i Vit ( [j vj t], literally Great Viet) is the
name of Vietnam for two periods from 1054 to 1400,
and again from 1428 until 1804. Beginning with the rule
of L Thnh Tng (r. 10541072), the third emperor
of the L Dynasty until the rule of Gia Long (r. 1802
1820), the rst emperor of the Nguyn Dynasty, it was
the second-longest used name for the country after "Vn
Lang".

Previously, since the rule of inh Tin Hong (r. 968
Hoa L - i C Vit Imperial Capital
979), the country had been referred to ocially as "i
C Vit (wikt: ); c ( ) in the name of Gautama
Buddha ( ). The term Vit is cognate with the
Chinese word "Yue", a name applied in ancient times
to various non-Chinese groups who lived in what is now
southern China and northern Vietnam ; so it means Great
Buddhist Viet. In 1010 L Thi T, founder of the L
Dynasty, moved the capital of i C Vit to Thng Long
(Hanoi) and built the Imperial Citadel of Thng Long
where the Hanoi Citadel later stood.
In 1054, L Thnh Tng - the third L emperor - renamed
the country to i Vit. In 1149 the L dynasty opened
Vn n seaport in the modern north-eastern province of
Qung Ninh for foreign trade.[1]
The Dai Viet successfully stopped attacks by the Khmer
Empire, under Suryavarman II, in 1128, 1132 and 1138.
A nal expedition in 1150 had to withdraw before it could
attack.[2]:160
In 1400, the founder of the H dynasty, H Qu Ly,
changed the countrys name to "i Ngu ( ). In 1407,
Vietnam once fell under Ming dynasty domination, which
lasted until 1427, they renamed the area "Giao Ch". In
1428, L Li, the founder of the L dynasty, liberated
Giao Ch and once again restored the kingdom as "i
Vit.
The name "i Vit came to end when the Nguyn
dynasty took power. The countrys name was ocially
changed yet again, in 1804, this time to Vit Nam ( )
by Gia Long.

The name i Vit was also taken by one of the nation-
alist factions in 1936.[3]
