Mumbai: Debit cards have
conclusively displaced credit
cards as the primary mode of
payment in the country follo-
wing demonetisation. Until
October last year, despite out-
numbering credit cards by a
factor of more than 25, debit
cards accounted for only 42%
of the total card spend. This
has jumped to 60% after de-
monetisation, which was an-
nounced on November 8, 2016.
The change is largely dri-
ven by small public sector
lenders like Oriental Bank of
Commerce and Punjab &
Sind Bank, where usage of
cards has gone up nearly five
times. Debit card transac-

The Trade Mark Rules, 2017,
which were notified recently,
have revised the procedures
and made it easier for com-
panies to file applications for
registration of sound
marks, by appending an MP3
file in the application.
Over the years, there ha-
ve been only a handful of re-
gistrations of sound marks
in Indiathe first being Ya-
hoo Yodel of Yahoo Inc,
which applied in 2004 for re-
gistration of the sound of a
human voice yodelling the
word Yahoo. The US firm,
has also registered this so-
und mark in other nations.
For a sound mark to be re-
gistered, the applicant needs
to prove factual distinctive-
ness of the soundin other

2 Hizb men killed

Modi has asked ministers
and MPs to engage in a ma-
jor public outreach over
the goods and services tax
(GST) with legislation re-
lated to the tax reform ex-
pected to be passed by Par-
liament soon.
The PM told a recent
meeting of the cabinet that
the government needs to
vigorously explain the ben-
efits of the tax reform that
he thinks will be a signifi-
cant milestone for the NDA
government. He is under-
stood to have spoken of the
need to involve the party
organisation and MPs as
well.
Finance minister Arun
Jaitley is expected to intro-
duce four bills related to
GST in Parliament on Mon-
day. In the evening, Lok

workshop for lawmakers

Number of
fishermen
caught by Pak
rises to 105

Rajkot: The number of fisher-
men apprehended by Pakistan
Marine Security Agency
(PMSA) from Gujarat off Jak-
hau coast on Saturday has gone
up to 105.
We have got a confirmation
that PMSA has apprehended 19
boats with 105 fishermen since
Saturday night. Of these, 13 bo-
ats are from Porbandar, four
from Okha and two from Mang-
rol, Bharat Mody, president,
Porbandar Boats Association,
said on Sunday.
National Fishworkers' Fo-
rum (NFF) secretary Manish
Lodhari said the PMSA had ear-
lier this month also apprehen-
ded 115 fishermen and seized 19
boats. With these arrests, the to-
tal number of Gujarat fisher-
men caught by PMSA in March
alone has gone up to nearly 225
with nearly three dozen boats.
