SCOPE OF DESIGN REPORT

This design report consists of the design of Clear Water Reservoir at Kalindi Kunj being
constructed as part of the project Integration of Water Supply Scheme in Line 7 and Line 8.

Excel sheets have been used for design of components walls and foundations based on
Limit State Design as per provisions of IS 456 -2000 and IS 3370 - 2009 (Part 2).

Given data as per tender document is as given below:

Safe Bearing capacity : 79.2 kN/m2

Finished ground level : 204.00 m
Natural ground level : 198.00 m
Ground water table : 196.00 m

Page 1
DESIGN BASIS

Concrete grade: M 30

Steel grade: Fe 500

Density of Concrete = 25 kN/m3

Minimum clear cover to concrete elements:

Surfaces in contact with water : 45 mm

Surfaces not in contact with water

Slabs : 20 mm

Walls : 30 Mm

Beams : 30 mm

Columns : 40 mm

Foundations : 50 mm

Water retaining structures have been designed on Limit State design as per clause 4.4 of
IS 3370 2009 (Part 2). It states that the maximum calculated surface width of cracks for
direct tension and flexure shall not exceed 0.2 mm with specified cover. Crack widths have
been calculated as per the methods given in Annexure B of IS 3370 2009 (Part 2).

Surcharge Load for Fire Tender

It was intimated that surcharge load for fire tender shall be taken for the design of walls.
As per clause 214.1 of IRC 06 2014, surcharge equivalent to 1.2 m of earth fill shall be
considered for the structures designed to retail earth like abutments, return walls, etc. This is
applicable for highways. (Page attached)

As per Appendix G of Singapore Civil Defense Code (Pages attached), a surcharge of 10

kN/sqm is sufficient for a vehicle having gross weight equal to 30 Ton.

As per IS 6067 1983 (Functional requirements for Water Tender for Fire Brigade use),
gross vehicle weight of Fire Tender is 15 Ton including weight of crew, water and equipment
(Page attached)

Considering the above, surcharge of 0.8 m of equivalent earth fill (= 18 x 0.8 = 14.4 kN/sqm)
has been considered in design.

Page 2
IRC:6-2014
212.5 The overturning effect of the centrifugal force on the structure as a whole shall also

be duly considered.

213 BUOYANCY
213.1 In the design of abutments, especially those of submersible bridges, the effects of
buoyancy shall also be considered assuming that the fill behind the abutments has been
removed by scour.

213.2 To allow for full buoyancy, a reduction shall be made in the gross weight of the
member affected by reducing its density by the density of the displaced water.

Note: 1 )The density of water may be taken as 1 .0 t/m^

2) For artesian condition, HFL or actual water head, whichever is higher, shall be
considered for calculating the uplift.

213.3 In the design of submerged masonry or concrete structures, the buoyancy effect
through pore pressure may be limited to 15 percent of full buoyancy.

213.4 In case of submersible bridges, the full buoyancy effect on the superstructure shall
be taken into consideration.

214 EARTH PRESSURE

214.1 Structures designed to retain earth fills be proportioned to withstand pressure
shall
calculated in accordance with any rational theory. Coulomb's theory shall be acceptable,
subject to the modification that the centre of pressure exerted by the backfill, when considered
dry, is located at an elevation of 0.42 of the height of the wall above the base instead of 0.33
of that height. No structures shall, however, be designed to withstand a horizontal pressure
less than that exerted by a fluid weighing 480 kg/m^ All abutments and return walls shall be
designed for a live load surcharge equivalent to 1 .2 m earth fill.

214.2 Reinforced concrete approach slab with 12 mm dia 150 mm c/c in each direction
both at top and bottom as reinforcement in M30 grade concrete covering the entire width of
the roadway, with one end resting on the structure designed to retain earth and extending for
a length of not less than 3.5 m into the approach shall be provided.

214.3 All designs shall provide for the thorough drainage of backfilling materials by means
of weep holes and crushed rock or gravel drains, or pipe drains, or perforated drains.

214.4 The pressure of submerged soils (not provided with drainage arrangements) shall
be considered as made up of two components:

a) Pressure due to the earth calculated in accordance with the method laid down
in Clause 214.1 the , unit weight of earth being reduced for buoyancy, and

b) Full hydrostatic pressure of water

Structural Loading of Fire Engine on Accessway

The following information will assist structural engineers in

the design of accessway.

(i) In general, the minimum width of the accessway shall be Accessway sizes
6m wide and the minimum length shall be 15m long.
Diagram A shows the relationship between the
accessway and parked fire engine with its front and rear
jacks extended

(ii) Accessway shall be on Accessway

loading
(a) suspended slabs, or
(b) on metalled or paved ground, or
(c) ground laid with strengthened perforated slabs or
(d) approved materials

to withstand the loading requirements of fire engine.

(iii) The accessway required to serve building shall be

constructed to sustain the load of a 30 tonnes fire
engine. The wheel load shall be considered separately
with the jack loads for both global and local effects.

(iv) Axles load for accessway shall be as follows : Axles load

Front Axle 7500kg 2 wheels

Rear Axle 21,000kg 8 wheels

(v) The jack load shall be assumed to be uniformly

distributed over a rectangular contact area of 923 cm
for both local and global analysis.

(v) The maximum pressure on one jack, even in the worst

case, will not exceed 80N/cm.

(vi) In the absence of more exact calculations, live load

surcharge for accessway on suitable material properly
consolidated may be assumed to be at least 10KN/m.

Soil Bearing Capacity & Provision of Piles
As per the soil report, net soil bearing capacity at 1.0 m depth below NGL has been taken as
79.2 kN/sqm.

Accordingly, Gross Bearing Capacity has been taken as = 79.2 + 10 x 1 = 89.2 kN/sqm

Since pressure under the walls is exceeding the gross bearing capacity of soil, it was decided
to provide the piles.

Capacity of piles = 16 Ton = 160 kN (Refer next section for detailed calculations)

Total width of footing = 3.9 m (Wall W1) and 4.7 m (Wall W2)
Centre to center spacing of piles = 3.2 m
Effective area of two piles = 3.9 m x 3.2 m / 4.7 m x 3.2 m

Load on effective area for wall W1 = 0.5 x (72.25 + 153.6) x 3.9 x 3.2 = 1409.3 kN
(Refer design of footing for Wall W1 for pressures)
Load carried by piles = 160 x 2 = 320 kN
Balance load on earth = 1409.3 320 = 1089.3 kN
Effective pressure on earth = 1089.3 / 3.9 / 3.2 = 87.3 kN/sqm < Gross SBC 89.2 kN/sqm
Hence OK.

Load on effective area for wall W2 = 0.5 x (101.67 + 97.26) x 4.7x 3.2 = 1496.0 kN
(Refer design of footing for Wall W2 for pressures)
Load carried by piles = 160 x 2 = 320 kN
Balance load on earth = 1496.0 320 = 1176.0 kN
Effective pressure on earth = 1176.0 / 4.7 / 3.2 = 78.2 kN/sqm < Gross SBC 89.2 kN/sqm
Hence OK.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY

List of abbreviations along with units:

fck = characteristic cube compressive strength of concrete (N/mm2)
fy = Characteristic strength of steel (N/mm2)
m = modular ratio
a = Height of fill (m)
b = Length of wall (m)
c = Clear cover to reinforcement (mm)
= Dia of bar (assumed in mm)
c' = Nominal cover to reinforcement (mm)
w = Design surface crack width (mm)
s = maximum spacing between adjoining bars (assumed in mm)
cr = maximum spacing of tensile bar from outer edge of concrete (assumed in mm)
k = coefficient of active pressure
k = modified coefficient of active pressure of adjoining wall w.r.t. height of present
wall
= Density of fill (KN/m3)

2.0 Steps followed in design:

1. Calculate the ratio of length of wall (b) and height of fill (a)
2. Depending upon the ratio b/a, we see whether the wall is Cantilever (b/a > 3), Three
Edges Fixed (0.5 < b/a < 3) or Horizontal Spanning Wall (b/a < 0.5).
3. Then b/a for both the fills is equalized so to get moment values at same fraction of
height due to Fill 1 and Fill 2. This helps to compare the calculated reinforcement for
Case 1 (Fill 1 acting; Fill 2 not acting) and Case 2 (Fill 1 acting; Fill 2 not acting) on
both the fills.
4. Vertical moments :
4.1. Coefficient for vertical moment as per IS code.
i. For cantilever wall, the coefficients at different heights are worked out
by the formula wH3/6.
ii. For horizontal spanning wall, bottom h = H/4 or 1 m (whichever is
greater) is designed to act as cantilever and balance height is
designed as horizontal spanning.
iii. For three edges fixed wall, the coefficients are taken from IS 3370
Part IV.

Page 11
4.2. These coefficients are then multiplied by multiplier. Multiplier = k x x H3
for cantilever and three edges fixed wall and k x x H x h2 for horizontal
spanning wall.
4.3. The multiplier is multiplied with coefficient to calculate the vertical bending
moment.
4.4. Additional moments due to walkway etc. are added to the vertical
moments.
4.5. Then it is checked whether any direct tension due to suspended slab
bottom is there or not. If yes, then modified vertical moments are
calculated.
4.6. Reinforcement is calculated for modified moments and direct tension.
Calculated reinforcement is compared with minimum reinforcement as per
IS 3370-2009.
5. Horizontal moments :
5.1. Coefficient for horizontal moment as per IS code
i. For cantilever wall, coefficients = 0.
ii. For horizontal spanning wall, coefficient = 1/12 at edge and 1/16 at
mid span.
iii. For three edges fixed wall, the coefficients are taken from IS 3370
Part IV.
5.2. These coefficients are then multiplied by multiplier. Multiplier = k x x H3
for three edges fixed and horizontal spanning wall and 0 for cantilever wall.

5.3. The multiplier is multiplied with coefficient to calculate the horizontal

bending moment at the edge and middle of span.
5.4. If there is any adjoining wall, then redistribution of horizontal moments at
edge is done between the two walls based on their moments and their
relative stiffness. Moments at the middle of the span are also corrected as
per the redistribution of moments. Redistribution of moments is optional.
5.5. Redistributed moments are further modified for any direct tension due to
adjoining wall.
5.6. Reinforcement is calculated for modified moments and direct tension at the
edge and for middle span moments. Calculated reinforcement is compared
with minimum reinforcement as per IS 3370-2009.
6. Limit State design for vertical as well as horizontal moments :
6.1. Limit state design is done for both horizontal as well as vertical moments
As per IS 3370 Part 2 - 2009, Annexure B,

Page 12
6.2. Reinforcement and thickness are assumed and crack width is calculated to
be less than permissible crack width. Stress in reinforcement is limited to
0.8 fy.
