Last March 18, 2017, Saint Michael College of Caraga conducted a
seminar - workshop on the K to 12 Instructions and Assessment Using
Understanding by Design (UbD) Format at Amontay Beach Resort Function
Hall. The Understanding by Design framework (UbD framework) offers
integrating curriculum, instruction, and assessment within a unit of study in
any discipline, a unit design template for beginning with the end in mind, a
way to enhance meaningful understanding and transfer of learning.
Understanding by Design (UbD) provides a common language for educators
who are interested in promoting student understanding rather than formulaic
knowledge or recall learning. It also provides a framework and a toolkit of
research-based best practices that have been proven effective in helping
educators to promote understanding-based results for learning, expand the
range of assessment tools and processes they use to monitor student
achievement, and enhance their design of instructional activities to promote
high levels of student achievement. The main point of (UbD) fosters transfer
of learning to create independent problem-solvers and we equip them with
understandings, skills, and knowledge that are essential to real-life
situations.
