Graphic Organizers for students

5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Motivation/Engagement:
TW ask students what strategies they use to get ready to read a story. SW share. TW
explain that usually we look at pictures and the title but today we are going to read the
story without the pictures to describe the characters, setting, problem and solution. We are
going to test how much the pictures help us understand the story. We are going to think
about how important the pictures are to a story. Have students repeat objective.
b .Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:
Day 1:
TW read Officer Buckle and Gloria stopping every few pages to add details about the
characters, setting, problem, and solution to a graphic organizer. TW model if students
are struggling.
After Reading:
TW review the notes that were made in the graphic organizer. TW ask students if they
think any important information is missing or what information the pictures will give that
the words do not give. TW have students mix-pair-share to share their thinking with two
students.
Partner 1: I think the pictures will tell me more about .. because
Partner 2: I also think the pictures will tell me more about...because
SW share out thinking.
Day 2:
Before Reading:
TW explain that yesterday we thought and predicted about how much more the pictures
will tell us when we read a story. Tw review the things that students said. TW explain that
today we are going to read the story with pictures to add to our graphic organizers. We
are going to learn how we use pictures to describe the characters, setting, problem and
solution. Have students repeat objective.
Reading:
TW read Officer Buckle and Gloria stopping every few pages to add details about the
characters, setting, problem, and solution to a graphic organizer. TW model if students
are struggling.
c. Closure:
After Reading:
TW review the notes that were made in the graphic organizer. TW ask students if they
think pictures are important. TW will ask students about chapter books and whether
chapter books need pictures and why. TW have students mix-pair-share to share their
thinking with two students.
Partner 1: I think the pictures tell me more about .. because
Partner 2: I also think the pictures tell me more about...because
SW share out thinking.
d. Extension: SW think of another story they know where the illustrations provide details
that arent provided in the text and write about how the illustrations change the story.

6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentiations for Diverse Learners:

A transcript of the story will be provided for the deaf/hard of hearing student. The gradual release
model is used so content is heavily modeled for students before they complete it on their own.

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:

a. Formative: Teacher observation, student discussion
b. Summative: N/A

8. Homework Assignment: N/A

9. Reflection:
a. Strengths: This book was very engaging for students and many students wanted to read
the book themselves afterward. It does a good job of addressing the standard as well.
b. Concerns: Students needed guidance about what specific parts of the story the
illustrations would give more information on because when asked, students gave very
general answers.
c. Insights: The graphic organizer being split into characters, setting, problem, and
solution made it too structured. I think it would be better to start with an organizer where
students are completing information they got from the pictures and information they got
from the words.
