Keeping Up With State Business

We have several committees on the state level who carry on the business of the state organization.
Chapter presidents receive memos at the first of every month to inform them of current happenings
and deadlines. Listed below are a few important reminders.

From the Xi State Scholarship Committee:

The state scholarship committee encourages all members working on a graduate degree to apply for a
DKG scholarship. The deadline for application is February 1, 2017. The application form and guidelines
can be found on the Xi State website under Forms. All application packets must include the original plus
5 copies of the application as well as specified letters of recommendation and the applicant's photograph.
Please follow directions as detailed on the application form.

From the Leadership Development Committee:

The Advanced Leadership Management Seminar will be March 31-April 1, 2017. For more information
check the Xi State website. If you have attended the Leadership Management Seminar but not the ad-
vanced training you need to register for this seminar. Check the Xi State website for more information.

From the US Forum:

The US Forum of DKG publishes a free newsletter concerning issues important to education, women,
and children. This newsletter is available to anyone, not just DKG members. It is FREE, Anyone wish-
ing to receive the newsletter should send a request to editor Angela Bedenbaugh at Beden-
baugh.Angela@gmail.com.

Spotlight on Our New Members

Shannon Seigle
My name is Mrs. Seigle and this is my 19th year teaching science. I have taught a
variety of sciences to students in grade ranges 7th grade through college. This is
my 3rd year teaching 11th grade Biology at The STEM School Chattanooga
and 12th grade Scientific Research. I love science. I love doing hands-on activi-
ties and labs, and I love seeing young people enjoy and accept the challenge of
being scientists. Last year I was voted as STEM School Teacher of the Year at
my school and was named the TSTA Tennessee Science Teacher of the Year
for Grades 9-12. Throughout my years of teaching I have served a variety of
roles such as a Clinical Instructor for Project Inspire through PEF, science de-
partment chair and Science Leader Network representative, acted as the teacher liaison for the Teleme-
terED GigTank Accelerator group and have led system-wide professional development sessions for other
science educators to name a few.
Other than being a teacher, I am also momma to an 8-year-old daughter named Lily and the wife of an
inclusion teacher name Ken. Outside of school hours, Lily keeps me busy reading many books, playing in the
backyard, pretend playing with many princess dollies, building wooden block towers, bicycle riding, and lots
of other games and activities.

Lisa Bolus
Ever since I was 6 and taught my 3 year old brother how to read, I knew I
wanted to be a teacher. I grew up on the West Coast of Florida and gradu-
ated from Florida Southern College in 1995. I taught English and Journalism
for 5 years in Florida before staying home to care for my daughter in 2000.
Twelve years and 2 more daughters later, I returned to teaching and have
been the English I teacher at the STEM School Chattanooga for the past 4
years. I love the joy that being with my 9th graders brings me every day and can't imagine doing anything
else.

Kimberly Hines
Kimberly has worked for Siskin Early Learning for six years. She received a
Masters Specialist degree in 2011 in the field of school psychology. She is
also a childrens and youth minister for her church.

New Year Resolutions

As we enter 2017, many will make resolutions to become a better me. Most of us will not stick to
the goals for various reasons. The Today Show offers these five tips to have a happier, healthier life
in 2017.
1) Subtract something.let go of something you do not need. It could be an activity, items in your
closet, or even a bad relationship.
2) Focus on people and your own wellness. Relationships and good mental health have the biggest im-
pact on ones happiness not more money.
3) Set quarterly resolutions, not New Year resolutions. Maybe you have a list of 12 things you want to
accomplish this year, only focus on three at a time. A ninety day goal is much more doable.
4) Drop the all-or-nothing attitude. You do not have to be perfect, just strive to be better.
5) Make a conscious effort to unplug. Turn off those electronics and have a technology free time,
whether it be once a day, week, or month. Then do a self-evaluation after that time. How do you
feel mentally and emotionally? Maybe the unplug should become a habit .

Note: Alpha Gamma published this in their newsletter. Thanks Alpha Gamma!
