Glossary Terms 2

The three terms I chose to define were people of color, gender roles, and nuclear family.

There are different reasons why I chose those three terms. I feel that it is important for people to

know these terms because it is something we come across with on daily basis/life.

The reason why I chose to define the term people of color is because I feel that some

people think that people of color are only African Americans, or that might have just been me

who thought that. I when I first heard of that term, I personally thought people of color were only

African Americans. In fact, about 6 months ago I learned that people of color is any person who

is not Caucasian/white. That is the term I presented in class. I shared an illustration I made as

well, of hands with different skin tones, and around the hands I wrote the different

races/ethnicities around the hands. I feel that visuals give a person a clearer picture to understand

what some terms are. That is how I learned about this term.

The second term I chose was gender roles. The first way I presented this term was by

doing another illustration that divides a man from a woman with the definition: A set of norms

dictating the types of behaviors that are considered acceptable/appropriate based on sex. The

second way I presented the term gender roles is by pictures/illustration that determine what

gender roles are. Most of the pictures present how society views gender roles.

As I researched about this term through visual images, I learned society hasnt really changed the

way they view gender roles and people have so much to learn and accept that it is okay to like

things that are not meant for women/man to like or do. This is why I created another collage

that sends this message, along with a picture of the book The Paper Bag Princess by Robert

Munsch which I feel is an excellent book to share that separates gender based stereotypes. The

movie Mulan is also another good gender role movie.

The third term I chose was Nuclear Family. I created a visual that defines what makes a

nuclear family which is a mother, a father, a son, and a daughter, is what makes a nuclear family.

In the visual it shows the connections of what makes a nuclear family.

Another way I chose to define the word nuclear family is by more pictures and books. I really

liked the book This Is My Family by Gina and Mercer Mayer because I feel this book is a

perfect example that illustrates what a nuclear family is through pictures and words. I also

created another college that displays what a nuclear family is.

I learned that I learn better through illustrations and it is easier for me to present the terms

I used through pictures. I learn best by seeing what something means through pictures and

examples and feel that some people will have a better understanding of these term when they see

through their eyes. The books I chose to include in my collages I have read to my kids in the

classroom and doing this assignment made me realize how I can link those books to both of the

terms that I used.
