, crecern de manera importante
durante 2013, en el que la compaa espera concretar dos importan-
tes contratos que aumentarn sus ventas y carga de trabajo para los prxi-
mos aos. En primer lugar, con el pedido de seis aviones que la compaa
ya ha confirmado para el Gobierno de India, y en segundo, con el encargo
previsto por Francia, con quien tambin se encuentra en negociaciones
para la venta de otro lote an mayor, que podra alcanzar hasta un total de
14 aeronaves. De todo ello, se beneficiar la industria aeronutica espaola
y andaluza, en especial las plantas de Airbus Military en El Puerto de Santa
Mara (Cdiz) y Tablada (Sevilla), as como otras empresas auxiliares del sec-
tor en nuestro comunidad que participan en este programa, como Sevilla
Control, Airgrup, MDU, Consur, Mesurex o Elimco, entre otras.
El fabricante aeronutico anunci el pasado mes de enero que haba
sido seleccionado por India como licitador preferente para suministrar su
avin tanquero A330 MRTT a la Fuerza Area India (IAF). Segn apunt,
esta decisin fue el resultado de un largo y pormenorizado proceso de
seleccin que incluy llevar a cabo exhaustivas demostraciones de vuelo
con la aeronave durante las cuales reabasteci mltiples tipos de cazas,
operando para ello desde la base de la IAF de Leh, situada a gran altitud.
En dicho proceso el A330 MRTT super al Ilyushin Il-78 ruso, que fue el otro
avin finalista del concurso y del que la India ya dispone de varias unidades.
Tras alcanzar el acuerdo, el gobierno hind y Airbus Military llevarn a
cabo durante los prximos meses un perodo de negociacin que se espe-
ra cerrar este mismo ao con la adjudicacin del contrato final de produc-
cin, que se prev sea de seis aparatos. La base de estos aviones estar
en la ciudad de Panagarh. No obstante, este contrato podra abrir la puerta
para la venta adicional de otras 12 unidades la Fuerza Area India, que pre-
tende ampliar su flota de aviones cisterna hasta un total de 18 aparatos.
El presidente de Airbus Military, Domingo Urea, agradeci la con-
fianza del Gobierno de India y seal su satisfaccin con la evaluacin
efectuada de las aeronaves que competan en el concurso. Ha sido un
proceso largo y duro y es para nosotros un honor haber sido escogidos.
Estamos poniendo nuestro mximo empeo en la prxima fase de ne-
gociaciones y, a largo plazo, en suministrar a la IAF el que es sin duda

result of a long and detailed selection process that included carrying
out thorough flight demonstrations during which the aircraft refuelled
multiple types of fighters, operating for it from the IAF base of Leh,
situated at a high altitude. In this process, the A330 MRTT beat the
Russian Ilyushin Il-78, which was the other finalist plane of the contest
and of which India already has multiple units.
After reaching the agreement, the Government of India and Airbus
Military will conduct a negotiation period over the coming months.
That is expected to close this year with the award of the final pro-
duction contract, expected to include six devices. The base of these
aircraft will be situated in the city of Panagarh. However, this agree-
ment could open the door to additional sales of another 12 units to
the Indian Air Force, which intends to expand its air tanker fleet to a
total of 18 aircraft.
Airbus Military CEO, Domingo Urea, thanked the Government of
India for its confidence and pointed out their satisfaction with the as-

con EE.UU., quien ha abierto una nueva licitacin para adquirir avio-
nes cisterna ms grandes que los fabricados por Boeing, ganadora
del ltimo concurso. Como ya apunt Airbus Military tras la polmica
adjudicacin a su competidor estadounidense en el anterior proce-
so, el objetivo de la compaa es seguir presentndose y optar a las
nuevas posibilidades de negocio que vaya demandando el mercado
norteamericano en los campo de los aviones militares de transporte y
reabastecimiento.

Nuevos hitos y entregas

Durante 2012, Airbus Military entreg un total de cinco aviones A330
MRTT a los ejrcitos de Australia, Arabia Saud y Reino Unido. El pro-
grama ha continuado avanzando a principios de este ao con nuevos
hitos, como la entrega del primero de los tres aviones contratados por
los Emiratos rabes Unidos, que recibir las dos unidades restantes
tambin a lo largo de este ao. Asimismo, a finales de febrero entr
oficialmente en servicio el primero de los tanqueros entregados a la
Fuerza Area Saud, que ser utilizado para el abastecimiento de los
aviones de combate de su flota. Este avin es el primero del lote de
tres A330 MRTT que el pas contrat en un principio y que ya han sido
entregados por Airbus Military. Posteriormente, fueron pedidos otros
tres cuyas entregas estn previstas para finales del ao 2014.
Por otra parte, el Ministerio de Defensa australiano ha declarado ple-
namente operativo al Airbus KC-30, nombre con el que bautiza a su
avin A330 MRTT, otorgndole el grado de Capacidad Operativa Inicial
(IOC). La Real Fuerza Area Australiana (RAAF) cuenta ya con cinco
unidades del A330 MRTT de Airbus Military, la ltima entregada en no-
viembre de 2012. A principios de diciembre lleg a su emplazamiento
final, la Base de Amberley, y ese mismo mes se completaron los cursos
de formacin del primer piloto y el primer operador de reabastecimien-
to en vuelo australianos.
El avin A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) es el nuevo mo-
delo de ltima generacin de aviones cisterna para repostaje en vue-
lo fabricado por Airbus Military. Entre sus innovaciones destacan sus
dos dispositivos de reabastecimiento situados bajo las alas y bajo el
fuselaje posterior: el sistema en prtiga ARBS (Aerial Refuelling Boom
System) fly-by-wire, y un sistema universal de reabastecimiento areo
que le permite ser reabastecido desde otro tanquero, denominado UA-
RRSI (Universal Aerial Refuelling Receptacle Slipway Installation).
Construido a partir del modelo comercial A330, esta versin es mo-
dificada en la planta de Getafe (Madrid), aunque tambin se desarrollan
importantes trabajos en el sector aeronutico andaluz. As, en Andalu-
ca se fabrica la prtiga extensible de 18 metros de longitud que forma
parte del sistema de reabastecimiento en cola; mientras que en la fac-
tora de Airbus Military en Tablada (Sevilla) se realiza el equipamiento y
la verificacin final de los sistemas hidrulico y elctrico.

With this agreement, Airbus Military would make sure of the me-
dium-term sale of about 30 aircraft. It would mean an approximate
amount of EUR 7,500 million, according to the list price of the A330
commercial aircraft, the subsequent amendments to its reconversion
into MRTT, and the rest of the conditioning for military use and spe-
cific requirements that each country requests.
To these prospects of an increase in the A330 MRTT order book,
in the long term, a possible contract might be added with the USA,
who has opened a new bid to purchase tankers larger than those
manufactured by Boeing (the winner of the last contest). As Airbus
Military said after the controversial award to its USA competitor in the
previous process, the company's goal is to continue performing and
competing for the new business opportunities that the USA market
Airbus Military A330 MRTT, being the last one delivered in November
2012. In early December it reached its final location, the Base Amber-
ley, and the training courses for the first pilot and the first refuelling
operator in Australian flights were completed the same month.
The A330 MRTT aircraft is the new model of air tankers of the lat-
est generation for in-flight refuelling manufactured by Airbus Military.
Its innovations include its two refuelling devices located below the
wings and under the rear fuselage: the Aerial Refuelling Boom Sys-
tem (ARBS) 'fly-by-wire', and a universal aerial refuelling system that
allows it to be replenished from another tanker, called Universal Aerial
Refuelling Receptacle Slipway Installation (UARRSI).
Built out of the A330 commercial model, this version is reconfig-
ured in the base of Getafe (Madrid), although some important works
are also developed in the Andalusian aircraft sector. Thus, the 18-me-
tre-long extending pole that is part of the tail boom system is manu-
factured in Andalusia. While the equipment and the final verification
of the hydraulic and electric systems are carried out in the Airbus Mili-
tarys factory located in Tablada (Seville).

New milestones and deliveries

During 2012, Airbus Military delivered a total of five A330 MRTT
aircraft to the armies of Australia, Saudi Arabia and the UK. The pro-
gramme has continued moving forward since the beginning of this
year with new milestones, such as the delivery of the first of the three
aircraft hired by the United Arab Emirates, which will also receive the
two remaining units along this year. Likewise, the first of the tankers
delivered to the Saudi Air Force entered into service officially in late
February, which will be used for the supply of the fighter aircraft of its
fleet. This aircraft is the first of the batch of three A330 MRTT that the
country initially hired and that has already been delivered by Airbus
Military. Subsequently, other three were ordered. Their deliveries are
scheduled for late 2014.
Moreover, the Australian Ministry of Defence has declared the Air-
bus KC-30 fully operational. This is the name by which its A330 MRTT
is baptized, by granting it the degree of initial operational capability
(IOC). The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) now has five units of the

la Autorizacin Operativa Inicial de carcter
militar, que la compaa espera recibir en las
prximas semanas, lo que prepara el camino

The A400M has entered its final stages

Airbus Military has received the complete civil type certificate from the European
Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for the A400M aircraft, a new and important
milestone facing the delivery of the first unit to French Air Forces, which will
occur during the present quarter at the FAL located in Seville. The company,
which hopes to receive the military certificate soon, is finishing the preparation
of the aircraft, which has already carried out its inauguration flight by early
march through Sevillian skies

tomer, French Air Forces. Thus, the achieve-
ment of the complete civil type certificate
means another boost from the European
Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This new
milestone is an important step almost the
final one- facing the delivery of the first pro-
duction unit of the program, scheduled for
the second quarter of this year, and which
will finally mean getting into service the mili-
tary aircraft with state-of-the-art technology.
According to Airbus Military, last 13th March,
thanks to the concession of this certificate,
the A400M becomes the first large military
transport aircraft in the world to be designed
and certificated from the beginning accord-
ing to civil standards. Nowadays, the military
Initial Operational Authorization, which the
company hopes to receive in the next weeks,
that is, the first step to fulfill the delivery of the
aircraft as scheduled.
Norbert Lohl, EASA director of Certificates
was the one in charge of submitting the type
certificate to Airbus Military. During the certi-
fication program, the A400M has been rigor-
ously tested to check handiness in the whole
flight envelope, both in normal conditions
and in case of breakdowns. The aircraft has
proved to have an outstanding performance
in high temperatures at the Persian Gulf, in
coldest Swedish and Canadian weather and
in the highest altitude of La Paz (Bolivia). Also,
it has been able to successfully complete
more than 300 hours of Functioning and Reli-
ability tests, showing therefore the reliability of
the TP400 engines and its systems.
After the achievement of the complete civil
certificate, the president of Airbus Military,
Domingo Urea, said that it is a great satis-
faction to confirm that A400M has shown the
total fulfillment of strictest standards of air-
worthiness. This is the kind of planes that will
revolutionized the whole sphere of air military
transport in the coming years and therefore,
we are waiting for the first delivery with great
expectation. Also, he showed his gratitude
to all Airbus, Airbus Military and EASA em-
ployees who have worked so hard to reach
the certificate. On its turn, the director of the
A400M program, Cedric Gautier, explained
that to certificate the A400M in compliance
with civil and military standards was an impor-
tant challenge for the company, for the sup-
pliers and for EASA itself. But, since from the
very first time there was a solid framework for
certification, according to globally accepted
standards both us and the operators will ob-
tain important advantages as the plane as its
serves matures and other customers join the
program.
The manufacturer informed that there have
already started the tests of most advanced
military functions, which are necessary to ob-

do un sobresaliente rendimiento en las altas temperaturas del Golfo
Prsico, en el fro de Suecia y Canad y a la elevada altitud de La Paz
(Bolivia). Adems, ha logrado completar con xito ms de 300 horas
de pruebas de Funcionamiento y Fiabilidad, demostrando as la soli-
dez de los motores TP400 y de sus sistemas.
Tras la obtencin del certificado civil completo, el presidente de Air-
bus Military, Domingo Urea, seal que es una enorme satisfaccin
tener la confirmacin de que el A400M ha demostrado su total cum-
plimiento de los ms estrictos estndares de aeronavegabilidad. ste
es un avin que en los prximos aos va a revolucionar el mbito del
transporte militar areo y por ello aguardamos con gran expectacin
la primera entrega. Asimismo, mostr su agradecimiento a todos los
empleados de Airbus, de Airbus Military y de EASA que han trabajado
para conseguir esta certificacin. Por su parte, el director del progra-
ma A400M, Cedric Gautier, manifest que certificar el A400M segn
los estndares civiles y militares ha supuesto un enorme reto para la
empresa, los proveedores y la propia EASA. Pero al ofrecer desde el
primer da un marco slido para la certificacin, segn estndares
mundialmente aceptados, tanto nosotros como los operadores ob-
tendremos importantes ventajas a medida que el avin vaya madu-
rando en servicio y otros clientes se incorporen al programa.
El fabricante inform que ya han comenzado las pruebas de las
funciones militares ms avanzadas, necesarias para obtener la auto-
rizacin de tipo militar, y entre las que se incluyen el reabastecimiento
en vuelo, el lanzamiento areo de suministros y paracaidistas y el vue-
lo a baja cota, todo ello con resultados muy alentadores. La flota de
cinco aparatos de desarrollo ya tiene acumuladas en el aire en torno
a 4.800 horas a lo largo de ms de 1.600 vuelos y seguir ampliando
exhaustivamente las capacidades militares del A400M en los prxi-
mos meses.
Vuela el primer avin francs
Airbus Military, que se encuentra inmersa en los ltimos trabajos y
preparativos para la entrega del primer A400M en la FAL de Sevilla,
tambin ha alcanzado otros destacados hitos en estas ltimas sema-
nas. Precisamente una semana antes de la concesin de la certifica-
cin civil se llev a cabo el vuelo inaugural del primer avin destinado
a Francia. El avin, denominado MSN7, despeg del aeropuerto de
Sevilla, ubicado junto a la factora de la empresa, a las 11:48 horas y
aterriz de nuevo en la capital hispalense 5 horas y 42 minutos ms
tarde. Segn seal el piloto de pruebas Hugues Van Der Stichel, que
comand el vuelo, el rendimiento de la aeronave fue el esperado y
tuvimos un vuelo muy suave, lo que confirma la gran capacidad de
manejo del avin.
Esta unidad vol portando su matrcula militar francesa y los colo-
res de la bandera gala, tal y como sali en enero de la FAL y hangar de
pintura, listo para sus pruebas en el aire. El resultado de este primer
vuelo ha dado a la compaa plena confianza para su entrega en tiem-
po a la Fuerza Area francesa.
A lo largo de este ao, Airbus Military entregar un total de cuatro
aviones A440M, tres de ellos a Francia y uno a Turqua. La cartera
de pedidos del A400M totaliza en la actualidad 174 aparatos, de los
que 27 son para la Fuerza Area espaola, que recibir el primero a
finales del ao 2015. De esta cartera, 170 aviones han sido compra-
dos por los siete pases europeos promotores del programa A400M
(Blgica, Francia, Alemania, Luxemburgo, Turqua, Reino unido y Es-
paa) y cuatro por Malasia. La primera entrega comercial despeja el
horizonte de este ambicioso programa aeronutico europeo, que ha
acumulado tres aos de retraso por problemas de sobrecoste eco-
nmico y tambin tcnicos, dada la complejidad, especialmente, de
sus motores turbohlice.

Flight of the first French aircraft
Airbus Military is currently immersed in the final works and prepara-
tions for the delivery of the first A400M at the FAL of Seville, but it has also
reached other important landmarks in the last weeks. The inauguration
flight of the first aircraft for France took place just a week before the con-
cession of the civil certification. The plane, called MSN7, took off from the
airport of Seville, located close to the companys factory, at 11:48 hours
and landed again at Seville 5 hours and 42 minutes later. As remarked by
the test pilot Hugues Van Der Stichel, who commanded the flight, the
performance of the aircraft was as expected and we had a very smooth
flight, which confirmed the great operation capacity of the plane.

Throughout this year, Airbus Military will deliver a total of four

at the end of 2015. The seven European countries promoting the
A400M program (Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Turkey,

delivery clears up the horizon of this ambitious European aeronautic
program, which has accumulated three years of delay due to eco-

vicios de formacin del A400M durante 18 aos y que se llevar a
cabo a travs de la joint venture A400M Training Services, creada
de manera conjunta por ambas empresas. Los servicios adscritos
a este convenio incluyen el diseo, la construccin y la gestin de
una escuela de formacin para el A400M, la instalacin y el manteni-
miento de simuladores de vuelo y el equipamiento de entrenamiento
sinttico, y el apoyo al equipo de diseo del curso de la Fuerza Area
Real Britnica (RAF) y la capacitacin del personal. Esta escuela de
entrenamiento se construir en la base de la RAF de Brize Norton, en
la localidad de Oxfordshire, y estar lista para la primavera de 2014,

the complexity, most of all, of its turbo-prop engines.
Service contracts for customers
The imminent starting of the first A400M service will launch the
delivery schedule with customer countries of the new aircraft, which
is also motivating the sign of agreements to develop after sales and
support services. Therefore, Airbus Military has signed an agreement
with the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR),
representing France, for the provision of logistic support services to
French A400M during an 18-month period. This agreement will pro-
vide for a service according to the necessities of the French Air Forces
based on the launching agreement of A400M between OCCAR and
Airbus Military, which already plans services of Integrated Logistic
Support (ISS), as technical documentation or ground-air equipment.
Specifically, the contract covers the support of base industrial main-
tenance, management of spare parts, extended consultation service
and other services aiming the performance of satisfactory flight op-
erations in the operations base of A400M in Orleans (France).
Also, Airbus Military and Thales have reached an agreement with
the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom to provide training
services of A400M for 18 years and which will be carried out by a joint
venture A400M Training Services, created by both companies jointly.
Services ascribed to this agreement include the design, the construc-
tion and the management of a training centre for A400M, the instal-
lation and the maintenance of flight simulators and the equipment of
synthetic training, the support to the design team of the British Royal
Air Force (RAF) and the personnel training. This training centre will be
built in the RAF base of Brize Norton, at Oxfordshire, and it will be
ready for 2014 spring, coinciding with the delivery of the first plane to
the United Kingdom. These facilities will train crew and ground staff to
operate and manage with the fleet of 22 aircrafts A400M which have
been ordered by the British Army.

ubicacin, estados y movimientos logsticos internos asociados de sus stocks
y existencias. La iniciativa, que ha contado con la colaboracin del Instituto
Andaluz de Tecnologa (IAT), ha supuesto importantes mejoras para la firma
aeronutica, entre las que destacan gestionar las prioridades de almacn en
tiempo real, aumentar el control y fiabilidad de los stocks, y reducir los flujos
de informacin entre departamentos y el tiempo de preparacin de sus pedidos

l sector aeronutico es uno de los sectores tecnolgicamente ms
punteros, sobre todo en lo que refiere al diseo y fabricacin de sus
productos, pero sin embargo, los flujos de informacin que los
gestionan estn bastante por detrs de otros sectores que a priori son
menos tecnolgicos. Los movimientos relacionados con el flujo de docu-
mentacin escrita (informes, inventarios) o digital (correos electrnicos), e
incluso el uso de mano de obra cualificada en tareas de bsqueda y segui-
miento de materiales, piezas o herramientas pueden significar un despilfa-
rro de tiempo que en muchas empresas se ha ido asumiendo con un es-
fuerzo personal poco productivo. Todo ello, junto con la exigencia de las
compaas tractoras para que sus subcontratistas implanten una gestin
integral en sus procesos, y el crecimiento que estn experimentando mu-
chas empresas auxiliares, y por tanto, sus movimientos logsticos internos
y externos, estn convirtiendo en una necesidad cada vez ms presente
la reconversin y mejora de sus departamentos de logstica.
En este contexto, la empresa Aerotecnic-Mecatecnic ha llevado a
cabo una iniciativa innovadora con el fin de dar un salto en la mejora de
los procedimientos internos y dotar de mayor eficiencia a sus procesos
de gestin. La firma andaluza ha implantado un nuevo Sistema de Ges-
tin de Almacenes e Intralogstica (SGA) que permite conocer en tiempo
real la ubicacin, estados y movimientos logsticos internos asociados
de sus stocks y existencias. Con este proyecto, la firma busca optimi-

terms, particularly in relation to the design and manufacture of
its products. However, the information flows they manage tend
to be less efficient than other sectors which at first glance seem less
technological. Documentation flows, whether written (reports, invento-
ries) or digital (e-mails) and even qualified labor used for searches and
tracking of materials, parts and tools can result in a major loss of time
which in many companies requires unproductive personal efforts to
overcome. In addition, major manufacturers are now requiring subcon-
tractors to implement integrated management in their processes and

need for reconversion and improvement of logistics departments.
In this context, the company Aerotecnic-Mecatecnic has under-
taken an innovative initiative with the aim of making a major improve-
ment in its internal procedures to achieve greater efficiency in its man-
agement processes. This Andalusian company has started up a new
Warehouse Management System (WMS) which provides real-time
information on internal stock logistics, including their location, status
and movements. Through this project, the company aims to optimize
its resources, improving the quality of the services offered to custom-
ers in the sector and, in general, to gain competitiveness and capability
to take on new challenges in the aerospace industry.

time, greater control and reliability of stocks and a reduction in the information
flow between departments and the preparation time necessary for its orders

damental para el crecimiento y la mejora en la competitividad, afirma
Daniel Castillo, director de Operaciones de Aerotecnic-Mecatecnic.
Ahora bien el nivel tecnolgico en la gestin de la informacin est en la
actualidad, y salvo honrosas excepciones -casi siempre de las grandes
empresas-, muy por detrs del nivel de la piezas o procesos en los que
se trabaja en aeronutica, aade. De ah la necesidad de avanzar en la
mejora de la calidad de la gestin interna en las empresas para seguir
situando al sector a la vanguardia en innovacin en todos sus procesos.
Aerotecnic ya vena trabajando en la posibilidad de implantar un sistema
que le permitiera controlar mejor los movimientos logsticos y la gestin de la
informacin, pero el hito que ha dado el impulso definitivo para embarcarse
en esta iniciativa ha sido la adjudicacin de un importante paquete de piezas
elementales para el avin A350, programa que tendr una alta cadencia y
que cuenta en sus estructuras con un porcentaje muy alto de titanio, que es
un material de gran coste. Entendamos que participando en este progra-
ma, donde la fabricacin llegar a un total de doce aviones al mes, era el mo-
mento idneo para implantar estas herramientas de gestin que aportaran
mayor productividad y capacidad a la empresa, subraya Castillo.

La empresa ya gestiona casi el 100% de movimientos e informacin
que se genera desde almacn a travs del sistema, de manera que
departamentos como Compras, Produccin, Calidad e incluso Admi-
nistracin han visto optimizados las transacciones que realizaban con
logstica. Mencin especial merece la solucin que el SGA ha dado al
Order and Delivery, la nueva filosofa de entrega y gestin de inventario
que Airbus Military ha implantado en sus proveedores y que gracias a
este proyecto se ha implantando de la manera ms eficaz y eficiente po-
sible. En cuanto a productos, la instalacin del sistema de gestin se ha
llevado a cabo a todos los niveles: materia prima, herramientas, utillaje,
producto en proceso, producto terminado, productos qumicos, etc.
Objetivo: Sistema de Gestin de las Operaciones
Para la implantacin del SGA se ha seguido la metodologa de tra-
bajo Lean y ha implicado la realizacin de distintos VSM (anlisis de la
cadena de valor o Value Stream Mapping) con los que se fueron esta-
bleciendo requisitos e identificando aquellos desperdicios o aspectos
innecesarios tanto en procesos como en flujo de informacin. Pos-
teriormente, y durante la adecuacin de la aplicacin a los requisitos
obtenidos, un grupo multidisciplinar de trabajo Aerotecnic-IAT ha ido
creando nuevos procedimientos que eliminen o minimicen las ineficien-
cias detectadas utilizando siempre el SGA como herramienta.
El objetivo de la empresa es seguir avanzando en hacia un completo
Sistema de Gestin de las Operaciones (SGO) que, partiendo del SGA
ya desarrollado y utilizando el Lean Service como herramienta de anlisis
para su ejecucin, permita ofrecer a tiempo real la visibilidad del estado
de nuestros procesos y realizar las planificaciones y replanificaciones ne-
cesarias con mayor eficiencia, utilizando para ello un cuadro de mandos
integral de operaciones, apunta Daniel Castillo. Se trata de ir integran-
do, sobre el motor de la gestin de los movimientos y almacenamientos
(SGA), nuevas capacidades en materia de control y planificacin de la
produccin, diseo y gestin de las polticas de inventarios, y un KPI (in-
dicador clave de rendimiento o Key Performance Indicators) especfico
para la direccin de operaciones en las empresas aeronuticas. Esta
herramienta permitir alcanzar dos objetivos finales: dedicar nuestros
recursos humanos de alto nivel a la optimizacin de procesos y, por tan-
to, a conseguir una mayor competitividad; y dar a nuestros clientes una
mayor visibilidad de sus programas dentro de la empresa, as como de la
disponibilidad de nuestras capacidades en todo momento.
El compromiso con la I+D y mejora continua en sus procesos ha contri-
buido, sin duda, al crecimiento y consolidacin de Aerotecnic-Mecatecnic,
que cerr 2012 con una facturacin de 6,7 millones de euros y una plantilla
de 90 profesionales. Pero su apuesta por la innovacin no acaba ah, como
demuestra su implicacin en diversos proyectos, entre los que destaca una
iniciativa multi-empresa financiada por el Centro para el Desarrollo tecnolgi-
co Industrial (CDTI) para el desarrollo de nuevas herramientas de corte en el
mecanizado de acero, titanio y fibra de carbono para la industria aeronutica.

our current position as a leading supplier for both Alestis and Airbus
Military in record time, and at the same time using highly consolidated
processes," says the company's Director of Operations. "Our mem-
bership of the Selekta Club has reinforced this alliance, as well as be-
ing an opportunity to increase our possibilities of innovation and collabora-
tion with both the IAT and other members of the club," he says.
Palpable results
The improvements achieved through the new management system
include an 80% decrease in information flow (e-mails) for warehouse,
sales, verification and program activities; the possibility of manag-
ing warehouse priorities in real time from the office, eliminating hours
of meetings and internal displacement; an increase in the reliability of
stock information and a decrease in the time necessary for preparation
of orders from the warehouse to production due to improved monitor-
ing of locations in real time. The incorporation at Mecatecnic (the other
company in the group) of materials and order management via radio
frequency terminals connected in real time using WMS has also been
a key aspect of these improvements. Nonetheless, "from an economic
point of view, the most valuable aspect of WMS is the effective and ef-
ficient management of tools, due to their importance in the process and
the price of titanium parts," says Mr. Castillo.
The company now manages nearly all movements and information
generated in the warehouse through the system, enabling departments
such as Sales, Production, Quality Control and even Administration to
optimize the transactions they perform with the logistics department.
Special mention should also be made of the WMS solution for Order and
Delivery, the new inventory management and delivery philosophy imple-
mented by Airbus Military for its suppliers, which has been incorporated
in the most effective and efficient manner possible using WMS. This new
management system has been installed on all product levels, including
raw materials, tools, tooling, product in process, finished product and
chemical products.
Objective: Operations Management System
The WMS has been implemented using Lean methodology, with ex-
ecution of Value Stream Mapping (VSM) to establish the different require-
ments and identify the losses or unnecessary aspects of the company's
processes and information flows. Subsequently, during adaption of the
application to the requirements identified, a multidisciplinary work group
consisting of members of Aerotecnic and IAT created new procedures to
eliminate or minimize the inefficient processes detected using WMS tools.
The company aims to "continue to advance towards a complete Opera-
tions Management System (OMS) based on the WMS already implemented
and using Lean Service as an analysis tool for its execution, which will enable
us to offer real-time access to the status of our processes and carry out nec-
essary planning with greater efficiency using an integrated operations control
system," says Mr. Castillo. The idea is to gradually integrate new capabilities
in the field of monitoring and planning of production, design and manage-
ment of inventory policies based on WMS and a specific KPI (Key Perform-
ance Indicator) for management of operations in aerospace companies. This
tool will enable the achievement of two end objectives: "Firstly, devotion of
top-level human resources to optimization of processes to improve competi-
tiveness; and secondly greater visibility for our customers of their programs
within the company and access to our capabilities at all times."
This commitment to RDI and ongoing improvement of processes has
undoubtedly contributed to the consolidation of Aerotecnic-Mecatecnic,
which closed 2012 with a turnover of 6.7 million euros and a workforce
of 90 professionals. However, this is not the only effort it is making in the
field of innovation. The company is involved in a variety of projects which

l sector aeronutico espaol sigue muy de cerca la expansin
econmica del mercado asitico, que presenta unas interesan-
tes oportunidades de negocio en los prximos aos debido al
crecimiento previsto en la demanda de aviones y al no menos impor-
tante respaldo decidido que diferentes gobiernos estn realizando por
desarrollar una industria aeronutica de primer nivel. Tal es el caso de
la India, donde la compaa espaola CESA ha aterrizado para llevar a
cabo uno de los proyectos industriales ms importantes del sector na-
cional en el mbito aeronutico. La empresa, especializada en el cam-
po de los sistemas y actuadores aeroespaciales, pone en marcha este
mismo mes de abril su nueva lnea de fabricacin en el gigante indio en
virtud de una alianza con Wipro Infraestructure Engineering, compaa
que acaba de inaugurar su nueva planta destinada en exclusiva a la
fabricacin de este tipo de productos para CESA. Esta colaboracin
es fruto del acuerdo suscrito entre ambas entidades en 2011 para la
produccin de componentes de ingeniera de precisin (actuadores
aeroespaciales), y supondr as la implantacin de CESA en uno de los
pases emergentes con mayor proyeccin a nivel mundial.
El proyecto se ha materializado con la inauguracin de las nuevas
instalaciones de Wipro en Devanahalli, en el entorno de la ciudad de
Bangalore, que ha supuesto una inversin de 15 millones de dlares
(unos 11,5 millones de euros). La capacidad inicial de fabricacin de

esta nueva fbrica ser de 2.000 actuadores anuales, si bien la previ-
sin es alcanzar las 8.000 unidades cuando est a pleno rendimiento. El

he Spanish aerospace industry is closely following the proc-
ess of economic expansion in Asia, which offers interesting
business opportunities in coming years due to the expected
growth in the demand for aircraft and the significant support offered
by different governments to foster the aerospace industry in these
countries. A good example in this sense is India, where the Spanish
company CESA has established itself to implement one of the most
important industrial projects in the Spanish aerospace sector. This
company specializing in aerospace systems and actuators started
up its new production plant this April in India under an alliance with
Wipro Infrastructure Engineering, which recently inaugurated the new
plant exclusively devoted to manufacture of these types of products
for CESA. This collaboration is the result of an agreement signed by
both parties in 2011 for the production of precision engineering com-
ponents (aerospace actuators) and will allow CESA to establish itself
in one of the world's most promising emerging economies.
The project was started up following the inauguration of the new
Wipro plant in Devanahalli near the city of Bangalore, which has in-
volved an investment of US$15 million (around 11.5 million euros).
This plant will have an initial output of 2,000 actuators per year, al-
though it is expected to reach 8,000 units per year when it is at full
capacity. The agreement involves transfer of both technology and the
manufacturing of some of CESA's current production lines to India.
The inauguration ceremony held on February 5 was attended by
Wipro Chairman Azim Premji, Executive Vice President Procure-
ment EADS and Airbus Klaus Richter and the heads of CESA, com-
pany CEO Jos Leal and technical and commercial director Eduardo
Chamorro, together with representatives of other important com-
panies in the industry. During the ceremony, the Chairman of Wipro
highlighted that "this alliance with a world leader such as CESA is a
major achievement for us, involving transfer of some of its production
programs from Spain to India."
Meanwhile, CESA, which is owned by EADS (60%) and Goodrich
(40%), stated that it considered Wipro as a key partner for the estab-
lishment of synergies to help the company continue to consolidate
its presence in international markets and more specifically the Asian
market. This new challenge was also seen as opening up new busi-
ness options in India. The new Wipro plant will help CEA absorb the
major workload increase expected in the coming years. Its CEO,
Jos Leal, stated that our agreement with Wipro is an opportunity
for EADS and CESA to work with a strong partner on current aero-
space programs and reach offset targets in India." He also added that
"CESA and Wipro will now be able to explore new business opportu-
nities in the Asia- Pacific region and other emerging zones."

ao su cifra de ventas, que alcanz los 67 millones de euros en 2012.
Nuevo proyecto de I+D sobre actuadores
Adems de su proyeccin y expansin internacional, CESA sigue po-
tenciando de manera especial su apuesta por la I+D con la participacin
en nuevos proyectos que permitan situarle a la vanguardia en el campo
de los sistemas de actuacin. En este sentido destaca su presencia en
la iniciativa ACTUATION 2015, perteneciente al 7 Programa Marco Eu-
ropeo, y que se centra en el desarrollo de nuevos sistemas electrome-
cnicos ms ligeros, fiables y eficientes. El proyecto est liderado por
Goodrich Actuation System y en l participan un total de 55 empresas,
universidades y centros de investigacin de 12 pases, entre ellos algu-
nos de los principales actores del sector aeronutico en general y de los
sistemas de actuacin en particular (EADS, Airbus Operations, Messier
Dowty, Alenia, SKF, BAE Systems, Harmonic Drive).
El concepto de avin elctrico es un objetivo esencial para el desa-
rrollo de la nueva generacin de aeronaves que han de reducir drstica-
mente el consumo de combustible para el cumplimiento de las nuevas
exigencias medioambientales. Para sustituir los sistemas de actuacin
hidrulicos convencionales (tuberas, bombas, depsitos, etc.) es nece-
sario, por tanto, que los nuevos sistemas electromecnicos den un paso
decisivo en trminos de coste, fiabilidad y reduccin de peso.
En este marco, el proyecto ACTUATION 2015 pretende desarrollar y
validar un conjunto de conceptos de actuacin electromecnica haciendo
especial nfasis en la estandarizacin, modularidad y escalabilidad de los
sistemas para todas las aplicaciones (mandos de vuelo, tren de aterrizaje,
puertas, inversor de empuje, hipersustentacin) y para todos los tipos de
aeronaves (aviones de negocios, regionales, comerciales y tambin heli-
cpteros). Tomando como referencia el avin A320, la iniciativa pretende
reducir los costes de ciclo de vida en un 30%, mejorar la fiabilidad en un
30% y reducir el peso del avin en aproximadamente 500kg.
La participacin de CESA en ACTUATION 2015 se engloba en dos
grandes lneas. Por un parte, trabajar en el subproyecto de tecnologas
y centrar sus esfuerzos en la optimizacin de las partes mecnicas en
trminos de materiales y lubricacin. Por otro lado, y dentro del subpro-
yecto de monitorizacin de estado (Health Monitoring), desarrollar nue-
vos conceptos de regeneracin energtica buscando un mejor aprove-
chamiento entre las funciones de consumidor/generador de potencia
de los actuadores electromecnicos. El proyecto se desarrollar hasta
finales de 2014, con un presupuesto total de 35 millones de euros, con
una contribucin de la Unin Europea de 20,2 millones de euros.

The agreement between the two companies is a reference for
Indian companies in light of the recent penetration by EADS in the
local market. Wipro provides engineering, software and production
services in various sectors apart from the aerospace industry, includ-
ing automotive, energy, and industrial sectors, and employs more
than 130,000 staff all over the world with customers in 53 countries.
Through this alliance, CESA hopes to increase its turnover from this
time onward, which topped 67 million euros in 2012.
New actuator research project
Apart from its international expansion efforts, CESA continues
to place special emphasis on RDI through participation under new
projects which position the company at the cutting edge of actuation
systems. These include its participation in the initiative ACTUATION
2015 under the 7th Framework Program of the European Commis-
sion, which focuses on the development of lighter, more reliable and
more efficient electromechanical systems. This project is coordinated
by Goodrich Actuation Systems and involves participation by a total
of 55 companies, universities and research centers from 12 coun-
tries, including leading figures of the aerospace industry and actua-
tion systems in particular (EADS, Airbus Operations, Messier Dowty,
Alenia, SKF, BAE Systems, Harmonic Drive).
The concept of a new generation of electric aircraft is an essential
aim to enable reductions in fuel consumption and comply with new
environmental requirements. In order to substitute conventional hy-
draulic actuation systems (consisting of pipes, tanks, pumps, etc.)
new electromechanical systems require considerable improvement
in terms of their cost, reliability and weight reduction.
ACTUATION 2015 aims to develop and validate a common set
of electromechanical actuation concepts, with special emphasis on
standardized, modular and scalable systems for all actuators (flight
control, main landing gear, doors, thrust reverser) and all types of
aircraft (business/regional/commercial airplanes and helicopters).
Compared to the A320 aircraft, this project aims to reduce the overall
Life Cycle Costs of actuators by 30%, improve reliability by 30% and
reduce aircraft weight by around 500 kg.
CESA is participating in two main areas under ACTUATION 2015.
Firstly, it will work on the technology subproject, focusing its efforts
on optimization of materials and lubrication for mechanical parts. Sec-
ondly, as part of the health monitoring subproject it will develop new
power regeneration concepts in order to better exploit the power con-
sumption/generation functions of electromechanical actuators. The
project will continue until late 2014, with a total budget of 35 million
euros that includes an EU contribution of 20.2 million euros.

El Centro de Formacin Profesional ADA imparte desde inicios de este curso su nuevo Ciclo
de Grado Superior orientado al sector aeronutico, compuesto de las especialidades de
Mantenimiento Aeronutico y Mantenimiento en Avinica y en el que ya se forman ms
de 60 alumnos. Se trata de una iniciativa con la que pretende reforzar su labor educativa
en reas de gran proyeccin profesional, potenciando la colaboracin con las empresas
y atendiendo a la demanda del mercado actual. En este contexto, el centro tambin ha
impulsado el Instituto ICADA, destinado a mejorar la formacin de los mandos intermedios
en la industria como paso necesario para el crecimiento empresarial

Since the beginning of this year, the ADA Vocational Training Center has been offering
its new Advanced Vocational Training Cycle for the aerospace sector, consisting of
courses in Aeronautical Maintenance and Avionics Maintenance, which now have
more than 60 students. This initiative seeks to reinforce training in areas with future
potential, fostering collaboration with companies in the industry in order to meet the
existing market demand. In this context, the Center has also started up the ICADA
Institute, an initiative aimed at improving the training of middle management staff in
the industry as a necessary step to achieve company growth

a formacin sigue siendo hoy da una de las herramientas ms im-
portantes para la mejora continua dentro de las empresas del sec-
tor aeroespacial en Andaluca, que demandan no slo licenciados
y titulados superiores en diferentes reas profesionales acadmicas sino
tambin personal tcnico capaz de desarrollar otras tareas cualificadas
en la organizacin empresarial y en la cadena de suministro aeronutico.
Hacia este objetivo centra su actividad el Centro de Formacin Empresa-
rial ADA, en Sevilla, que desde este curso imparte un nuevo Ciclo de Gra-
do Superior en Aeronutica a travs de dos especialidades: Tcnico en
Mantenimiento Aeromecnico y Tcnico en Mantenimiento de Avinica.
Ms de 60 jvenes alumnos se estn formando actualmente en estas
nuevas especialidades aeronuticas, cuyas plazas ofertadas en su primer
ao han sido cubiertas en su totalidad. De hecho el centro ya trabaja para
la incorporacin de un tercer grupo dentro de la modalidad de Manteni-
miento Aeromecnico para el prximo curso educativo 2013-2014. Segn
explica Javier Fernndez-Montes, director del centro ADA, cuentan con
una cartera de solicitudes suficientes para completar el prximo ao, al
final del cual se graduar la 1 Promocin del ciclo superior aeronutico.
Ambos ciclos estn formados por dos cursos acadmicos que cul-
minan con un periodo final de 390 horas de prcticas en empresas del
sector aeronutico con las que el centro mantiene acuerdos de cola-
boracin y apoyo para el desarrollo del programa, como Airbus Mili-
tary, Aernnova, Consur, UMI, Sevilla Control, Alestis, Galvatec, Meupe,
Carbures o Elimco. El programa formativo est compuesto por m-
dulos tericos para cada una de las especialidades pero tambin por
mdulos prcticos que se realizan en los talleres del centro y en los que
los alumnos ponen en prctica los conocimientos y habilidades apren-
didas. En el caso de la modalidad de Mantenimiento Aeromecnico,
las clases tericas incluyen reas temticas sobre motores, sistemas
de aeronaves, materiales y estructuras, hidrulica y neumtica, y nave-
gacin, entre otras; mientras que en el de Mantenimiento en Avinica
integra otras materias relacionadas con sistemas elctricos y electrni-
cos, instrumentalizacin, sistemas mecnicos, comunicaciones o sis-
temas de vuelo automtico. A estas hay que sumar otras asignaturas
comunes sobre legislacin, seguridad o mantenimiento de aeronaves
en Andaluca y otras aadidas como tcnicas aeroportuarias, ingls
tcnico, fsica o matemticas, que aportan un complemento adicional
a la formacin de los jvenes alumnos.
Las clases son impartidas por un profesorado altamente cualificado
y con una gran trayectoria docente y profesional en sus diferentes m-
bitos de conocimiento. Asimismo, el centro cuenta con unas instalacio-
nes modernas y funcionales de ms de 6.000 metros cuadrados, entre
las que adems de las amplias aulas y talleres de trabajo, dispone de
material aeronutico de primer nivel para los ejercicios prcticos, como
dos helicpteros y una avioneta. Como novedad importante, el centro
ha firmado recientemente un acuerdo de colaboracin con el centro de
Formacin de Tcnicos de Mantenimiento de Aeronaves de Madrid (CI-
THE), para la obtencin de la Licencia de Aviacin Civil LMA, de forma
que sus alumnos podrn graduarse con la doble titulacin de Tcnico
Superior y la Licencia en Clase A reconocida en todo el mbito europeo.
ADA: 40 aos de experiencia formativa
Para Javier Fernndez-Montes, la apuesta por la formacin profe-
sional en mbitos como el sector aeronutico debe ser una prioridad,
incentivando la cualificacin de profesionales y tcnicos que hoy tienen
una gran salida en el mercado laboral porque las propias empresas lo
estn demandando. En este sentido, desde el centro se aboga por un
modelo similar a la formacin profesional alemana, que promueva un
mayor contacto con la empresa y sirva para cubrir las necesidades que
demande la industria en sus diferentes sectores. Por ello, destaca su
participacin en el desarrollo del nuevo ciclo superior, aportando tanto
material para las clases prcticas como sus prioridades en cuanto al per-
sonal cualificado que requieren para su actividad productiva.
Esta es la filosofa que el centro formativo ADA viene implantando des-
de su constitucin en 1967, cuando fue impulsado, de forma altruista,
por un grupo de empresarios y colaboradores en el barrio sevillano de

raining continues to be one of the most important tools for
the ongoing improvement of companies in the Andalusian
aerospace industry. A demand exists not only for university
graduates and holders of advanced vocational certificates in different
professional fields, but also technical staff capable of qualified work in
the area of business organization and aerospace supply chains. The
ADA Vocational Training Center in Seville is looking to meet this need
through its Advanced Vocational Training Cycle in Aeronautics, con-
sisting of two courses for Aeromechanical Maintenance Technicians
and Avionics Maintenance Technicians.
More than 60 young people are currently participating in these new
courses, with the positions offered in its first year being fully covered.
In fact, the ADA is already working to incorporate a third group in the
Aeromechanical Maintenance course for 2013-2014. Javier Fernn-
dez-Montes, Director of the ADA Center, indicated that he has a com-
plete portfolio of applications for the coming year, at the end of which
the participants of the first advanced course will graduate.
Both courses have a duration of two academic years. This is capped
off with a final period of 390 hours of work experience with different
aerospace companies that have agreed to support the development
of the program, including Airbus Military, Aernnova, Consur, UMI,
Sevilla Control, Alestis, Galvatec, Meupe, Carbures and Elimco. The
training program consists of theoretical modules for each specialty
area and practical modules carried out in the workshops of the cent-
er, during which the students have the opportunity to put into prac-
tice the knowledge and skills they have learned. The Aeromechanical
Maintenance course includes theoretical classes covering areas such
as engines, aircraft systems, materials and structures, hydraulic and
pneumatic systems and navigation systems. Meanwhile, the Avionics
Maintenance Course includes other fields such as electrical and elec-
tronic systems, instruments, mechanical systems, communications
and autopilot systems. These modules are complemented with other
common subjects that include legislation, aircraft maintenance and
safety in Andalusia and other additional areas such as airport tech-
niques and English for technical, physics and mathematical work,
thereby reinforcing the core training these young students receive.
The classes are offered by highly qualified teaching staff with sig-
nificant professional and teaching careers in their different specialty
areas. The center itself is equipped with modern and functional
facilities covering an area of 6,000 m2, including large classrooms
and workshops and top-level aeronautical material for practical ex-
ercises, including two helicopters and a light aircraft. An important
new development is the recent signing by the center of an agree-
ment with the Aircraft Maintenance Technician Training Center of
Madrid (CITHE) so that students of the ADA can graduate with a
double qualification as both an Advanced Technician and a Class
A LMA Civil Aviation Licence holder, a qualification which is recog-
nized throughout Europe.

ICADA comenz en marzo su tercer programa formativo y en sus clases ya han
participado mandos intermedios de empresas y entidades aeronuticas como Airbus,
Aernnova, Magtel, Aerpolis o Canagrosa
ICADA started its third training program in March, with participation by middle
management staff of various aerospace companies and institutions such as Airbus,
Aernnova, Magtel, Aeropolis and Canagrosa
San Pablo, siempre desde una visin de compromiso social con el de-
sarrollo formativo de las personas. La electrnica y la automocin fueron
sus pilares formativos iniciales, a los que sum hace unos aos la infor-
mtica y ahora la aeronutica. El centro se ubica actualmente en la zona
de Parque Alcosa, tras la construccin de un nuevo edificio multifuncio-
nal que cuenta con capacidad para albergar un total de 500 alumnos y
ya tiene ms de 250 matriculados.
En la actualidad el centro ofrece, adems de los ciclos de Grado Su-
perior en Aeronutica, los ciclos de Grado Medio en Electromecnica de
Vehculos, Equipos Electrnicos de Consumo y Sistemas Microinform-
ticos y Redes, aunque estos ltimos de manera concertada con la Jun-
ta de Andaluca. Asimismo, ADA imparte el curso de preparacin para
la prueba de acceso a Grado Superior, y otras actividades formativas
como cursos de ingls.
Escuela de mandos intermedios
En el marco de esta necesidad de proporcionar una mayor solucin
a la cualificacin de profesionales tcnicos, el centro ha dado un nuevo
salto con la creacin y la puesta en marcha del Instituto de Capacitacin
de Mandos Intermedios ICADA, enfocado a la formacin de los man-
dos intermedios en la empresa. Creemos que la formacin continua
en las empresas debe ser abierta, con contacto con otros sectores que
pueden aportar sinergias al trabajo de cada profesional. En Espaa hay
muchos programas de formacin de alta direccin pero existe una gran
ausencia en el campo de los mandos intermedios, que son tambin muy
importantes para que se cumplan los objetivos de la empresa. Nuestro
lema es el liderazgo necesario, indica Javier Fernndez-Montes.
La iniciativa est destinada a todo tipo de mandos intermedios y su
programa gira en torno a tres mdulos, cada uno de ellos compuestos
por diferentes temas: Competencias de Eficacia Personal (Desarrollo
Personal y Profesional, Gestin del Tiempo, Toma de Decisiones); Com-
petencias Intratgicas (Trabajo en Equipo, Motivacin, El Rol del Mando
Intermedio, La Comunicacin Efectiva en el Mando intermedio); y las
Competencias Estratgicas (Negociacin). Surgido en 2010, ICADA
cuenta con la colaboracin de la Robert H. Smith Business School de la
Universidad de Maryland y la Red Internacional de Escuelas de Mandos
Intermedios, con gran experiencia en pases de Latinoamrica. El centro
inici a principios de marzo su tercer curso y en sus clases ya han partici-
pado mandos intermedios de empresas y entidades aeronuticas como
Airbus, Aernnova, Magtel, Aerpolis o Canagrosa o de otros importan-
tes sectores como Renault, Citroen o Grupo Azvi.

ADA: 40 years in training
In the opinion of Javier Fernndez-Montes, commitment to voca-
tional training has to be a priority in a field such as the aerospace indus-
try, with incentives for qualification of professionals and technicians
who now have major opportunities in the labor market because the
companies themselves are demanding these roles. The ADA Center
adopts a similar approach to the German vocational training model,
which promotes greater contact with companies and ensures that the
needs of different sectors are effectively met. That is why the new ad-
vanced course places special emphasis on practical classes as one
of its priorities, enabling the participants to acquire the skills they need
to carry out their future activity.
This is the philosophy which ADA has applied since its inception
in 1967, when it was started up on an altruistic basis by a group of
businessmen and partners in the San Pablo district of Seville to carry
out social work and vocational training. Its main focus was initially on
electronics and automotive training. This has been complemented in
recent years with IT and aeronautical training courses. The center is
currently located near the Alcosa Park following the construction of a
new multi-purpose building with a capacity of 500 students. Currently
there are 250 students enrolled at the Center.
Apart from the Advanced Aeronautical Courses, the center also of-
fers intermediate courses in Vehicle Electromechanics, Electronic Ap-
pliances and Microcomputer Systems and Networks, the latter cours-
es being offered jointly with the Andalusian Regional Government.
ADA also provides courses to prepare the entrance exams for the
Advanced Cycle and other training activities such as English courses.
Middle Management Training Institute
The center has also made another significant step to provide better
solutions for the qualification of technical professionals following the
start-up of the Middle Management Training Institute (ICADA), which
focuses on training for middle management staff of companies. We
believe in an open approach to ongoing training, involving contact with
other sectors which can offer synergies for the work carried out by each
professional. In Spain there are many training programs for upper man-
agement but there is a major gap in the field of middle management,
which also plays an important role in achieving company objectives.
Our slogan is The leadership needed, says Javier Fernndez-Montes.
This initiative is aimed at all types of middle management staff and
the program is built around three modules, each consisting of differ-
ent topics: Personal Effectiveness Skills (Personal and Professional
Development, Time Management, Decision-Making); Interactive Skills
(Team Work, Motivation, the Role of Middle Management, Effective
Communication); and Strategic Skills (Negotiation). ICADA started out
in 2010 and includes collaboration by the Robert H. Smith Business
School of the University of Maryland and the International Network
of Middle Management Schools, with significant experience in Latin
American countries. The center started its third course in early March
and its classes have involved participation by middle management
staff from aerospace companies and institutions such as Airbus, Aern-
nova, Magtel, Aeropolis and Canagrosa and important companies
from other sectors such as Renault, Citroen and Grupo Azvi.

La industria aeroespacial andaluza estar presente una edicin ms en el Saln Internacional

de la Aeronutica y el Espacio de Pars (Francia), que se celebra el prximo mes de junio,
con el fin de consolidar su papel en el escenario europeo y establecer contactos y acuerdos
con las principales compaas internacionales que posteriormente se traduzcan en nuevos
contratos y carga de trabajo para el sector. La delegacin andaluza, coordinada por Extenda
con la colaboracin del cluster Hlice, acudir presentando como slidas credenciales un
nuevo crecimiento en las exportaciones, que en 2012 alcanzaron los 1.051 millones de euros

as empresas del cluster aeroespacial en Andaluca participarn
el prximo mes de junio en una nueva edicin del Saln Interna-
cional de la Aeronutica y el Espacio Le Bourget, la feria ms im-
portante del calendario anual en el sector a nivel mundial y en la que se
darn cita, una vez ms, los principales fabricantes y compaas de la in-
dustria aeronutica, defensa y espacio. En el evento, como viene siendo
habitual, no slo se darn a conocer los ltimas novedades y tecnologas
relacionadas con este mbito en el contexto global, sino que tambin
y lo ms importante se presentarn las posibilidades de negocio en el
mercado europeo internacional para los prximos aos.
La delegacin andaluza acudir con el fin de consolidar el papel cre-
ciente de la industria aeronutica en el escenario europeo y establecer
contactos y acuerdos con los actores internacionales ms destacados
que posteriormente puedan convertirse en nuevos contratos y carga de
trabajo para el sector de la regin.
Como en aos anteriores, la expedicin est organizada por la Con-
sejera de Economa, Innovacin, Ciencia y Empleo, a travs de Extenda-
Agencia Andaluza de Promocin Exterior, y cuenta con la colaboracin
del Cluster Hlice, que encabeza la lista de empresas y entidades que
participarn en el stand andaluz. La delegacin est compuesta por un
total de diez firmas e instituciones, que son Aertec, Aerosertec, Skylife
Engineering, Sofitec, MDU, UMI Aeronutica, TEAMS y el Parque Tecno-
lgico Aeroespacial de Andaluca Aerpolis, adems del propio Cluster
Hlice. La participacin del sector andaluz estar cofinanciada con fon-
dos procedentes de la Unin Europea, con cargo al Programa Operativo
Feder de Andaluca 2007-2013.
Este ao, la presencia andaluza en Le Bourget est prevista en un pa-
belln espaol de 600 metros cuadrado ubicado en el Hall 1, que ser
coordinado por la Asociacin Espaola de Tecnologas de Defensa,
Aeronutica y Espacio (TEDAE) y que acoger al resto de empresas y
representantes de la industria nacional. No obstante, est previsto que
numerosas compaas y firmas del sector espaol y andaluz asistan de
manera individual a la feria, bien participando en los encuentros bilatera-
les o reuniones de trabajo incluidos dentro del programa o a travs de los
contactos comerciales previos establecidos por las empresas.
El certamen, que fue creado en 1909 y cumple este ao su 50 edicin,
tendr lugar en el centro de exposiciones de Le Bourget en Pars, del 17
al 23 de junio. Considerado como el encuentro lder mundial del sector
de la aviacin y la industria aeroespacial, su ltima edicin en 2011 reuni
a unas 2.100 firmas que exhibieron sus principales productos y servicios,
y 300 delegaciones institucionales de 100 pases. En total recibi ms de
204.000 visitas, de los que unos 151.000 fueron profesionales y expertos
de la industria aeronutica de todo el mundo. Asimismo, recibi a 3.200
periodistas y se expusieron ms de 150 aviones y aeronaves de los prin-
cipales constructores internacionales.
Para este ao, la organizacin espera mantener o superar dichas ci-
fras de participacin, animada por la posible exposicin de dos de los
aviones ms esperados por la industria area en la actualidad: el avin
de transporte militar A400M, que podra presentar su primera unidad en-
tregada a Francia, y el A350, cuyo vuelo inaugural tambin est previsto
para mediados de este ao. El calendario de actividades del encuentro
ser similar al de las ltimas ediciones, con los primeros cuatro das dedi-
cados en exclusiva para visitantes profesionales y los tres das posterio-
res con acceso al pblico general.
Nuevo rcord en exportaciones
El cluster aeroespacial andaluz acudir a Le Bourget 2013 presen-
tando como slidas credenciales un nuevo crecimiento en sus expor-
taciones, tras cerrar 2012 con un nuevo rcord histrico en este apar-
tado, con un total de 1.051 millones de euros facturados en ventas al
exterior. Esta cifra representa un incremento del 5,8% respecto a 2011,
en el que las exportaciones aeronuticas andaluzas alcanzaron los
998 millones de euros. Los principales destinos de estas ventas fueron
Francia, Alemania, EE.UU. Mxico e Indonesia, con importantes cre-
cimientos en relacin al ejerci anterior; mientras que otros mercados
destacados fueron Polonia, Brasil, Emiratos rabes Unidos, Ghan y

for a new landing
The Andalusian aerospace industry will attend once more the International Paris
Airshow (France), to be held next June, in order to strengthen its role in the European
scene and establish contacts and agreements with major international companies
subsequently translated into new contracts and workload for the sector. The
Andalusian delegation, coordinated by Extenda with the collaboration of Hlice Cluster,
will participate with the presentation of solid credentials as a new growth in exports,
which in 2012 amounted to 1,051 million euros

ompanies in the aerospace cluster in Andalusia will partici-
pate next June in a new edition of the International Paris Air-
show and Space Le Bourget, the most important fair in the
annual calendar in the industry worldwide and which will gather to-
gether, once again, the leading manufacturers and companies in the
aviation industry, defense and space. In the event, as usual, not only
will be presented the latest developments and technologies related to
this field in the global context, but also -and what is more important-
there will be business opportunities in the international European mar-
ket for the coming years.
The Andalusian delegation will go to consolidate the growing role
of the aviation industry in the European scene and establish contacts
and agreements with leading international actors that may become
later new contracts and workload for the sector in the region. As in
previous years, the expedition is organized by the Ministry of Econ-
omy, Innovation, Science and Employment, through Extenda -Trade
Promotion Agency of Andalusia, and it has the support of the Hlice
Cluster, which tops the list of companies and organizations that are
involved in the Andalusian stand. The delegation is composed of a to-
tal of ten companies and institutions, which are: Aertec, Aerosertec,
Skylife Engineering, Sofitec, MDU, UMI Aeronutica, TEAMS and An-
dalusian Aerospace Technology Park Aerpolis, as well as the Hlice
Cluster. The participation of the Andalusian sector will be co-financed
with funds from the European Union, under the FEDER Program for
Andalusia 2007-2013.
This year, the Andalusian presence in Le Bourget will be in a Span-
ish pavilion of 600 square meters located in Hall 1, to be coordinated
by the Spanish Association of Defense Technology, Aeronautics and
Space Administration (TEDAE) and it will host other companies and
national industry representatives. However, it is expected that many
companies and firms from the Spanish and Andalusian industry will in-
dividually attend the fair, by participating in bilateral meetings or work-
shops included within the program or through business contacts pre-
viously established by the companies. The Andalusian participation
in 2011 resulted in a very positive outcome, which included, among
other milestones, the signing of an agreement between the Govern-
ment of Andalusia and Airbus Military for the implementation of a plan
for R & D + i in the community, or a cooperation agreement with Safran
which resulted in the award of a contract to the Center for Advanced
Aerospace Technologies (CATEC) to develop a test bench to check
the gas command of the A350 XWB.
The French international exhibition, which this year celebrates its
50th edition, will be held in the traditional exhibition center of Le Bour-
get in Paris, from 17 to 23 June. Regarded as the worlds leader meet-
ing of the aviation and aerospace industry, the latest edition brought
together some 2,100 firms and 300 institutional delegations from 100
countries. In total, it received over 204,000 visitors, of which about
151,000 were professionals and experts from the aviation industry.
Also, there were exposed more than 150 airplanes and aircrafts of
leading international manufacturers. For this year, the organization
hopes to maintain or exceed those figures of participation, encour-
aged by the potential exposure of two of the most important aircrafts
today: the A400M military transport aircraft, which could present its
first unit delivered to France, and A350, which inaugurational flight is
also planned for this summer. The calendar of activities dedicates, as
usual, its first four days only to trade visitors and three days for the
general public.
New record in exportations
The andalusian aerospace cluster will attend Le Bourget 2013 show-
ing as solid credentials a new growth in exportations after closing 2012
with a new record, with a total of 1.051 million euros in foreign sales, ac-

ce exportador del sector a nivel nacional, Andaluca reforzar, casi con
toda seguridad, su papel como segunda comunidad por volumen de
ventas al exterior en el sector aeronutico, slo por detrs de Madrid, y
con una evolucin plenamente creciente en la ltima dcada. Una situa-
cin que previsiblemente seguir a la alza en los prximos aos despus
de la entrada a pleno rendimiento de la Lnea de Ensamblaje Final (FAL)
del A400M en Sevilla y el comienzo de la produccin en serie del A350,
proyectos en los que estn implicadas numerosas empresas andaluzas.

European students and professionals gathered together at the First Symposium

on UAVs in Seville
The School of Engineering of Seville became in early March the discussion and knowledge forum on the latest technologies and services related to un-
manned aircraft (UAV) and Flight Control Systems in the first symposium organized by the network of students Euroavia, which includes students in Europe
belonging to aviation careers. In the event were involved students from Spain, Italy, Poland, Belgium and Romania, among other countries, and experts and
professionals from companies and institutions like the Hlice Cluster, EADS, Cassidian, the University of Seville, Milan Polytechnic University, Center for Ad-
vanced Aerospace Technologies (CATEC) Aerpolis Aerospace Technology Park, MDU and Skylife Engineering.
The initiative served to inform about the projects developed in Andalusia with these systems, both in business and in the field of R & D, as well as infra-
structures available in the region to companies and research teams. The symposium was supported by the Hlice Cluster, CATEC, EADS, Aerpolis,
Skylife South Delegation Engineering and the College of Aeronautical Engineering of Spain (COIAE / AIAE), and included a program of lectures and
workshops. Participants also visited several leading technological facilities, as Aerpolis, CATEC, or the basis of the National Institute for Aerospace
Technology (INTA) in Mazagn (Huelva).

Espaa, Italia, Polonia, Blgica y Rumana, entre otros pases, y expertos y profesionales de empresas e instituciones como el Cluster Hlice, EADS,

maximum speed to 250 km/h.
Other important changes in-
cluded the reinforcement and
redesign of the undercarriage
(although the somewhat narrow
wheel track was not increased),
lengthening of the rudder from
9.4 m to 9.55 m and redesign
of the front windshield and the
windows of the ejectable access
door. The prototype of this ver-
sion had its maiden flight on Oc-
tober 17, 1957 from Oberpfaffen-
hofen, little more than 20 km from
Munich.

The Air Force reaches a
decision
In July of the following year the
Ministry of Aviation, which still held
the manufacturing license under the
design contract, reached an agree-
ment for manufacture by CASA of
50 L-9 aircraft (named C-127 by the
maker), which was essentially the
Do 27A version with the Lycoming
engine, for a total of 49.8 million
pesetas, including the engines, pro-
pellers and instruments, all of which
were to be made in Spain.
The Seville factory was respon-
sible for manufacturing and as-
sembly together with the plant in
Puntales (Cdiz), which was re-
sponsible for the tail surfaces. The
first series aircraft took to the sky
on December 3, 1959 with com-
pletion of the order for 50 aircraft
in 1961 following a delay of nearly
a year, as always due to the slow
delivery of the engines. In 1959
only one engine was received,
while three were received the fol-
lowing year and the rest were re-
ceived during 1961.
In 1966 the landing gear was
changed on 48 of these aircraft to
include another with a wider wheel
track to improve stability during

larger radiator for those stationed
in desert zones (Canary Islands
and Sahara), as well as reinforce-
ments to the fixed tailplane to pro-
tect it from impacts from stones
during take-off on unprepared ter-
rain or unpaved runways.
In 1973, 26 more German-built
aircraft were purchased, consist-
ing of surplus of the Bundesluft-
waffe. Later on, 15 more were
delivered to the Sub-Secretariat of
Civil Aviation, which in turn grant-
ed these aircraft to various flying
clubs, where they were greatly
appreciated above all for the prac-
tice of skydiving.
As part of its general missions,
the Do 27 served in nearly all of the
Air Force Combat Wings as a sup-
port and liaison aircraft. The last
units provided their services for
Wing 12, Wing 14 and the Air Force
Academy and they were even used
by SAR squadrons. The surviv-
ing aircraft are currently in storage
awaiting their definitive retirement.
The Dornier offered excellent
flight performance at all times and
extraordinary STOL capabilities. It
was capable of taking off in 40 m
with a 25 knot headwind using a
maneuver consisting of applying full
throttle with air brakes activated and
flaps at 45, following which the air
brakes are released and the stick
pushed forward to lift the tail before
immediately pulling the stick back.
As the pilots themselves said, It
went up like an elevator. This gave
rise to its nickname as the Goat.

Descripcin general
Avin de enlace monoplano monomotor con cabina
cerrada y capacidad para hasta seis ocupantes, con
ala alta de planta rectangular en voladizo, tren clsi-
co fijo con patas carenadas y rueda de cola.
El ala, de fabricacin metlica, como el fuselaje,
lleva una ranura continua e ininterrumpida, flaps de
gran superficie de doble ranura, controlados por un
mando entre los dos asientos principales, con tres
posiciones de calado a 15, 35 y 45. Ambos semi-
planos disponen de sendos alerones de alabeo. Esta
configuracin le permite, adems de una mejora en
la velocidad mxima y de crucero, la entrada y salida
de la tripulacin con toda comodidad, as como un
fcil acceso para las cargas y camillas de heridos.
Asimismo, proporciona una excelente visibilidad
desde la cabina, dotada de un amplio parabrisas
envolvente.
Los empenajes, estaban dimensionados para ser efi-
caces incluso volando a velocidad reducida, siendo

Single-engine monoplane liaison aircraft with a closed
cabin and right-facing seating for up to 6 passengers,
with a high cantilever rectangular wing, classic fixed lan-
ding gear with wheel fairing and tail wheel.
The metal wings and fuselage included a continuous
slot and large double-slotted flaps controlled by con-
trols situated between the two pilot seats with three
positions at 15, 35 and 45. Both half wings had aile-
rons. Apart from improving the maximum and cruising
speed, crew entry and exit was very comfortable in this
configuration, along with ease of access to loads and
wounded on stretchers. It also offered excellent visibi-
lity from the cabin, which had an extensive panoramic
windshield.
The empennage was designed to be effective even
when flying at low speeds, with metal mobile surfaces
and fabric covering, as with the ailerons.

Circular cross-section at the front, rectangular in the
centre and oval at the rear, with a semi-monocoque
structure made entirely out of metal. The tail wheel
was attached on the last rib of the fuselage, together
with a final section which acted as the support for the
stabilizers.

Two cantilevered fixed legs attached to the fuselage
with air/oil shock absorbers and a fixed tail wheel
with oil-and-spring shock absorbers.
