North Sea Gas Lift Optimization
Description:
Gas lift allocation from the process to
petroleum wells.

Business Problem:
Determine optimum gas lift flow from
the process for petroleum gas lift.

Solution:
Aspen HYSYS process model linked
with Schlumbergers Pipesim well
simulation model. The coupled model
resides under an HYSYS neural
network model.

Implementation and Results:

12% increase in platform production
and profits.
The combined HYSYS-Pipesim model
demonstrated the available gains from
integrating petroleum and process
discipline knowledge.

Integrated Modelling Dynamic

Standalone transient hydraulic model predicts stable flow

Standalone model assumes fixed topsides pressure
Real pressure variation may cause unstable flow
An integrated dynamic Pipeline + Facilities model will
Show the potential risk
Allows assessment of mitigation strategies

Standalone transient hydraulic model predicts unstable flow

Integrated model shows impact of instability on facilities
Integrated model allows assessment of control strategies proposed to
cope with instability

Some tips for starting yourself

General
Aspen Hydraulics ALWAYS uses COM Thermo
It will create a default PR COM Thermo fluid package
Except if the current fluid package is already COM Thermo
Preferably make and assign it yourself!

Steady State
Configuration must specify feed flows & back pressure

Dynamics
Beware that anything else than piping MUST have
Pipe upstream of it
Pipe downstream of it

Key Business Benefits

Hydraulics capability inside the HYSYS environment

Familiar interface
Using Aspen HYSYS thermodynamics
Same network model runs in steady state and dynamics

Steady State Modelling

Production scenarios
Gas lift optimisation
Production allocation
Understand the Operational Constraints on the Hydraulic network.
Understand the impact of system pressures on production capacity

Dynamic Modelling
Model the true boundary conditions of the hydraulics system
Integrated model shows impact of instability on facilities
Improvement of control strategies proposed to cope with instability
