3.1 Features
The ZXR10 8900E series switches of ZTE Corporation are applicable to the backbone
layer or convergence layer of Metropolitan Area Network (MAN). They can serve as
backbone/convergence layer switches for corporation and campus networks.
The ZXR10 8900E series switches can provide gigabit, 10-gigabit, 40-gigabit, and
100-gigabit Ethernet interfaces, and support Synchronous Ethernet, the IEEE 1588v2
precision time protocol, and GPS time synchronization. All the ports support full
wire-speed forwarding of Layer 2 and Layer 3, which means that they satisfy the
increasing requirements for bandwidth. The ZXR10 8900E series switches support
multiple unicast and multicast protocols.
Services carried by data network increase rapidly with the network development. It
requires higher Quality of Service (QoS) and better security for network equipment. The
ZXR10 8900E series switches provide policies and resources of QoS and Access Control
List (ACL), which assures the system security.

The ZXR10 8900E series switches provide the hot-swapping function for power supply
modules and Main Control and Switching (MCS) modules, which means that they are
applicable to large-capacity networks with high reliability.

3.4 Architecture
The ZXR10 8900E uses different racks to implement the functions of switching plane,
management plane, and monitoring plane, which operate together to serve as a switch.
MCS modules and line interface cards are installed on a back panel with fast serial
buses. An MCS module contains a switching matrix, a CPU module, and a memory,
and operates in 1:1 redundancy mode. The switching matrix ensures the large switching
capacity required during wire-speed operation of the switch. The high-performance CPU
module ensures fast protocol processing, and the memory provides sufficient storage
space required due to large tables. Each line interface card provides wire-speed packet
processing through its ASIC and provides gigabit and 10-gigabit interfaces.
For the hardware architecture of the ZXR10 8912E/8908E/8905E switch, see Figure 3-10.

For the hardware architecture of the ZXR10 8902E switch, see Figure 3-11.

Figure 3-11 ZXR10 8902E Hardware Architecture

The ZXR10 8900E consists of the following components:

l MCS module
An MCS module contains a CPU module, a large memory, an inter-card switching
module, a monitoring module, and a clock module. The MCS module operates in
1:1 redundancy mode. Each MCS module of the ZXR10 8912E/8908E/8905E switch
also contains a large-capacity switching matrix (with independent planes) to ensure
the switching and capacity expansion capabilities. The MCS modules of the ZXR10
8902E switch have no switching matrix, and the line interface cards are connected

Chapter 3 System Overview

through a fast-speed back panel. Two MCS modules can provide a maximum
switching capacity of 2048 Gbps.
l Line interface cards
Line interface cards process packets and send the packets to a specific port of the
destination line interface card based on the processing result. Each line interface
card has its own forwarding table, and forwarding decisions are determined locally
to ensure the wire-speed switching capability. Some line interface cards support
the clock synchronization and intelligent monitoring functions. The ZXR10 8900E
provides the following line interface cards:

Gigabit Ethernet interface card

10-gigabit Ethernet interface card
40-gigabit Ethernet interface card

l Power supply module

The power supply modules of the ZXR10 8900E can be monitored by the MCS module
through teleindication. The MCS module intelligently monitors the temperature and
operational status (such as overvoltage/undervoltage, power failure alarms, and
current limiting) of the power supply modules with the RS485 interface.
l Fan subrack
The ZXR10 8900E uses an intelligent fan subrack, which can regulate the rotation
speed of each fan based on the temperature of the corresponding card slot. The fan
subrack can also send alarms for fan failure and underspeed.

Introduction
The power supply modules of the ZXR10 8912E/8908E/8905E switch are hot standby.
Either -48 V DC or 220 V AC power supply modules can be used. The DC power supply
modules operate in 1+1 redundancy mode and the AC power supply modules operate in
1+1 or 2+1 redundancy mode.
For the front panel of the ZXR10 8912E/8908E/8905E power supply module, see Figure
4-1.

DC Power Supply Module

A DC power supply module of the ZXR10 8912E/8908E/8905E switch provides -48 V DC
output and has the following functions:
l Overcurrent protection
l Short circuit protection
l Alarms for overtemperature, overpressure, fan failure, and current limiting
l Voltage detection and reporting
l Current detection and reporting
l Temperature detection and reporting
Two DC power supply modules are used for 1+1 redundancy. One power supply module
can fully meet the power requirement of the entire chassis. When both modules operate, if
one module fails, the other module is not affected and still can supply power to the system.

5.1 Overview
The ZXR10 8900E switch fan subrack takes in air at the chassis right side (in face of the
chassis) and dissipates heat by forcing air out from the chassis left side. Aluminum/copper
is used as heat-sink material. An air filter is installed at the air inlet to filter the inducted air,
which can be removed for easy maintenance. The ZXR10 8900E switch supports speed
control of each fan for the corresponding slot.
The ZXR10 8900E series switches have the following types of fan subracks:
l ZXR10 8912E fan subrack
l ZXR10 8908E fan subrack
l ZXR10 8908E fan subrack
l ZXR10 8902E fan subrack

6.4 Instructions on Card Usage

Users must pay attention to the following instructions:
1. The H2XF8D card is not applicable to the ZXR10 8902E switch or slots 512 of the
ZXR10 8912E switch.
2. The switching bandwidth of slots 512 of the ZXR10 8912E switch is 64 Gbps, and
only half-wire-speed is available. Packet forwarding among the S1XF12A cards on
slots 512 converges.
3. The H2XF8D, E1GF24A, and S2XF48A cards of the ZXR10 8900E have the largest
power consumption. The H2XF8D and E1GF24A cards have a power consumption
of nearly 140 W, and the S2XF48A card has a power consumption of nearly 200 W.
Users should focus on the power consumption and heat dissipation.

ZXR10 8900E Hardware Description

The heat dissipation at the first and last slots is worse than other slots. It is not
suggested to install the H2XF8D or E1GF24A card at the first or last slot.
