Inquiry: Under what conditions may ASTM A 240-93
UNS S20153 plate, sheet, and strip be used in the
manufacture of Section VIII, Divisions 1 and 2 welded
pressure vessels for low temperature service?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that ASTM
A 240-93 UNS S20153 may be used for the manufacture
of Section VIII, Divisions 1 and 2 welded pressure
vessels for low temperature service provided the follow-
ing requirements are met.
(a) The heat treatment requirements are given in
ASTM A 480-93.
320F (196C). The maximum design temperature
shall be +100F (40C).
(c) The maximum allowable stress values shall be
27.1 ksi for Division 1;1 the maximum allowable design
stress intensity value, Sm, in tension shall be 30.0 ksi
for Division 2.
(d) Separate welding procedure qualification and per-
formance qualification shall be conducted in accordance
with Section IX.
(e) The applicable rules of Section VIII, Division
1, Part UHA, or Division 2, shall be met. All cold
formed materials resulting in an extreme fiber elongation
by more than 4% as determined by UCS-79(d) formula
for Division 1 and AF-605(a) for Division 2 shall be
reheat-treated in accordance with (a), above.
(f) For external pressure use Fig. CS-2, Section II,
Part D, for both Division 1 and Division 2.
(g) This Case number shall be identified in the
documentation for the material and shown on the
Manufacturers Data Report.
