BACKGROUND TO THE PREPARATION OF THE GUIDELINES

This document is the third edition of the tall wall guidelines published by the
Canadian Home Builders Association Alberta (CHBA-Alberta). The first
edition was printed in July 1999 with revisions issued May 2000, and the second
edition was printed in January 2009.

For the previous edition of the Alberta Building Code (2006), AHITC retained
Bearden Engineering Consultants Ltd. to develop and certify generic designs
and construction details for residential tall walls. This work was completed in
2006 and included significant changes that had been incorporated into the 2006
version of the code as compared with the 1997 version.

OBJECTIVE OF THE GUIDELINES

The objective of the guidelines is to provide cost-effective, practical, generic

designed construction details for wood framed residential tall walls, certified by a
structural engineer registered in the province of Alberta. These guidelines allow
builders to identify and implement structurally appropriate details for the
construction of tall walls in various configurations commonly encountered without
duplicating engineering design services for each project.

CHANGES TO THE GUIDELINES

With the adoption of the new 2014 Alberta Building Code (ABC 2014), CHBA-
Alberta retained Grubb Engineering to review and update the guideline. The
changes necessitated by this code cycle were relatively minor as compared to the
last set of changes and as such the overall format of the document remains largely
unchanged. The notable changes are:

Changes to climatic data values for several locations

Introduction of a 0.70 kPa pressure category to improve efficiency for some
locations, specifically in and around the Lethbridge area

2
SCOPE OF THE GUIDELINES

This manual contains guidelines certified by a structural engineer registered in the

province of Alberta for the design and construction of wood framed residential tall
walls. For the purpose of this document, residential tall walls are considered to be
walls in residential buildings that are constructed under Part 9 of the ABC 2014
and are greater in height than currently permitted under Part 9 of the Code (Table
9.23.10.1) which is 3.6m (11.9 feet). The walls may be load-bearing and/ or wind
bearing.

As mentioned, the guideline covers two basic configurations for the construction
of residential tall walls:

Full Height Stud walls with or without openings up to 26-0 in height

Stacked Walls with or without openings up to 20-0 in height and up to
20-0 in width

The guidelines apply to residential (Part 9) buildings in locations where the

reference wind pressure q50 does not exceed 0.85 kPa and the ground snow load
Ss does not exceed 2.5 kPa. These limiting values ensure cost effective details
could be generated that would encompass the majority of population centres in
Alberta and to ensure that in unusual cases professional engineering input would
be sought. Other references are also available for the design and construction of
tall walls, including the Canadian Wood Councils Tall Wall Workbook 2007
Edition and manufacturers technical literature such as Wall Guide #2570
Specifiers Guide for Residential Application, by Trus Joist.

The structural analysis and design of the wall systems was completed based on
Part 4 Structural Design of the ABC 2014, the associated Structural
Commentaries, and CSA O86-09 Engineering Design in Wood. The specific
assumptions used for this work were:

Maximum ground snow load Ss=2.5 kPa, and Sr=0.1 kPa with the wall
supporting trusses with a maximum span of 32-0 and a maximum 24
overhang (18-0 tributary width). Basic roof snow load factor of
Cb=0.55 is as per Part 9 of the ABC 2014. This presumes typical
residential roof loading with no significant drift loads supported by the
tall wall.

Specified q50 wind pressures are as noted in the tables in the guideline
applied in accordance with Part 4 of the ABC 2014. Exposure factor
Ce is as noted in the guideline. Importance factor Iw = 1.0 for Ultimate
Limit State (ULS) calculations and 0.75 for Serviceability Limit State
(SLS) calculations. Combined external pressure coefficient CgCp =
1.6, and combined internal pressure coefficient CgCp equal to 0.90.
These coefficients were used since they are applicable to typical
enclosed residential dwellings but not to open sheds or warehouses
with large openings.
3
Maximum deflection for wood framing elements of span/ 180. This
makes the guideline appropriate for walls with gypsum wallboard
interior finish and with the exterior surface sheathed and complete with
siding or stucco. This deflection limit is not appropriate for brick or
other masonry veneer finishes.

Typical ceilings (ie. gypsum board) constructed in residential buildings

do not possess sufficient engineering reliability to support the lateral
loads introduced by tall walls and therefore are not considered as a top
support for tall walls. Tall wall framing must connect to and be laterally
supported by wood trusses framed perpendicular to the wall or by
outlook framing as detailed in the connection diagrams. Specifically,
the practice of using stacked gable trusses on top of tall walls is not
allowed within the scope of this guideline. Gable walls must be framed
full height to the underside of wood outlook framing as detailed in the
sections. The height of these walls is measured to the underside of the
outlook framing and not the level at which the ceiling is
constructed.

For full height framed walls, jogs in the wall are allowed along the
width. For stacked wall framing, jogs other than the required
supporting shear walls at each end (refer to Figure Z) are not allowed.

All wall studs, plates, lintels, and jamb members are assumed to be
minimum SPF #2 grade or better sheathed on the exterior with
plywood or OSB sheathing. Builders may substitute 1.5E grade
structural composite lumber (LSL, LVL, or PSL) members of equal size
for members specified in this guideline at their discretion. Substitution
will generally be required for studs longer than about 20-0 due to lack
of availability of conventional lumber in these lengths.

Nails for framing connection are minimum 3.25 x 0.131 diameter,

except for use with hangers, straps, or framing angles where noted.
For these elements use the manufacturers specified nails and fill all
nail holes.

If any of these above assumptions are not validated, then this document does not
apply and cannot be used.

The guidelines that follow are expressed in terms of the framing member sizes
and spacing, dimensional limits on the walls, sheathing requirements, nailing
patterns, lintel specifications, bracing and connection details. It is the
responsibility of the builder to familiarize themselves with all the appropriate
details that apply to a specific project and ensure that the work is completed in
accordance with the engineering designs. Failure to follow the specific details for
the wall construction may result in structural failure of the wall, damage to
property, and/or injury.
4
CERTIFICATION AND LIMITATIONS

The tables and details contained in this report are certified by Grubb Engineering
Corporation. They may be used in a municipality when they have been accepted
and authorized by the authority having jurisdiction in that municipality.

As noted herein, these guidelines are intended for application of typical tall wall
construction on typical residential building projects otherwise constructed in
accordance with the requirements of Part 9 of the ABC 2014. They are
applicable under those conditions specified in the scope section of this report. If
the requirements are not met, then the user must engage a professional
structural engineer to design the wall in accordance with Part 4 of the ABC 2014
and/or refer to the other documents available on this subject.

Notes for Tables 3A and 3B:

1) Maximum stud wall height is measured between points of lateral support. For full
height stud walls lateral support is either supported by trusses spanning perpendicular
to the wall or outlook framing for gable conditions. Drywall ceilings are NOT
considered as a lateral support for these walls. For stacked walls the stud height is
measured from top or bottom to the horizontal supporting plates. Note: For lengths
greater than about 16-0 conventional SPF#2 studs may be difficult to source.
Builders may substitute 1.5E grade structural composite lumber (LSL, LVL, or PSL)
studs of same dimensions for any stated lengths at their discretion.

2) Refer to Table 2 for applicable terrain conditions.

3) Maximum reference pressure for listed stud height. For specific locations round up to
the next nearest pressure listed in table. For example, if q50 for project is 0.42, then use
0.45 values.

4) The default connection for studs to top and bottom plates is Type A (end-nailing). For
the shaded values stud to plate connection Type B (framing clip) is required. Refer to
the sections and details for specific nailing requirements.
