architect of North Carolina

Guthridge, Williams longtime
friend and a beloved assistant
to Smith. The first since an
academic-athletic scandal that
threatened a program once
hailed as unassailable.
This title doesnt erase any
of that. It doesnt even erase
the pain from last seasons
haunting defeat, not complete-
ly. But for the first time, these
Tar Heels have light after years
in the dark. For the first time,
this moment is theirs.
But its a title beyond this
vindication and validation.
This is redemption. And, for
the first time, these Tar Heels
are champions.
At the end, when youre
watching your kids jump
around and the excitement,
Williams said, the thrill they
have theres no better feel-
ing in the world.

Daily Tar Heel, and I think its
been here longer than I have.
I tried to ask it if any of these
ideas were good adding them
to the slew of embarrassingly
important questions a dollar
store toy has counseled me on
over the last few years.
It came back with, Reply
hazy. Try again.
While I tried to buckle down
and refocus in an empty room
what we used to call back
shop a couple years ago two
tow truck employees knocked
on the back door and asked if a
Dodge Charger they were about
to tow belonged to any of us.
It threw me back to the
lecturing and inside joking
about DTH parking that I first
heard when I joined in spring
of 2014 a spiel repeated
at just about every new staff
orientation.
After I remembered that, I
was hit with flashes of memory
after memory of this place.
Theres my first semester
as an assistant editor, copy
editing the Dean Smith
commemorative issue until two
in the morning. And theres
this night 12 months ago, as
the newsroom roared to life,
then fell hauntingly silent in a
matter of seconds.
Editors crying and hugging,
sitting quietly to collect
themselves and then
soldiering on through their jobs
for another hour and a half.
When you spend 20 or

n March 30,
House Bill 2 was
officially repealed
with the passage of a
compromise bill, House
Bill 142. A compromise
should be bittersweet.
This one is sour. HB142
places a more than 3-year
moratorium on local
anti-discrimination laws
and local employment
ordinances, while leaving
bathroom use regulations
murky. The bill sparked
immediate, vigorous
condemnation from the
Human Rights Campaign
among other gay rights
groups. Their message
we cant sit still until the
end of 2020 while equal
rights for LGBTQ North
Carolinians are denied
is clear and just. Its just
not realistic in our current
political environment.
We can change that
environment by using
persuasion as well passion.
North Carolinas
constitutional make-up
makes it clear that the
legal path forward for
groups hoping to fully
repeal HB2 runs through
the democratic process
and the N.C. General
Assembly.
As it stands now,
N.C.s GOP, with its
power. State Republicans
ability to pass HB2 and
exact their pound of flesh
with HB142 has shown
their political strength.
Until those who support
LGBTQ rights persuade
enough others to be able
to gain similar statehouse
power, we can only expect
similar results.
Passionate conviction
motivates the like-minded
to action. It works less
well on those who disagree
on the basic assumptions
that underlie support for
LGBTQ rights. When
North Carolina voters
approved Amendment
1 (a state constitutional
amendment banning
same-sex marriage), they
did so with a margin of
more than 20 percentage
points. That was only five
years ago so, we think
its safe to assume that
many North Carolinians
still dont believe in fully
extending rights to the
LGBTQ community.
Given our states ideo-
logical situation, arguing
(or demanding) equality
under the law and LGBTQ
rights may not be the
best rhetorical strategy.
Instead, try convincing
others with the plenti-
ful evidence that sexual

race, to protecting sexual
orientation. The same
goes for gender identity.
Another persuasive
tactic is to address peoples
fear of the unknown. The
respect and affection
that come with becoming
friends with someone
openly outside the cis-
hetero mold provide the
best antidote to myth,
fear and outright bigotry.
Given that estimates of
the population percentage
of American adults who
identify as transgender
center around half of a
percentage point, media
will need to play a big role
in increasing the visibility
and public perception
of the humanity of
transgender people.
But the simple act of
conversationally endors-
ing LGBTQ peoples
humanity and equality (to
those without any expo-
sure to them) can go a
long way as well.
None of this is to say
that there isnt a role
for passionate political
mobilization in achieving
a real repeal for HB2.
We simply think that the
best way to win a political
battle is to have more
troops. And its up to us to
recruit them.

of college students who live
out of state to vote.
On the surface, this could
be a simple misunderstand-
ing about the rights of out-
of-state students to vote in
North Carolina. However,
this quote could be fore-
shadowing at a larger policy
change. According to North
Carolina Public Interest
Research Group (NCPIRG)
coalition partners in the
North Carolina General
Assembly, lawmakers are
currently working on a bill
to bar out-of-state students
from voting.
Regardless of the partisan
politics surrounding this
issue, a proposal to ban out-
of-state students from voting
is alarming and illegal.
Firsta ban on out-of-
state student voting violates
the North Carolina State
Constitution. There is no
question that out-of-state
students are only temporary
residents of the State, but
the State Constitution
specifically dictates that
permanent residency is not a
requirement to vote.
Article VI Section 2 of the
North Carolina Constitution
lays out basic voter qualifica-
tions, stating: Any person
who has resided in the State
of North Carolina for one
year and in the precinct,
ward, or other election dis-
trict for 30 days next preced-
ing an election ... shall be
based only on their state of
origin, arguably violating the
Privileges and Immunities
Clause.
Violation of federal law
could result in reduced
federal funding and
increased legal costs, which
would ultimately come out
of the pockets of the North
Carolina taxpayers.
Even if we dismiss
the discussion of
constitutionality altogether,
limiting voting rights for
out-of-state students is
economically irresponsible.
Already mentioned is
the possibility of increased
cost to taxpayers, but more
importantly is the risk of
reducing the out-of-state
student population and the
revenue these students bring
to the state.
North Carolina is a hub
of higher education with
out-of-state students playing
a significant role in the
University systems and the
economy in general.
For example, the higher
fees for out-of-state students
help subsidize the UNC
system and allow in-state
students to attend our great
universities at highly reduced
costs.
Out-of-state students
bring more tourism, increas-
ing business for our hotels
and restaurants, and contrib-
ute to the labor supply and
job market as well.
The right to vote is the
foundation for political
action and involvement, so to
ban out-of-state student vot-
ing is to strip these students
of their most basic method of

edge of some big changes for
this paper and my life outside
it, last night was exactly the
night I needed.

by people I practically live
with at this point, plugging
through work as Franklin
Street burns.

he National
Collegiate Athletic
Association has too
much power. Aside from
the other issues people
might have with the NCAA,
it is clear it can have direct
influence on non-sports
related political policy. This
extraordinary power was
made abundantly clear last
week with the expiration of
the deadline the association
had handed to the North
Carolina General Assembly
concerning the repeal of
controversial House Bill 2.
The NCAA makes all
the calls in determining
the location for NCAA
tournaments, including
the one that climaxed
yesterday in the National
Championship game in
Phoenix.
The economic boon
from hosting an NCAA-
sponsored championship
as big as the one last night
is tremendous. Businesses
the NCAA even here in
North Carolina.
Last week, the
Associated Press released
a projected cost of HB2,
estimated at around $3.76
billion, some of which
would have come from
the NCAAs refusal to host
tournaments in the state.
It is clear from the APs
analysis that the economic
power of the NCAA is
great. This board argues
that its power is too great.
First, lets not forget that
the economic impacts the
NCAA put onto North
Carolina affected all of us
including LGBTQ-owned
businesses.
This impact might have
been justified if the NCAA
followed their actions up
with high profile advocacy
for the community they
claimed to help, but it
seems the association had
little interest in getting that
involved.
