BOOK 1 - GENESIS [IN THE BEGINNING, ORIGINS] 50 chapters

CHAPTER 1 (31 verses)

1-26 Creations of the heavens and earth by God in six days.


27-31 Creation of man and sustenance for him.

CHAPETR 2 (25 verses)

1-6 After the completion of creation God made the seventh day sacred
(Sabbath).
7 Adam is created from dust
8-14 Description of Eden and some rivers.
15-17 Adam is put in Eden and commanded to eat freely, while forbidden
to eat from the Tree of Knowledge for it will cause his death.
18-20 God created animals and allowed Adam to give them names.
21-25 Creation of Eve from Adams rib

CHAPTER 3 (24 verses)

1 The serpent appears and asks why the prohibition of any tree
2-3 Eve explains the Tree will cause death
4-6 They are told that they wont die, so they eat and their nakedness
becomes apparent
7-20 They make aprons from sewn fig leaves and hide from God, God
curses all three
21 God made coats of animal skins for them as clothes
22-24 Adam and Eve are expelled from Eden

CHAPTER 4 (26 verses)

1-2 Eve gives birth to Cain and Abel.


3-7 Cain and Able make offerings to God and Cains is not accepted.
8-16 Cain kills Abel and goes to the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17-24 List of Cains offspring.
25-26 Eve gives birth to Seth.

CHAPTER 5 (32 verses)

1-5 Adam lived for 930 years.


6-8 Seth fathered many sons and daughters and died aged 912.
9-28 Names of the offspring of Seth and how long they lived.
29-31 Seth great grandsons grandson was Noah
32 Noah was 500 years old when he became father of Shem, Ham and
Japheth.

CHAPTER 6 (22 verses)

1-4 Men began to multiply


5-12 Men did evil and corrupted the earth, Noah was blameless.
13-22 God commanded Noah to build a ship and gave him instructions.
CHAPTER 7 (24 verses)

1-24 Description of the Flood

CHAPTER 8 (22 verses)

1-14 The receding of the waters


15-22 Noah and his family leave the ship

CHAPTER 9 (29 verses)

1-17 The Covenant of God with Noah.


18-19 The sons of Noah repopulate the whole earth.
20-27 Noah gets drunk and curses his son Canaan.
28-29 Noah lived up to 950 years.

CHAPTER 10 (32 verses)

1-32 The families of the sons of Noah and their generations, according to
their nations.

CHAPTER 11 (32 verses)

1-5 The people have one language and they start building a city and the
Tower of Babel.
6-9 God causes people to become scattered and they begin to speak
different languages
10-28 Generations after Shem to Abram.
29-32 Abram marries Sarai, childless they go to Canaan then Haran.

CHAPTER 12 (20 verses)

1- 10 Abram is blessed as a great nation. Abram travels with Sarai his


paternal nephew Lot. They go to Canaan and finally to Egypt due to a
famine.
11-17 The Pharaoh is afflicted with great plagues when he tries to
approach Sarai.
18-20 The Pharaoh learns about Sarais reality and orders the Egyptians
concerning them.

CHAPTER 13 (18 verses)

1-10 Abram and Lot separate due to their strife with their herdsmen.
11-12 Lot goes to Jordan, away from the city of Sodom. Abram goes to
Canaan.
13-18 God promises Abram that he will have a lot of offspring who will
have these lands.

CHAPTER 14 (24 verses)


1-12 Abram's nephew Lot is captured in the battle of the kings of
Chedorlaomer
13-16 Lot is rescued by Abram.
17-24 Abram meets Melchizedek who offers him bread and wine,
Melchizedek blesses Abram, Abram pays tithes to Melchizedek, Abram
refuses the spoils of war.

CHAPTER 15 (21 verses)

1-5 Abram is promised an heir and his offspring will be like the numbers of
the stars.
6-11 The Blood Covenant of God
12-21 Abram sees in a dream the future of his offspring as slaves and after
four generations they will escape Egypt with great prosperity and will
inherit the land of Canaan.

CHAPTER 16 (16 verses)

1-2 Sarai is childless, therefore she tells Abram to marry her slave Hagar
and have children.
3-7 When Hagar conceived, Sarai resented her for it. Hagar fled due to ill
treatment.
8-9 Hagar is commanded to return to Sarai and submit herself.
10-15 Hagar is promised a lot of offspring and her son was given the name
Ishmael.
16 Abram was 86 years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.

CHAPTER 17 (27 verses)

1-4 Abram is given a Covenant, he will be the father of a multitude of


nations.
5 Abrams name is changed to Abraham.
6-14 The covenant and circumcision regulations.
15-16 Sarais name is changed to Sarah and she is blessed with a son.
17 Abraham is quizzical about a son due to his wife being 90 years old and
himself 100.
18-22 Sarah will give birth to a boy named Isaac who shall have the
everlasting covenant.
23-26 Abraham was 99 years old and Ishmael was 13 when they were
circumcised.
27 All the men and slaves were circumcised too.

CHAPTER 18 (33 verses)

1-8 The three visitors at Mamre.


9-10 The Lord reveals they will bear a son.
11-15 Sarah laughs and denies laughing, she is reminded nothing is
difficult for God.
16-33 The Lord reveals His plans to destroy Sodom for their sins are very
grevious.
Abraham intercedes for Sodom and God promises not to destroy them if
there even ten righteous people therein.

CHAPTER 19 (38 verses)

1-3 The two angels visit Lot.


4-11 The wicked men of Sodom misbehave with Lot.
12-23 Lot is protected and Flees to Zoar
24-25 The Lord rained fire and brimstone.
26 Lot's wife looks back and is turned into a salt pillar.
27-29 Abraham Sees the Smoke of Destruction.
30-38 Lot's daughters and the Moabites.

CHAPTER 20 (18 verses)

1 Abraham Sojourns in Gerar.


2 Abraham tells the king of Gerar that Sarah is his sister who takes her.
3-4 King Abimelech has a dream wherein he is told that Sarah is
Abrahams wife.
5-13 Abimelech confronts Abraham and the latter eveals his fear.
14-16 Abimelech restores Sarah to Abraham.
17-18 Abraham prays for Abimelech.

CHAPTER 21 (34 verses)

1-8 Isaac is born and circumcised on the eight day, Abraham was 100
years old.
9-10 Sarah saw Hagar mocking Isaac and demanded her to be banished.
11-12 Abraham is upset over them and God confirms Isaac's blessing to
Abraham.
13 God confirms Ishmael will be a Nation.
14 Abraham casts Hagar and Ishmael out.
14-19 Hagar panics when she runs out of water and God promises her son
will be a nation.
20-21 Upbringing of Ishmael.
22-32 Abraham and Abimelech make a Covenant after his servants
misappropriate with Hagars water well.
33 Abraham plants a grove in Beersheba.
34 Abraham sojourns in Philistia.

CHAPTER 22 (24 verses)

1-10 God tests Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac and he obeys.
11-18 God becomes pleased with Abrahams obedience and gives him a
ram to sacrifice instead of his son.
19 Abraham dwelt in Beersheba.
20-24 Abraham's brother Nahor bares children.

CHAPTER 23 (20 verses)

1-2 Sarah dies aged 127 in the land of Canaan.


3-20 Abraham purchases the Cave of Machpelah for the burial of Sarah.
CHAPTER 24 (67 verses)

1-14 Abraham sends his servant to get a wife for his son Isaac.
15-28 Rebekah meets the servant and invites him to her home.
29-33 Laban, brother of Rebekah, entertains him.
34-49 The servant tells of his errand.
50-61 The servant takes Rebekah as wife of Ishmael.
62-67 Isaac meets Rebekah and get married.

CHAPTER 25 (34 verses)

1-4 The sons of Abraham by Keturah.


5-11 Abraham divides his goods. He dies at the age of 175. He is buried
with his wife Sarah.
12-18 The generations of Ishmael. He dies at the age of 137.
19-26 Isaac prays for Rebekah and she gives birth to Esau and Jacob as a
result.
27-28 Esau was a skilful hunter and Jacob a quiet man living in tents.
29-34 Esau sells his birthright to Jacob due to hunger, later despises his
birth right.

CHAPTER 26 (35 verses)

1-6 Isaac lived in Gerar and told not to go to Egypt due to the famine.
7-15 Isaac tells the king that Rebekah is his sister fearing that they will kill
him if he told them the truth, Isaac sows the land and is blessed with
much possessions.
16-17 The king sees the prosperity of Isaac and commands him to depart
their land.
18-25 Isaac discovers a water well then builds an altar.
26-31 The king takes an oath not to harm Isaac, they have a feast.
32-33 Water is found and the city is named Beershebah.
34-35 Esau son of Isaac marries Judith aged 40, his parents are distressed
by this marriage.

CHAPTER 27 (46 verses)

1-5 Isaac sends Esau for venison.


6-14 Jacob is instructed by his mother Rebekah to bring venison before
Esau can.
15-30 Jacob obtains the blessing by bringing the venison and pretending
to be Esau.
30-40 Esau complains and by importunity he obtains a blessing.
41-42 Esau threatens Jacob's life, Rebekah warns Jacob about Esau plan to
kill him.
43-46 Rebekah sends Jacob to Laban until the anger of Esau subsides.

CHAPTER 28 (22 verses)

1-8 Isaac blesses Jacob and sends him to Paddan Aram to get married.
9 Esau marries the daughter of Ishmael.
10-22 Details of the vision of Jacob's ladder.

CHAPTER 29 (35 verses)

1-8 Jacob comes to the well of Haran.


9-14 Jacob meets Rachel and is entertained by Laban.
15-22 Labans pact with Jacob for Rachels hand in marriage.
23-27 Jacob is deceived by receiving Leah instead.
28-30 Jacob marries Rachel also, and serves for her seven years more.
31-35 God favours Leah with children despite Jacobs love for Rachel.

CHAPTER 30 (43 verses)

1-24 Details of the children of Jacob and Rachel gives birth to Joseph.
25-26 Jacob desires to depart.
27-36 Laban keeps him there on a new covenant.
37-43 God blesses Jacob whereby he became rich.

CHAPTER 31 (55 verses)

1-18 Jacob departs secretly from Laban.


19-24 Rachel steals her father's images and Laban pursues after Jacob.
25-43 Laban complains of the wrong after catching them up, and Rachel
hide the images.
44-55 The covenant of Laban and Jacob, they both return to their lands.

CHAPTER 32 (32 verses)

1-2 Jacob sees angels of God at Mahanaim.


3-23 Jacob's message to Esau for peace. He prays for deliverance.
24-26 He wrestles with an angel at Peniel.
27-29 Jacob's name is changed to Israel.
30-32 Jacobs God face to face and names the place Peniel.

CHAPTER 33 (20 verses)

1-16 Jacob and Esau meet and Esau has forgives Jacob and they reconcile.
17-20 Jacob comes to Succoth. At Shalem Jacob buys a field and builds an
altar.

CHAPTER 34 (31 verses)

1-7 Dinah daughter of Leah and Jacob is defiled by Shechem.


8-14 Shechem entreats to marry Dinah.
15-19 The sons of Jacob offer the condition of circumcision to the
Shechemites.
20-24 Hamor and Shechem persuade them to accept it.
25-31 The sons of Jacob slay them while they are weak and plunder the
city.

CHAPTER 35 (29 verses)


1-7 God sends Jacob to Bethel to make an altar.
8 Deborah, Rebekahs nurse dies.
9-15 God blesses Jacob at Bethel and where God spoke to him he builds a
pillar.
16-21 Rachel dies in child birth, her last son Benjamin.
22-26 Details of the sons of Jacob.
27 Jacob comes to Isaac and the latter dies at the age of 180.

CHAPTER 36 (43 verses)

1-43 The generations of Esau and their chiefs and settlements, Esau the
father of the Edomites.

CHAPTER 37 (36 verses)

1-4 Joseph is hated by his brethren.


5-12 Joseph has two dreams.
13-17 Jacob sends him to visit his brethren.
18-22 Joseph's brethren conspire to slay him and Reuben saves him.
23- 30 They sell him to the Ishmaelites.
31-35 His father, deceived by the bloody coat, mourns for him.
36 Joseph is sold to Potiphar in Egypt.

CHAPTER 38 (30 verses)

1-30 Details of the descendants of Judah the son of Leah.

CHAPTER 39 (23 verses)

1-23 Joseph prospered because the Lord was with him, Joseph becomes
the ruler of Potiphar's house, Joseph resists Potiphar's wife, Joseph is
falsely accused, Joseph is cast into prison, Joseph is made keeper of the
prison.

CHAPTER 40 (23 verses)

1-22 Joseph interprets the dreams of Pharaoh's chief butler and chief
baker who are imprisoned with him, the dreams came to pass, the baker is
hanged and cup bearer is freed.
23 The cup bearer forgets Joseph.

CHAPTER 41 (57 verses)

1-24 Pharaoh's two dreams.


25-44 Joseph interprets the dreams, his interpretation reveals seven years
of plenty and seven years of famine, he proposes a solution of grain
storage throughout the famine, Pharaoh applauds him and makes him
governor of all Egypt.
45-49 Joseph marries an Egyptian named Asenath, Joseph gathers grain as
the sand upon the seashore, Asenath bears two children Ephraim and
Manasseh
50-52 The birth of Manasseh and Ephraim.
53-57 The famine begins.

CHAPTER 42 (38 verses)

1-8 Jacob sends his ten sons to buy corn in Egypt, Joseph recognises them
but they dont.
9-20 They are imprisoned by Joseph as spies. But are freed, on one
condition that they bring Benjamin.
21-24 Their remorse on account of what they did to Joseph and Simeon is
kept as a pledge.
25-38 They return home with corn, and with their money. Jacob refuses to
send Benjamin.

CHAPTER 43 (34 verses)

1-34 Jacob is persuaded to send Benjamin to Egypt due to severe famine ,


Joseph's brethren bow down to him, They all eat and drink together in
Egypt.

CHAPTER 44 (34 verses)

1-34 Joseph arranges to prevent the return of his brothers to Canaan by


putting a silver cup in Benjamins sack, Judah offers himself in place of
Benjamin for their father's sake.

CHAPTER 45 (28 verses)

1-28 Joseph makes himself known to his brethren, all the brothers rejoice
together, Pharaoh invites Jacob and his family to dwell in Egypt, and to eat
the food of the land.

CHAPTER 46 (34 verses)

1-34 The Lord send Jacob and his family of 70 to Egypt, The generations
of Jacob are set forth, Joseph meets Jacob. Joseph instructs his brethren
how to answer to Pharaoh.

CHAPTER 47 (31 verses)

1-6 Joseph presents five of his brethren to Pharaoh.


7-10 Pharaoh meets Jacob who blesses him.
11-12 Joseph gives his family land and food.
13-21 Joseph obtains all the Egyptians money, their cattle and their lands,
for Pharaoh.
22 The priests' land was not bought.
23-26 Joseph lets out the land for a fifth part.
27-31 Jacob's was 147 years old when he oath from Joseph to bury him
with his fathers.

CHAPTER 48 (22 verses)

1-22 Jacob tells of the appearance of God to him in Luz, Jacob adopts
Ephraim and Manasseh as his own children, Jacob blesses Joseph, Jacob
puts Ephraim before Manasseh, The seed of Ephraim shall become a
multitude of nations, the children of Israel shall return to Canaan, the land
of their fathers.

CHAPTER 49 (33 verses)

1-28 Jacob calls his sons before him and foretells what will befall them all.
29-30 Jacob gives command to be buried with his fathers in the land of
Canaan.
31-33 Jacob dies and is gathered unto his people.

CHAPTER 50 (26 verses)

1-26 Jacob's body is embalmed, Joseph buries Jacob in the land of Canaan,
Joseph comforts his brethren. The children of Israel multiply, Joseph
promises that the Lord will bring Israel out of Egypt into the land of
Canaan, Joseph dies aged 110 in Egypt and is embalmed.
