SECTION-A

(a) Explain the principle of carburetion


(b) Differentiate between reciprocating & centrifugal flow compressor.
(c) Mention the various assumptions made in air-standard cycle analysis
(d) Explain the working of thermo-syphon cooling system with neat sketch
(e) State the functions of lubricants in I C engines
(f) Compare Otto, Diesel & Duel cycles on the basis same compression ratio and heat input
(g) What do mean by dissociation?
(h) Define octane number, its importance as SI engine fuel property
(i) What do you mean of supercharging?
(j) What is meant by abnormal combustion?

Note: Attempt any five questions from this section. (In approx. 250 words) (105=50)

Q (2) Compare SI and CI engines with respect to basic cycle, fuel used, introduction of fuel,
ignition, compression ratio, speed, efficiency, weight
Q (3) In an engines working on Diesel cycle inlet pressure and temperature are 1 bar and 17 C
respectively. Pressure at the end of adiabatic compression is 35 bar. The ratio of expansion
after constant pressure heat addition is 5. Calculate the heat addition, heat rejection and the
efficiency of the cycle .Assume =1.4, Cp =1.004 kJ/Kg K and Cv=0.717 kJ/Kg K for air.

Q (4) Describe a Battery ignition system with the help of a sketch.


Q (5) What is ignition delay in case of C.I. Engines? Discuss the variables affecting ignition
delay.
Q (6) Drive optimum pressure ratio for 2 stage minimum work of compression.

Q (8) How is the solid injection system classified? Explain the working of common rail injection
system
Q (9) What are Alternative Fuels for IC engines?

Note: Attempt any two questions from this section. (In approx. 400 words) (152=30)

Q (10) Following data was obtained during trial of two cylinders, 2 stroke engine, Bore 10cm,
stroke 14 cm, speed 1500 rpm, Area of the positive & negative loop are 6 cm2 and negative
loop are 0.25 cm2 respectively. Length of indicator diagram is 6 cm, spring constant of
indicator is 3.8 bar/cm. Net brake load on the dynamometer is 237.5 N brake drum radius is
0.4 m, fuel consumption 4.7 kg/hr, calorific value of fuel 45000 kJ/kg. Find indicated
power, brake power, mechanical and thermal efficiencies

Q (11 ) a) A single stage air compressor is required to deliver 14 m3 of air per minute measured at
1.013 bar and 288 K. The delivery pressure is 7 bar and the speed 300 r.p.m.Take the
clearance volume as 5% of the swept volume with the compression and expansion
index of n=1.3.calculate:
(i) Swept volume of the cylinder
(ii) The delivery temperature
(iii) Indicated power (10)

b) Briefly Explain the following


(i) Time loss factor
(ii) heat loss factor
(iii) exhaust blowdown factor (5)
