Select a topic from Part I and discuss three reasons why you feel the topic demands code
compliance in residential design. Explain what could happen if code compliance is not met
for this topic.
Fire and Life Safety
It is important to have Fire and Life Safety code compliance in residential design in
order to ensure life safety, fire protection, and fire prevention. These codes protect occupants
and first-responders from the potential damage and injury fire can cause by regulating materials
used in new construction and alterations, ensuring that fire-resistant materials are maintained,
and creating a guidelines to ensure inhabitants are safe from potential fire hazards in their
homes. ICCs 2015 effective use of the International Fire Code provides a model code which
regulates minimum requirements for any existing or new building, storage, processes, or facility.
This fire code addresses a multitude of issues including but not limited to life safety, fire
protection, and fire prevention. The document covers adequate water supply for fire-fighters as
well as building access for first-responders. The IFC document also covers regulations of
hazards that can be housed within structures which include the application of possible
flammable finishes.
The National Fire Protection Agency, or NFPA, has also set standards designed to
minimize the risk and effects of fire by establishing criteria for building, processing, design, and
other activities in the U.S. (The Importance). These codes cover the full range of fire and life
safety issues from fire protection systems and equipment and occupant safety in new and
existing buildings to hazardous materials, flammable and combustible liquids, and more
(The Importance). Failure to comply with fire and safety codes puts the building or structure
at risk of catching fire and causing damage to its surroundings and injury to its inhabitants.
