Architectural Style
The historical style used on this building is Dormer Pediment
Second Empire. The most important aspects window

of this style are the mansard roof, a dormer Two-over-two

windows
window protruding from the roof, and the Mansard
corner pavilion. Second Empire was created Roof
to be a more elaborate and grander style,
derived from and similar to Italianate and
Renaissance Revival. The combinations of Projecting
Cornice
roofs used are impeccable, each roofline
Corner
defining it space, and a broad color scheme Pavilion
throughout tie together the look. (Harwood)
Starks Project Concept Statement
A light, cool, contemporary and relaxed atmosphere is needed for this space. A
modern, Scandinavian style will incorporate natural materials and simple construction
methods for the furniture and materials used throughout, creating a minimalistic feel.
Due to the small scale of the space an open concept will be best used and proficient in
allowing natural light to reach all living areas. Muted natural tones and using an
analogous color scheme for the cabinetry and walls allowing for Mrs. Starks
photography to serve as pops of color. A versatility in line, from horizontal, vertical,
to curvilinear will appear through architectural and design features. Allowing for forms
to take shape and adding textures to fill the space. Each aspect selected will produce a
calm, clean, and personalized quality for this design. (Harwood)
Stark Project Color Palette
By adding hue and
desaturating the green color,
and adding a bit more blue to
design a cool, muted color
best suited for this space, by
enhancing variations of blue
and/or green lightened values
to create an analogous color
scheme. The next color is
again desaturated, and with
more hue added to give a pale (Figure 1 Snakes and Ladder Garden)
blue color, thus creating a
clean and airy mood.

Fire and Life Safety
It is important to have Fire and Life Safety code compliance in residential design in

used in new construction and alterations, ensuring that fire-resistant materials are maintained,
and creating a guidelines to ensure inhabitants are safe from potential fire hazards in their
homes. ICCs 2015 effective use of the International Fire Code provides a model code which
regulates minimum requirements for any existing or new building, storage, processes, or facility.
This fire code addresses a multitude of issues including but not limited to life safety, fire
protection, and fire prevention. The document covers adequate water supply for fire-fighters as
well as building access for first-responders. The IFC document also covers regulations of
hazards that can be housed within structures which include the application of possible
flammable finishes.
The National Fire Protection Agency, or NFPA, has also set standards designed to
minimize the risk and effects of fire by establishing criteria for building, processing, design, and
other activities in the U.S. (The Importance). These codes cover the full range of fire and life
safety issues from fire protection systems and equipment and occupant safety in new and
existing buildings to hazardous materials, flammable and combustible liquids, and more
(The Importance). Failure to comply with fire and safety codes puts the building or structure
at risk of catching fire and causing damage to its surroundings and injury to its inhabitants.
