Technical Text: Appraising the Value of a Home
The role of an appraiser is to estimate the value of land or real property. Real property is another way of saying real
estate. In order to do this, appraisers often use comparables. Another house that has the same number of bedrooms,
bathrooms, and room sizes would be a comparable if it is in the same neighborhood of the home being appraised and has a
similar layout. The appraiser also investigates the condition of the home. All of this is used to determine the value of a
property.

Day 2
Scientific Text: Memory and the Brain
Synapses are important for sending information from one neuron in the brain to another. A synapse is the name given to
a cell structure that sends electric and chemical energy to different sections of the brain. When this event occurs, scientists say
that a synapsis has taken place.
The Role of Synapses and Memory
Information that is stored in the brain is lost if this information is not rehearsed periodically. When several synapses are
activated at the same time and rehearsal happens, information is stored into a permanent section of the brain. As a result,
scientists believe that synapses are for memory.

a combination of smaller cities known as city-states. Each city-state had its own ruler and laws. In terms of food, they grew
tomatoes, potatoes, and corn. Plus, they raised bees for honey. For currency, they used shells and salt.

Humanities Text: Analyzing Art
Every great artist needs inspiration. This is true even for the most renowned writers and painters throughout history.
Diego Rivera is a Mexican artist that is known for his colorful murals. They depict life in Mexico during his time. He opposed
the wealthier ruling class and drew images of everyday people conducting daily tasks in his paintings. Another painter is Mary
Cassatt. Her paintings mostly show the daily lives of women and children. During the 1800s, most women did not work outside
of the home. They served as the primary caregiver. Mary Cassatts artwork depicted the strong mother and child bonds.

Historical Text: Lewis & Clark
The United Stated acquired a large, fifteen state area of land in a transaction known as the Louisiana Purchase. This
one purchase doubled the size of the nation instantly. President Jefferson wanted to know what was on the land and needed
maps drawn of the new boundaries that formed the country. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were appointed by the
president for the task. In a little more than two years, they traveled across the Unites States keeping accurate journals of
everything that they saw including bodies of waters, Native American tribes, and a variety of exotic plants and animals.
