Opening Statement

Life is precious and should not be taken for granted. According to the Merriam-

Webster dictionary, life is defined by the condition that distinguishes animals and plants

from inorganic matter: these differences include the capacity for growth; that there is the

main endeavor of human history. As Stephen Hawking once said, There should be no

boundary to human endeavor. However bad life may seem, while there is life, there is

hope. Who are we to deny a well-deserved life to someone that will grow to be whatever

they wish. As an individual that is all we can aspire to be. Our team argues that abortion

is unethical. As Henry Hyde once said, This is a debate about our understanding of

human dignity, what it means to be a member of the human family, even though tiny,

powerless and unwanted.

Abortion is not justifiable in any circumstance. This is not a matter of religion, but

one of ethics. Most people consider the embryo or fetus to be part of the mother, yet

when we look at its DNA, the building block differentiating all forms within one species,

we see that it is foreign to its mother. The Constitution guarantees, and I quote, No State

shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens

of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property.

So we, those with a voice, must protect those who dont. What if I told you that,

right now, someone was choosing if you were going live or die? And this decision is

based on what you are now, neglecting all of your potential. We must not stand for this

injustice and fight for human life. Life that is full of exploration and adversity. If we

cannot do so, what does this say about our society? We are all human arent we? Every

human life is worth the same, and worth saving. (J.K. Rowling).

Main Points

According to the cite, Students for Life there are 1.06 million abortions performed

every year, which means about 2,904 abortions are performed every single day. That

means that more than 1 million lives are being taken away without justification. The

mother might have made some mistakes, which might be the reason for the abortion, but

the fetus should not be the one paying for those mistakes. It is morally wrong to abort

because you are technically killing a human being. The fetus is a completely different

human being apart from the mother. The mothers as well as the fetus have rights that

should be protected. The fetus has the right to continue living for the reason that they

have not done anything that they should be killed for. According to the survey performed

in 2009 in the US, 61% of Americans say that abortion should be illegal after the fetal

heartbeat has begun and that is because the fetus has just begun its life and they have the

right to continue living it. Just like the mother has the right to protect her body and make

her decisions then so does the fetus. The fetus is not the same person as the mother so

they have separate rights that should be protected.

When the mother decides to abort and take the life of that fetus, she is only

thinking of herself and not of the fetus. There are other alternatives that can be taken such

as adoption if the mother does not want to take charge of the baby. Abortion is punishing

for the unborn child who has not committed any harm, it is just the outcome of the

mothers actions. If the fetus had the ability to decide, it would choose its life. The fetus

is so different from the mother and father; it has its own features, its own organs, and its

own heart, its own everything. There is no reason why the fetus should not have the right

to live. As soon as the unborn child is in the womb, there should not be any doubting

whether the child should live or not. Everyone has the right to live and the right to prove

that they can be something in life.

Abortion is killing someone, and it is killing an unborn child that has no say in his

or her own life. Abortion will not only affect the unborn child but it will also affect the

mother. After the mother aborts the child, many of them have lifelong regrets. The mother

will feel guilty because she knows that she just took the life of an innocent child.

Abortion has a lot of effects and its not only the regret but it is also psychological

damage. The abortion can affect the women mentally because that is their baby, the baby

they made, mistake or not, but it is someone who was living inside of them whose life is

now being taken away. Although the mother might not have met the baby physically, they

instantly care for the child although they might not admit it. Women abort without fully

thinking about it, there are other things that can be done if the women do not want to

keep the child. The reason women suffer from psychological damage after is because

they realize that there were other paths they couldve taken but now all they have is

regret.

Not only the women suffers from psychological damage but she may also suffer

from medical complications later in life such as ectopic pregnancies may double, have the

chance of future miscarriages, and pelvic inflammatory disease increases.

women as well because they have a lot of problems afterwards. When aborting the child

the women are putting themselves at risk because she is at risk of having medical

complications. These things can be prevented if they decide to have the baby because not

only is it hurting one person but it is hurting two. The baby is getting killed and the

women can have complications later in life. The women can suffer miscarriages when she

tries to have another baby and that may be taken as a sign that the women should have

never aborted and should have found other ways to solve the problem.

Counter-Argument

You may argue that women may need an abortion because of circumstances that may

make it impossible to care for a child. However, if the mother really does want to raise

the child there are countless programs that provide services for free. Counseling, housing,

medical care, job training, food, and clothing are some services provided throughout the

country. According to abort73.com, On average, women give at least 3 reasons for

choosing abortion: 3/4 say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or other

responsibilities; about 3/4 say they cannot afford a child; and 1/2 say they do not want to

be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner (AGI). Most

women are having an abortion because they do not have the money and/or they want to

have other responsibilities not pertaining to raising a child, but these women can adopt

the child. The child should not be aborted because they are not at fault for the events that

led to its creation.

Another argument you may have is that abortion is used only as last resort and is

frequently a result of rape, incest or danger to the mothers life. However for a lot of

women in the country abortion has become a method of birth control. By 1992, 46% of

all abortions were repeat abortions. According to operationrescue.org, the past year about

1.5 million abortions were performed in the United States, but at most only 1% was for

reasons of rape or incest and less than 7% were to protect the health of the mother. The

other 92 percent was for none of these reasons meaning they could have had the child and

raised it or could have put the child through adoption, but they didnt and instead ended

an innocent life.

Closing Statement

In conclusion, abortion is something that should be stopped immediately and

should be dealt with government officials in order to stop the cause innocent deaths of

unborn humans. Although many women do have reasonable idea as to why abortion

should be the answer, it is still extremely wrong to kill a fetus and there are also different

alternatives to disperse of the child. It does not immediately have to lead into the abortion

of a child. There alternatives such as adoption or safer protection in intercourse. There are

many steps you can take in order to stop accidents to happen and regretting the option of

abortion later in life.
