In what ways are people today attempting to provide necessary

solutions to the problem of resegregation?

I am an undocumented immigrant, there are many other students or individuals like me

who came to this country when we were young, given no choice. America is all we know, this is

home to us just like it is to natural-born U.S. citizens. There are people out there that have

committed crimes but I, just like many other undocumented Americans, are here to make a future

for ourselves and our families, not to cause harm anyone. Living through Donald Trumps

presidency, one can see the true colors of America. The racism is emerging from the shadows and

showing its face. It scares the people of color in this country, it isolates them and dehumanizes

them . What has our country come to? Kids are losing their families, families are being broken

apart, people are being sent to deportation camps. We have not progressed as a country. All thes

fighting Dr. King, Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, etc. did for the civil rights movement was for

nothing. We can see that re-segregation is happening right before our eyes and faster than ever.

Re-segregation means we have gone back 80 years and have not morally, or socially progressed

into accepting and loving one another. Some of the causes of re-segregation are a lack of

knowledge towards peoples rights, not embracing diversity, and a lack of people of color in

high-status jobs. Re-segregation allows for white America to stay predominantly white while

placing all the people of color in an area away from them. UndocuMedia is an organization that

has been helping the American society to abolish re-segregation by making it more diverse,

educated, and accepting of people of color in higher roles in society.

People of color have faced racism, stereotypes, fear-mongering, and gentrification. With

The injustices people of color, specifically undocumented people face, are fought everyday and

we lose the value of diversity when we see undocumented people and turn the other cheek when
we see them struggling. An organization that helps undocumented people in the U.S. is

UndocuMedia. UndocuMedia is an organization that helps undocumented immigrants by

informing them on DACA (Dream Ace for Childhood Arrivals) that allows those that came to the

U.S. as a child before the year of 2012 to stay in the U.S. temporarily for two years as long as

they do not commit any crimes, attend school or have a job. Along with informing them about

DACA, it suggests to them if they should or if they shouldnt file for DACA. If one does apply

for DACA they will have to pay a 495 dollar fee and submit legal documents to determine their

eligibility for the act. If they are able to apply for DACA and get accepted, they will be able to

legally work and stay in the U.S. for undocumented immigrants with families, this helps to bring

in money to be able to provide for their family and their needs. If they get accepted, immigrants

will also have a shot at getting higher education. DACA allows undocumented immigrants to

reside in the U.S. as long as they are attending school, by attending school they are gaining more

knowledge and fighting to get degrees. By going to school and pursuing a higher education, they

are able to get jobs that are in higher social-status. This puts into play the effect this has on

younger students, by seeing someone of color, that may or may not be undocumented, a student

of color that may or may not be undocumented is able to set a goal to make this their reality. The

organization also informs undocumented immigrants on their right by telling them what to do if

they ever have an encounter with ICE police. This is important to know because as they being

informed, they slowly start to erase that fear of what will happen to them because they will be

able to defend themselves and understand what their rights are as immigrants.

A main thing that UndocuMedia focuses on is getting undocumented immigrants their rights, on

their website they state, But no matter who is president, everyone living in the U.S. has certain

basic rights under the U.S. Constitutioneveryone, including undocumented people. Everyone
has rights, even undocumented people, they may not be the same ones as natural-born citizens

but we still face injustices everyday. UndocuMedia is fighting for undocumented immigrants

rights by making the undocumented community aware of their rights and what they can do to

legally reside in the U.S. Everyone has rights, even undocumented people, they may not be the

same ones as natural-born citizens but we still face injustices everyday.

Since many undocumented have fear to the unknown , they are taken away from their

families, when deported, and sent to a deportation camp where they are being separated from

their families. Families get torn apart, a source of income may have been lost as well, leaving the

family to struggle to make ends meet. However, to prevent this from happening, UndocuMedia

helps undocumented immigrants with this by helping them be aware of their rights. On their

website, they address families on what to do if an ICE agent or police is there claiming to take an

undocumented person and arrest them. The website helps them to identify if the paper they have

is legit and from a judge. Also, by not knowing our rights, we create more fear within ourselves

because we do not know what we are allowed to do and what we arent (legally) so we then just

follow any orders of the authoritative figure.

Why is this cause/effect being addressed? In other words, what are some
potential, positive impacts that this particular solution can have in order to
address this cause/effect of segregation?
Families will stay together, can possibly teach other undocumented immigrants in their
community and be aware of their rights so they are not fearful of the unknown.

Opposition to illegal immigration "has become so toxic that any time a

practical proposal is put forward, it is shot down before it can even be weighed on its
merits," Mr. Spitzer said. "The consequence of this fear-mongering is paralysis." That
fear-mongering is spreading. From Lou Dobbs on CNN to the Republican presidential
candidates debates (with Senator John McCain the sole exception), illegal immigrants
are being targeted as threats to national security and the jobs of native-born
Americans. (ibbitson)
Cause/Effect (B) Addressed by Solution A: Not knowing if they should or not knowing about
DACA
What cause or effect of resegregation is this particular solution trying to
address?
if they are not legally here, they can be deported and leave society with less diversity

Why is this cause/effect being addressed? In other words, what are some
potential, positive impacts that this particular solution can have in order to
address this cause/effect of segregation?
-If they are able to apply for DACA, they are able to legally stay here,
temporarily, and provide for their family or perhaps get an education that can
lead to people of color in higher positions kids start to see themselves in
these positions as well.

At the same time, immigrant parents are often quite dependent

upon their children. The children may develop language skills more quickly than
their parents and consequently serve as interpreters and errand-runners for the
family. Alternating between parentifying the children and, at the same time,
severely constricting their activities and contacts, may create significant tensions
within the family.

Cause/Effect (C) Addressed by Solution A:Less people of color being in higher roles.
What cause or effect of resegregation is this particular solution trying to
address?
Cause: Lack of schooling or role models of color in higher positions
Effect: Children do not see themselves in those positions and lack time with their
parents because their parents are working at a low paying job since they can not be too
picky

Many immigrant parents (particularly those coming from poorer

families) work in several jobs. These multiple obligations lead them to be
relatively unavailable to their children immigrant parents are often unable to
attend school functions: as a result, educators lament the perceived lack of interest
in their childrens education...leave immigrant children to their own devices long
before it is developmentally appropriate, While in some cases this leads to hyper-
responsible children, in other cases it leads to depressed children who are drawn
to the lure of alternative family structures such as gangs (199)
Why is this cause/effect being addressed? In other words, what are some
potential, positive impacts that this particular solution can have in order to
address this cause/effect of segregation?
There can be more people of color in higher positions and in cities that represent and
give a voice to people of color. This will also create diversity that will help others learn
and become familiar with others from different backgrounds and not be prejudice.

Conclusion
Why this matters and who should care.
Why does it matter? Why should this issue of living in a resegregated United
States matter to your own community? At least, what is the value of your community
having an awareness of this issue?
When we live in resegregation, we are limiting our mind and our
potential because we are not learning from others and creating. WIth different
background and cultures, new ideas and things happen that one may not
experience with the average joe. We get diversity and a richness of ideas and
sharing or cultures that allow us to work together and create amazing things. In
our community, the Silicon Valley, we see all kinds of people with different
backgrounds, Mexicans, Indians, Iranians, etc. and they all contribute to the big
tech companies that affect not only this country, but globally as well. Its an issue
that people here stand with, keeping the rich diversity the Silicon Valley has.
Inspiration or call to action: (optional)- What do you think can be learned by the
individual, organizations, and/or movements you focused on? How can your community
take inspiration from their actions? In what ways can your community build on these
solutions? What call to action can you suggest to move your community forward and
learn from or use these solutions?
I feel my community already does a lot for immigrants, like foothill
college hosting that meeting with lawyers to let immigrants know their rights, but I
feel we can just allow ourselves to make everyone feel welcome and respected
here and that they are valued to our community.
