Site investigation for proposed Tank Farm for Promenade Oil & Gas at Ijegun 2016
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Our geotechnical investigation crew mobilized to the site on the 25th of October, 2016 and the
fieldwork commenced on the 26th of October, 2016. The entire fieldwork was completed on
the 15th of November, 2016 with demobilisation taking place on the 21st of November, 2016.
This report presents the final data obtained during the fieldwork, complete laboratory test results
and engineering recommendations based on the findings during the fieldwork and from the
laboratory test results.
The proposed site is located along Chippet Depot Road, Ijegun, Amuwo Odofin Local
Government Area of Lagos State. The site is located along the banks of the Badagry Creek and
hence is swampy with light vegetation of water hyacinth covering most of the site as at the time
of the campaign. The site can basically be divided into three areas: an upland area with minimal
effects of tidal fluctuations at high tide, a middle region with groundwater levels of up to 0.50m
at high tides and a lower region which was impossible to work on without the use of a barge
even at low tides.
To the north of the site are private developments which also extend eastwards and westwards
whilst southwards is the Badagry Creek which separates the onshore side of Lagos from Snake
Island and other Islands within this area. The main access to the site is via the Lagos-Badagry
Expressway cum Ijegun-Egba Road. A vicinity map of the site is presented in Figure 1 below
whilst a site map is presented in Appendix A of this report.
American and African plates in the Late Jurassic to early Cretaceous (Ihenyen, 2003). Alternate
transgression and regression controlled the deposition of materials within the basin with the last
period of transgression believed to have left the shoreline at the inland end of the Lagos lagoon
(Ajayi, Epps, Farrington & Robinshaw, 1983). Subsequent regressive deposition of terrigenous
materials led to the formation of barrier islands and coast parallel sandy ridges (Omatsola,
1970). The barrier islands are composed of ridges with trenches between them forming lagoons,
swamps and creeks.
Early works on the geology of the Dahomey basin by Jones & Hockey (1964) distinguished
five formations within the basin but later work by Omatsola & Adegoke (1981) proposed groups
and formations. According to Omatsola & Adegoke (1981), the oldest group which is the
Cretaceous Abeokuta Group lies uncomformably over the basement. This group is conformably
overlain by the Paleocene to early Eocene Ewekoro group which is overlain by the Eocene to
Oligocene Ilaro group. The mid to late Tertiary Benin formation overlies the Ilaro group while
Quaternary to recent sediments referred to as Alluvium form the youngest formation within the
basin. Figure 2 shows a geology map of the Nigerian sector of the Dahomey basin.
The following equipment were mobilised to site to execute the above works:
1. 2Nos. Dando 2000 cable percussion drilling Rig complete with accessories;
2. 1No. manually operated locally fabricated cable percussion drilling Rig complete with
accessories;
3. 1No. 10Ton CPT machine equipment;
4. 1No. self-suspended barge;
5. 1No. Speed boat;
6. Other drilling tools and consumables.
3.2.4 Borings
3Nos. boreholes were put down to 50.00m depth while 7Nos. boreholes were put down to
30.00m depth employing cable percussion drilling techniques. The borings were conducted
using 2Nos. Dando 2000 motorized cable percussion drilling Rigs and 1No. manually operated
cable percussion drilling Rig. In cohesive materials, driven U4 and U2 (100mm & 50mm)
undisturbed tube samples were recovered at approximately 1.5m intervals whilst in
cohesionless materials, Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) were carried out at 1.5m intervals and
disturbed samples were recovered from the SPT sampling tool. The SPTs were conducted by
driving a 50mm diameter split spoon sampler into the soil using a 63.5kg hammer with a 760mm
drop. The penetration resistance is expressed as the number of blows (N-value) required to
obtain a 300mm penetration below an initial 150mm penetration. The N-values are displayed
on the Borehole logs. Disturbed (Bag) samples were also recovered at depths between both
Tube and SPT samples. Upon completion, the boreholes were backfilled with sand and cuttings.
The borehole logs for the site are presented in Appendix B. Some of the photos taken during
the field operations are presented in the site photos in Appendix J.
20Nos Cone Penetration Tests (CPT) were successfully carried out using a 10-Ton CPT Rig
with corresponding refusals ranging between 6.30m and 8.00m. The tests were performed using
a 10-Tonne nominal capacity mechanically powered CPT rig. The processed CPT plots are
presented in Appendix C.
Unit I: This is a layer of very soft dark brown fibrous PEAT. Considering that the entire site is
swampy, this layer was encountered in all of the drilled boreholes in all the three areas that the
site has been divided into. The layer varies in thickness between 3.00m and 6.75m across the
entire site.
Unit II: This layer was encountered directly beneath Unit I in all of the boreholes across the
site. It is a layer of very loose to loose dark brown to grey peaty fine to coarse SAND. This
layer varies in thickness between 2.25m and 6.75m across the site.
Unit III: This layer was encountered directly beneath Unit II in all of the boreholes across the
site. It is a layer of loose to medium dense dark brown to grey fine to coarse SAND with
occasional gravels and clay pockets. The layer varies in thickness between 8.25m and 18.00m
Unit IV: This unit directly underlies Unit III in all of the drilled boreholes and it is the last layer
encountered in Area A except for BH10 which is 50.00m deep. It is a layer of soft to firm
greenish grey silty CLAY of intermediate to extremely high plasticity. In BH6, peat traces were
encountered within this layer between 24.75m and 26.25m. The layer varies in thickness
between 2.25m and 14.25m.
Unit V: This unit was only encountered in BH10 in Area A, Area B and Area C where it directly
underlies Unit IV. It is the last unit encountered in BH10 and in Area B and is described as a
layer of medium dense to dense dark to light grey fine to coarse SAND. This layer is between
3.00m and 15.50m thick.
Unit VI: This layer was only encountered in Area C where it directly underlies Unit V. It is
described as a layer of very soft dark greenish grey silty CLAY of intermediate to very high
plasticity. The layer is between 4.50m and 6.00m thick.
Unit VII: This is the last unit encountered in Area C directly underlying Unit VI; It is described
as a layer of medium dense to dense light grey fine to coarse SAND. It is about 14.00m thick
in both boreholes in this area.
The investigation revealed the various soil profiles within the depths explored from the
boreholes drilled. The index and engineering properties of the soils have been carefully assessed
to produce ranges of soil parameters for design purposes for the proposed structure. The
summary of the soil parameters from the borehole are presented in Table 2 below.
The following symbols are employed to denote the soil parameters for the sand and clay:

The presence of a relatively thick layer of very soft fibrous PEAT all across the site and also
the very high groundwater levels at the site during periods of high tides limits the applicability
of shallow foundations on the site. The use of piled foundations is therefore advised.
Analysis for pile safe working loads have been carried out for 300mm, 450mm and 600mm
diameter bored piles. Plots of SWL against pile depth are presented in Appendix I. The safe
working load method of analysis for pile safe working loads was used in the design. A factor of
safety of 2.5 was applied to both the shaft and end bearing resistance of the pile.
Qu = Qb + Qs
Qb = fbAb
Qs = fsAs
Where
= Adhesion factor
The termination depth of the pile is dependent on the imposed structural load of the foundation;
however, the following recommendations are made for each of the areas.
Area A: The piles can be terminated in the upper medium dense SAND at depths of between
14.00m and 15.00m. As a guide, recommended safe working loads with corresponding pile
termination depths are presented in Table 6 below. If loads exceed the recommended load for
the upper SANDs within this area, the piles can be terminated in the lower SANDs at depths of
between 35.00m and 37.00m. A table of recommended safe working loads with corresponding
pile termination depths is presented in Table 7 below.
