Humility Disposes Us
to the Coming of the Kingdom
O nce upon a time, there
were two ducks and a frog
living on the same pond. Since
they bumped into each other
every day, the three of them
became the best of friends. But
a long and cruel drought turned
the pond into an arid field.
The ducks decided to fly and
search for another pond but as
they were about to spread their
wings, they remembered that
the frog, their best friend, could
not fly. The two ducks thought
very hard for a way by which
the frog could journey with
them. After a long and tedious
thinking, the ducks came up
with a plan: each of them would
bite an end of a small stick
while the frog would hang on
to it as they would fly. While
they were high up in the air, a
farmer saw the spectacle and
exclaimed: What a brilliant
idea! The one who thought of it
should be a genius. Who could
that be? Hearing the farmers
loud remarks, the frog raised
his hands and said, I did! It was
my idea. And since he raised
his hands in excitement, he let
go of the stick and plummeted
to the hard, arid field.Pride and
an excessive feeling of self-
importance are a prelude to self-
destruction. This is the message
of our readings for this Sunday.
In the Gospel, Jesus reminds
us not to seek places of honor
when we are invited to a
gathering or a banquet. Lest
our host might ask us to go
to a lower place since a more
honorable person should be
occupying the seat where we
are. Rather, we should seek the
lowest place and give our host
the rightful task to honor us
by asking us to sit on a higher
place (Lk 14:7-9). Through this
reminder, the Lord is telling
us that we ourselves should
not give ourselves the honor.
Honor should be in the one
honoring. It is dishonorable
if we are the ones who give
ourselves the honor.
In whatever we do, there
should be an effort towards
breaking free from self-
centeredness because this is
where pride and self-destruction
originate. That is why, after
reminding the guests, Jesus
also reminds the host that when
holding a banquet, he should
invite those who could not
invite him in return (Lk 14:12-
14) lest his action could be
nothing more than self-serving.
But by inviting the poor, the
crippled, the lame and the
blind, the hosts action could
be an authentic self-giving. It
snatches him away from the
debilitating grasp of pride and
self-centeredness.
The First Reading enjoins us
to take the opposite path: the

path of humility (Sir 3:17-18).
Humility allows us to see our
true worth and prevents us from
wallowing in false greatness.
It enables us to accomplish
our tasks and not meddle
in concerns that we are not
capable of doing. Furthermore,
humility disposes us to a life of
service because it gives us the
power to see the importance
of other people no matter
how lowly, how poor, or how
weak they have become. It
also opens us up to listen and
obey God whose will should
be the rule of our lives. Such
will has been expressed in the
form of commandments in
the Law which are received in
fear and with threats of divine
punishment through Moses, but
more perfectly through a new
covenant in Jesus Christ (Heb
12:18-19,22-24) that gives us
direct access to God, makes
us members of the Christian
community, Gods children,
a sanctified people who have
Jesus as mediator to speak for
us.
In other words, by opening
our hearts to a deeper
relationship with one another
a nd w it h G od, hum ilit y
facilitates the coming of the
Kingdom of God into our lives.

been invited to share.

ON A SABBATH Jesus went
to dine at the home of one of
the leading Pharisees, and the
people there were obser ving
him carefully.
He told a parable to those
who had been invited, noticing
how they were choosing the
places of honor at the table.
When you are invited by
someone to a wedding banquet,
do not r ecline at table in
the place of honor. A more
distinguished guest than you
may have been invited by him,
and the host who invited both of
you may approach you and say,
Give your place to this man,
and then you would proceed
with embarrassment to take
the lowest place. Rather, when
you are invited, go and take
the lowest place so that when
the host comes to you he may
say, My friend, move up to
a higher position. Then you
will enjoy the esteem of your
companions at the table. For
every one who exalts himself
will be humbled, but the one
who humbles himself will be
exalted. Then he said to the
host who invited him, When
you hold a lunch or a dinner, do
not invite your friends or your
brothers or your relatives or
your wealthy neighbors, in case
they may invite you back and

Church: Refuge for the Wounded
Continuing his catechesis during the 2015 World Meeting of
Families, Cardinal Tagle described the Church as the home for
wounded hearts. This includes all communities within the Church
(e.g. parish, diocese, religious order, etc.), but most especially, the
family, the home, the domestic church, the church in the family.
The Church of wounded members [all of us are included]
becomes a Church of solidarity and compassion. Not only in
glory, but most especially in wounds. We are one Church, one
home, one family. The Church must embody the redemptive
mission of God.
Cardinal Tagle, quoting Joseph Hartzler, asserts: Nowadays,
the redemptive mission of the Church must be manifested in the
Church becoming disciples of authentic persons, capable of self-
sacrificing love. Tagle believes that it is this type of community
that will prevent alienation, loneliness, and further woundedness.
Self-sacrificing love, practiced daily in imitation of Jesus,
promotes healthy, mature, loving family relationships.
Undoubtedly, such selfless love demands deep faith in Jesus as a
model of genuine self-giving.
