activity: Frozen Tag

- I will choose one student to be IT.
- When I blow my whistle, the students will run around the
gym and the student who is IT will try to tag the other
students.
- If you are tagged, you become frozen. You must stand
with your arms out and our legs apart like a star.
- Any player who is not it can free you by crawling
through your legs, and then you can rejoin the game.
3. Get the students to begin playing this and monitor. Add another student
to be it if needed and change-up who is it after every minute or so.
After about 5 minutes of this, blow the whistle and get the students to
come back to the center and take a seat.

Body of Lesson 1. Remind and explain the elements of catching to the students:
(9 min.)
- Keep your eyes on the object until it arrives in your hands.
- Get your body behind the object (i.e. in front of its flight path).
- If you see the ball passing to one side, move your whole body to
the side. Dont just reach your arms out to the side.
- If the object is arriving above your waist, your palms face
forward, your fingers point up, and your two thumbs should be
touching.
- If the object is arriving below the waist, your palms face
forward, your fingers point down, and your two pinky fingers
should be touching.
- As you receive the object with your hands, you should bend your
arms and bring the object in towards your body.
- Cues: Eyes on the ball; Get behind the ball; Hands together
(pinkies or thumbs touch); Bring to body.
2. Explain the main activity to the students: Triangle Toss and Catch
- Leader divides children into groups of three.
- Children spread out around activity space and form a triangle
with their group.
- Each group has a ball.

2

- Children begin by tossing the ball clockwise and practicing their

catching.
- Leader can suggest the following: Change the direction (i.e.
counterclockwise). Toss to either partner. Toss and catch
below the waist. Toss and catch above the waist. Toss with
your other hand.
3. As the students practice tossing and catching walk amongst them observing
them and giving them positive feedback. Carry out assessment of their
catching using the rubric recording students names on if they are carrying
out the cues for catching.

Closure 1 When we have ran out of time for gym, thank the students for their hard
(1 min.) work and participation, and praise their catching skills. Ask them to put
the materials away and line-up at the door to go back to the classroom.

Sponge Activity N/A

Assessment Observational: Observe how well the students can catch the ball from their
partner with minimal assistance, using the above cues.
Summative: Observe students abilities to follow the steps involved in catching.
Use the anecdotal checklist to record students names on their level of ability to
complete all cues for catching.

Specific Learner Some students may need some extra help with catching the ball. Converse with
