Revised Classroom Management Plan-Student Teaching I

Due Date: May 24th, 2016
The purpose of teaching is to enhance students views on a variety of different topics and

provide them with information that helps enhance new knowledge and or prior knowledge when

it comes to a certain piece of information and or material. Theories such as progressivism,

behaviorism, post-modernism, and social reconstructonism will provide a basis for the teaching

and learning aspect within my classroom environment. The child will be the focus within my

classroom and I as the teacher will be more assistive in their means of instruction as opposed to

being the authoritative figure.

My classroom will also be experienced based and student driven, so the students will

create their knowledge as well as their answers. I believe that the students need to learn

information that is needed in both the classroom as well as outside the classroom when it comes

to the purpose of education. Exceptionality is a term used by the Department of Education to

identify patterns of strengths and needs common to groups of students. (Department of

Education, 2013, p.1). This will be indicative of one of my goals for my classroom in the means

that I will try to focus on students strengths as well as students needs, so that students feel they

have access to all necessary means and materials.

Keeping my students interests in mind will allow me to keep a set of classroom policies

and disciplinary procedures that are created by them for themselves and allow them to really see

the process and relevance behind the ideas. These procedures however will be mostly supported

by a routine that allows them to walk into my classroom and whether I am there or not they will

know how to begin the day, and be able to complete certain tasks that they know need to be

done. I will have the students create a contract of roughly five overall class rules or procedures

that they think they should follow on a daily basis, because I want my students to be an active

1
part of the classroom. However, in the means of disciplinary procedures I feel that these should

be limited and only implemented in extreme cases so that the students dont become accustomed

to for example not trying on their work so they know they will get sent out of the room where

they wont have to complete it.

The specific rules for my classroom would be very dependent on my students and what

they feel the rules should be because I will have a very student centered classroom but they will

be along the lines of as a team (or as a classroom) we will be respectful of ourselves and others,

be responsible for our own materials, and if we do not follow these rules we will receive a

yellow card, receive a verbal warning, receive a red card, and then we will be asked to move to

the quiet area where we will journal, and they will know what they will have to journal about

because it will be posted within the quiet area within the classroom. The rewards and

consequence system will be very dependent on my class because I do not want the students to

become accustomed to only doing a certain task because they get a reward for doing it. Ideally I

would like to have a reward and consequence system present within my classroom that has a

very interactive element with my students. I think a chart that has red, yellow, green, and gold

star with cards that the students can move themselves will be ideal for my classroom. This

system allows the students to interact and it is visible to them so they know where they stand and

how they can receive a reward versus what wont get them a reward.

With this being said generally my classroom with have desks that are set up in groups for

group work as well as center activities. My students will have access to a bin in the center of

their group that provides different materials in case they dont have one at the table so that they

dont have to return to their cubby and create a distraction (example: highlighters). There will

also be an area that is designated to arts and crafts activities where they will be able to create

2
supplementary lesson materials (ex. salt map), as well as a sensory area where they will be able

to use their five senses for discovery. The arts and crafts area as well as the sensory area will be

utilized when we are completing content based work, and as a reward for students if we have

spare time during the day. A Promethean board or interactive board will be present in the front of

the room for completion of daily activities and reminders, such as what reading groups each of

the kids are in. In front of the Promethean or interactive board I will have a circle rug that we

will use for morning activities and group readings or tasks that we all need to be at the same

level for.

I have to be careful when setting up my classroom though because it has to be enjoyable

but it also has to be effective. I will have various eye-catching displays on the walls as well as in

the classroom to help students interact with one another. Some of these displays will be

permanent for the year while others will be removable and only present for use within a specific

unit. Within my classroom I will have materials that are readily available and have enough for

each student, and if a student is absent I will have a folder hanging on one of the classroom walls

so that they can have access to what they missed. Depending on the age level of the students I

receive I will have a behavior chart on one of the walls within the classroom that they can

interact with so they know where they stand during the day, and on that same wall I will have an

information section that will allow the students to have access to general information about me,

and will allow me to have general information about my students which can be crucial when

creating lesson plans and activities within the classroom. Lastly, on one of the walls I will have

posters containing important information regarding each of the different core subjects and these

will be surrounded by student work, so that they have information that is at their level as well as

information that pertains specifically to the core subject.

3
Curriculum is defined as all of the educational experiences of students that take place

under the auspices of the school (Webb, 2000, p.369). There are several standards that will

influence my classroom setting; I will have to be aware of standards created by the federal,

national, and state governments. It is my duty to prepare my students for mandated assessments

by teaching the correct curriculum. Standardized tests are based off of certain textbooks, so I will

have to be aware of the correlation between textbooks and standardized texts. Being a teacher in

early childhood or childhood education I will implement an integrated curriculum. Using an

integrated curriculum will allow me to teach the subject basics to my students. I believe in

progressivism so I will have a student-centered curriculum, which will focus on the individual.

As a teacher my focus will be on the whole child and I will enforce constructivism. With this

constructivist view I allow my students to see that learning is an active process that includes

depth, and freedom to choose. Accommodating students learning styles and needs is going to be

a key factor within my curriculum. This is key because a curriculum alone is of little value, and

the implementation and effectiveness of teaching curriculum is key. I will think outside of the

box, and use various teaching methods to enhance the curriculum that needs to be taught.

Teaching methods will include class discussion, small group discussion, and multisensory lesson

plans.

Instruction refers to the how do we teach, how do we teach curriculum, the Common

CORE standards, state standards, local standards? The main focus of instruction has to be

allowing the students to gain and understand the content and skills that are being taught. I will

have to un-pack the Common CORE standards and rewrite them into long-term learning targets

(goals). These goals will then turn into educational objectives, which will have to be clearly

defined, observable, measurable, and specific. Instruction relies on a scaffold method, where you

4
start with a foundation and build up to a higher level. There has to be a very defined relationship

between teaching and learning, I have to instruct from all zones. As a teacher I cannot just use

instructional methods from my comfort zone, but rather incorporate lessons that relate to each of

the zones. I have to apply the theory of multiple intelligences, which demonstrates that people

have different strengths and different ways of studying problems. There are eight types of

intelligence that I will have to use within my classroom. I will have to implement visual,

linguistic, logical and mathematical, musical, bodily and kinesthetic, interpersonal, and

intrapersonal intelligence.

I personally believe that the connection between school and home is very important

within the classroom, but I am also aware that it may not be possible within all classrooms

amongst all students. I will attempt to have communication with both my students and the

parents of my students prior to the start of the school year so that students almost feel a little bit

more comfortable and welcomed into the classroom on the first day of school. I will also keep

accurate documentation that demonstrates when, where, and how I contacted certain parents in

regards to their childs success in the classroom so that if they say I havent contacted them I can

provide them with the documentation that says I did. I would have continued home to school

communication with the families in my classroom by having monthly parent nights where

parents can come in and see what the child has been working on for the month based on our unit,

and there will also be activities for the students to do as well. This is also going to be extremely

dependent on my class, so it is hard to say exactly what system I will follow in regards to this.

Lastly, it is important to incorporate all types of parents within the school environment because it

is important to have diverse parents in leadership positions representing all major racial and

ethinic groups served by the school (Hutchins, 2013, p. 4).
