[SOLVED] Flash Plug-in and CPU bagpuss

Hi, I am a newbie and I would appreciate any advice. I installed Linux Mint Maya 4:05 am

32 bit , about 6 weeks ago, and I am really happy with it overall. I have a HP
mini notebook 110 (1.6 GHz Atom processor, 2 GB RAM). I have a standard
graphic card (Intel IGD x86/MMX/SSE2 ). Recently, I have been noticing that
the cpu usage is over 90% when I play a video in youtube feather beta (and with
normal youtube). I tried several web browsers, no change.
I think its related to the ash plug-in and I followed a few suggestions on the
ubuntu forum which seemed similar to my experience. I uninstalled the Mint
Flash Plug via the Software Manager and then installed Adobe Flash Plugin, this
has made no dierence in fact I found that youtube videos dont play as the ash
plug in crashes. I also see the same issue with Rekonq, Midori, Chrome
browsers. I dont think this issue is related to the low specs of my computer, as
for the rst 4 weeks the system monitor showed that the load on my CPU was
less than 40% when I played youtube videos. Now this is close to 90% I have
not installed any software, in fact, I reinstalled the Linux Mint twice this week.
This did not help.

For now I am going to uninstall Adobe Flash Plugin via the Software Manager,
and re-install the Mint Flash plug-in.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!

Your video display hardware may or may not be better than your CPU but you
may want to try it enabled.

see what gets you better performance. With hardware acceleration enabled, you 6:02 pm
should see lower CPU usage as the video is processed in your video processor. Location: Cambridge,

I see that some Atoms have video onboard the CPU. It's a separate processor
though and using it should drop your CPU usage.

Go to Driver Manager and see if there's a proprietary video driver available for
you. It may improve performance.

Which browsers did you try? I myself have only hit this problem on FireFox with
YT videos, where I have some idea of what is happening.

I considered installing Opera but so far I have not tried it. I used to use Chrome

I dont know how to install the Drivers Manager I followed some instructions I
4:05 am
found on another forum. However still no luck in installing the driver manager via
the terminal. I have listed what I tried and what the output is below the reply. On
the System Details the Graphic Driver is Intel IGD x86/MMX/SSE2. In the
System Resouces, I see CPU 1 and CPU 2 (I am using an Atom processor), so I
assume one of them is the graphic driver?

Thanks once again!

The driver manager should be installed by default...I'm not sure why you can't
see it? Perhaps if there are no proprietary drivers to be found it doesn't get
installed? I'm not sure about Intel drivers - they may only have an open-source
version because they're usually fairly open with Linux.

I have listed what I tried and what the output is below the reply. On the

so I assume one of them is the graphic driver?

No those are the two cores of your CPU. Your GPU wouldn't be listed there. It's
included in the silicon of your Atom chip but actually a separate processor
dedicated to graphics.

These integrated GPUs have varying capabilities - they may or may not be
better than your CPU at playing video, so try enabling or disabling hardware
acceleration and see if it makes a dierence.

Hi, thanks for your suggestion. Under the Menu tab, I have "Addtional Drivers" Posts: 38
Joined: Wed Dec 04, 2013
and it says that except for my wireless card (which is built in) there are no other 4:05 am
additional drivers. So, it is unlikely that I have a separate graphic card.

I played the same video whilst keeping the System Monitor open with the
accelaration disable and enabled. With the accelaration disabled the CPU usage
is lower (by about 12%, video duration was 6 minutes) than with the accelartion
enabled. In fact, the CPU usage appears to be smoother and less erratic with
the accelartion disabled!

Thanks for your help. This is a lot better now.

Well, that thing has an Atom n270, which contains a GMA 950 "graphics", which
is very barebones. (has no accelerators for anything, it only runs the screen and
has some 3D capabilities, everything else has to use the CPU)

I have a relatively better netbook (Atom N455 and GMA 3150), and it still chokes
hard when playing videos at more than 480p from youtube. 720p and HD are a
slideshow.

What quality you were watching videos at? The higher the quality, the higher the

7 di 12 04/02/2017 13:50
[SOLVED] Flash Plug-in and CPU usage - Linux... https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=...

CPU load.

Now, most of that annoyance is because Flash is a piece of trash, because

when I download (with refox extensions) and watch the same exact video with
VLC or whatever other local player, my netbook is perfectly capable of running
720p videos (CPU usage above 60%, but hey, it's uid). The same behavior can
be observed from Windows and Mint. It is also ocially rated to be able to do so.

I warmly recommend using an app called MiniTube (available from Software

Manager), that connects to youtube without using a browser and
downloads/plays the video without using Flash (also does not download/show
most of the nonsense like comments and ads).
It manages to let me play videos up to the max my hardware can hold, which is
720p, with the only drawback that the lowest quality it can operate with is 360p
http://avio.tordini.org/minitube

As for the Flash crashing, I suggest to disable the hardware acceleration, as

your netbook does not support it, and having it enabled on non-compatible
hardware can cause a plugin crash (because of a bug that was never xed
because Adobe discontinued Flash for Linux).

In case disabling hardware acceleration does not help, I refer to this

http://askubuntu.com/questions/161165/f ... f-the-time
Mint 13 is Ubuntu 12.04 with a dierent user interface, so yeah, that should
work.
Posting here the relevant part:

OpensourceFool wrote:

Then, enter the following line exactly as you see here:

Save the le, close gedit, and restart your browser. Hopefully this will resolve
your issue.

This thing tells Flash to stop trying to gure out what graphics you have with the
intent of using it for hardware acceleration (that your graphics does not support
anyway), which triggered a bug that caused a plugin crash on some graphics.

Another possible line to change is

CODE: SELECT ALL

EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1

to
CODE: SELECT ALL

EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=0

Which does more or less the same. (forces it to disable hardware acceleration)

Great! 8:20 am

From its http://avio.tordini.org/minitube/faq

You could be missing some additional packages phonon-backend-gstreamer,

gstreamer-mpeg and gstreamer-plugins-bad, so download them with
Software Manager or run the following in terminal
CODE: SELECT ALL

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-

gstreamer gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad

(will ask your password and then will update package lists, then download/install
those packages if missing, might ask you a conrmation, if it asks to download
hundreds of mb of stu, abort)

The rest of the faq contains more stu, but this is the most common issue.

Interesting what one can learn on a newby forum I've just installed MiniTube
and seems to work ok, although hangs a bit, and crahed once. Think mainly due
to lack of info on how to work it.

On Maya never did have much luck with Software Manager, wait for ages and
nothing ever seemed to happen. Install done in Terminal:
CODE: SELECT ALL

apt install minitube --install-recommends

If this doesn't work for you, then do :

CODE: SELECT ALL

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install minitube

Yeah, it's the only really buggy piece of software in Mint - though it is an
improvement over Ubuntu's version.

apt-get in terminal is the one to use. Synaptic is good as well, but it's just a
graphical front-end for apt-get.

BTW glad to hear your problem is resolved.

Many thanks for the advice on installing minitube. I tried all the suggestions and 4:05 am
the videos would not play at all.
I copied all my personal les and I then installed Linux Mint Nadia Cinnamon 32
bit, and Minitube worked without any issues. Intrestingly, the CPU usage with
ash even when I play high quality videos via youtube does not exceed over 50.
So things are good. Thanks for the tip with disabling the hardware accelaration,
and fxing my mediubuntu update errors and introducing me to MInitube. I have
learnt a great deal. I am very happy with my current version of Linux Mint and
with Minitube.
Thanks once again for all your time and help!!

I have just noticed that the Minitube version that can be downloaded in Linux 4:05 am
Mint 13 is 1.6 (and minitube forum suggests that the issues are related to this
old version). My partner is running Linux Mint 13 x64 bit OS on his laptop, he
cant play or download videos via Minitube. When I installed Linux Mint 14 on my
laptop, the Minitube version I am able to download is 1.9 via the Synaptic
Manager. This might explain why Minitube works in Linux Mint 14 and not in
Linux Mint 13. Simply trying to update the Minitube via the terminal did not work.
I managed to download Minitube version 1.9, and converted the .gz les using
alien to a debian package and ran GDebi package installer. However, we still

Yes, the problem with playing videos via Minitube on Mint 13 Maya was due to 4:05 am

the old version of Minitube 1.6. If it helps the following forum link suggests how
to upgrade the Minitube version for newbies like myself!

Thanks!!

.gz is a compressed archive like the .zip or .rar, not an alien package.
I'm guessing that you did download the source code (the code still written in
human-readable way, before it is converted into a program by compilation) so
you have to compile it before you can make a .deb installer.
It's not hard but it's a bit tedious, and should not be the rst choice nowadays
especially if you are a newcomer.

As a general rule of thumb, rst look around for people that did that already and
placed the updated or backported version in a ppa, that is a unocial repository
your updater can look into when looking for updates. What comes from ppa can
be dangerous or unstable as it's not controlled by Ubuntu mantainers, so be
careful about who's ppa you add.

In the case of Minitube there is a ppa made by the great guys at Webupd8 that
also host other ppas for other updated apps and backports of useful stu. Here
they explain how to add it. http://www.webupd8.org/2013/02/minitube ...
eased.html

/CompilingEasyHowTo is a guide to compile from source. You will need to install
apt-le package for some commands in the guide to work, and at the end
instead of writing the make install you use a tool called Checkinstall that
creates a .deb le you can then use to install the stu easily allowing you also
the ability to remove it cleanly from Synaptic (while with make install there is
stu scattered everywhere and it's a pain to undo, personal experience)
