SECTION 1 Introduction into Simulation
Year 2
Semester Fall simulation experiences diversify this semester. Students attend full
day simulation labs for the first week of clinical with their clinical teachers where
advanced skills are taught. In addition, students attend the simulation seminars
with their clinical groups where simulation scenarios are utilized to provide
opportunities for students to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving.
Students attend 2-4 simulation seminars. They are given feedback by the
facilitator. These seminars prepare the students for the pre-graduate course and
also provide the students with a variety of clinical situations that they might be
able to participate in based on their clinical placement.

SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING (SDL)
One component of this course includes two (2) hours of online self-directed study on a weekly basis. This is
designed to enhance the students clinical practice. The expectations are that the students will complete the weekly
NSO modules, VCE, SLS and HESI case studies as assigned. Failure to complete the online material will result in
students being presented to CEC, and could possibly result in a grade of UNSAT for the course. These assigned
learning materials will assist students in their practice and can be utilized when the students are in pregrad.
Information on the self-directed modules, case studies, virtual case excursions and SLS can be found in the PN
Program Simulation Passport Manual. The Manual contains the required evaluation forms and outlines the NSO
and SLS work that is required to be completed successfully at the end of the course. You are required to keep this
manual for your entire time in the program. It is used from semester to semester. Your clinical simulation teachers
will be using it individually to complete the Simulation Evaluation forms when you attend simulations. It is also
used to track your attendance.

Process:
Friday at noon all NSO modules, Hesi case study and patient reviews and VCE material will be downloaded
and reviewed. Grades will be emailed to the clinical teachers.
Friday Week 5 if the SDL material is not completed the student will be referred to CEC. The student is at risk
of receiving a grade of UNSAT for midterm. The clinical teachers will be notified of the situation.

material.

1. Self directed material that is assigned is programed to be uploaded to the Evolve grade book.
Grades will be downloaded every Friday at noon, it will be sent to the clinical teachers so that
they may check up on their students progress.

2. Students who have not completed the required material will be presented to the CEC for
outstanding assignments.

3. The Clinical Simulation Coordinator will complete CEC referral form with students name and
details on incomplete work. The completed referral form will be emailed to the Clinical
Education Support Officer.

4. The Clinical Education Support Officer will send the student the completed CEC referral form as
well as the CEC student comment form to complete and return to the Clinical Education Support
Officer.

5. Clinical Simulation Coordinator will attend the CEC meeting to present students with
outstanding assignments for all simulation teachers.

6. CEC will make recommendation based on evidence provided on student performance.

7. The Director, Experiential Learning will send to student, clinical teacher, Clinical Simulation
Coordinator the recommendations from CEC.
a. The recommendations are as follows:
b. Students will have one week to complete missing work.
c. If work is not completed midterm grade will be unsatisfactory.
d. The recommendations will be shared with the Clinical Teacher and Clinical Simulation
Coordinator.
e. The student is made aware of the recommendations.

8. The Clinical Simulation Coordinator will provide names of those that did not complete the
required quizzes by mid-term to CEC.

9. Students whose self directed online work remains incomplete at midterm will receive a grade of
unsatisfactory.

10. The Clinical Teacher will be notified by the Director, Experiential Learning to enter an
unsatisfactory midterm grade.

11. If the self directed online material is not completed by noon Friday of each week the student is
not permitted to attend simulation on the following Monday.
a. Those students not permitted to attend Simulation Lab on Mondays will still need to
attend the SIM lab to pick up and complete the missed clinical assignment.
b. The assignment ensures that the student has the required knowledge but the simulation
hours that are missed are still logged as missed clinical hours.
12. Friday Week 5 if the SDL material is not completed the student will be referred to CEC the
following week by the Simulation teacher. The student is at risk of receiving a grade of UNSAT
for midterm. The clinical teachers will be notified of the situation.

13. Friday Week 13 - The Clinical Simulation Coordinator will complete another CEC referral form
with students name and details on ALL incomplete self directed learning. The completed referral
form will be emailed to the Clinical Education Support Officer.

14. The Clinical Education Support Officer will send the student the completed CEC referral form as
well as the CEC student comment form to complete and return to the Clinical Education Support
Officer.

15. Clinical Simulation Coordinator will attend the CEC meeting to present students with
outstanding assignments.

16. The Director, Experiential Learning will send to student, clinical teacher, Clinical Simulation
Coordinator the recommendations from CEC. If work is not completed a final grade will be
