LESSON TITLE: SUBJECT AREA: Language Arts/ Letter Identification


Letters in My Name- Apples

GRADE LEVEL: Kindergarten TIME ALLOCATION: 30-40 minutes

OBJECTIVES (with active verbs): When asked by a teacher, Lewis will write/spell his first name with 100%
accuracy in 3 out of 4 trials.

STANDARDS: RF.K.1 Reading Foundational Skills


1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
d. Recognize and name all upper-and lower case letters of the alphabet.

BIG IDEA(S): Lewis is able to identify all the letters in his first name and place in the correct order with 100%
accuracy.

Letters in my name work sheet STUDENT PROFILE (identify special characteristics of
Crayons students relative to lesson)
The book The Skier Lewis disability strongly impacts his access to progress in the
Magnetic letters general education curriculum. Specifically, in reading and
Baking sheet writing. Lewis also struggles with behaviors such as his
Puzzle pieces focus, attention, frustration and work avoidance.

INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL(S) & RATIONALE


This lesson gives the focus learner an opportunity to identify the letters known in his name in other places. The
student will be able to recognize that the letters that make up his name also make up other words and can be
found in other places.
PROCEDURE AND ACTIVITIES (Name teaching strategy for each TIME ALLOCATIONS
activity (cooperative learning, presentation teaching, guided inquiry, etc.)

1. PRE-ACTIVITY: ADVANCE ORGANIZER 10 min


Alphabet Flash Cards. Lewis will identify each letter and the sound it
makes one by one as the teacher hold them up to him.

Transition:
Lewis will earn one i-pad puzzle piece towards his 10 minute I-pad
reward after completion of the alphabet flash card pre-activity.

2. ACTIVITY 10 min
Letter in My Name Apple activity. Lewis will identify the letters in his name
by coloring the apples which contain the letters in his first name L-E-W-I-
S. With help Lewis will read The Skier. After completion we will flip
through each page and Lewis will identify the letters of his name within
the text on each page.

Lewis will earn one i-pad puzzle piece towards his 10 minute I-pad
reward after completion of the alphabet fish game activity.

3. POST ACTIVITY
Provided with a baking sheet and magnetic letters, Lewis will use his
name guide on the sheet to help him use the letter magnets to spell out
his name. He can do this with a mixture of upper and lower case letters.

Lewis will earn one i-pad puzzle piece towards his 10 minute I-pad
reward after completion of the white board activity.
