Lesson Plan Title: My Place Project Part 2

Date: March 15th 2017

Subject: Arts Education Grade: 6/7
Topic: Importance of place Essential Question:

Materials: pencils, eraser, cardstock paper, picture of their bedroom

Stage 1- Desired Results you may use student friendly language

What do they need to understand, know, and/or able to do?
Students will need to be able to draw an accurate representation of their bedroom onto
the paper. They will need to use the rule of thirds to divide up their paper to draw.

Broad Areas of Learning:

My place project will promote life long learners by connecting curriculum outcomes to the students
own lives. Drawing and painting a representation of their own bedrooms in the school setting
connects school life to home life. This project will build sense of self by reflecting on their own places
and what they find important to them. Thinking about what in their rooms make it special to them.
Importance of community and place are shown through bringing their own homes to school and
connecting as a community. By building this connection to place it will strengthen the notion of being
engaged citizens by focusing in onto what is important to them in their place.

Cross-Curricular Competencies:
Students will develop thinking by learning a new artists style and applying to their own personal place
and develop drawing skills. Students will develop identity by creating their own personal place on
paper and the elements that make it their own. Students will develop literacies by the opportunity to
reflect on themselves and what they value in their everyday lives. By reflection on their own lives and
producing a image that reflects themselves students will develop social responsibility to themselves.

PGP Goals:
2.2 proficiency in the Language of Instruction
2.4 ability to use technologies readily, strategically and appropriately
2.6 ability to strive for/pursue new knowledge

3.1 the ability to utilize meaningful, equitable, and holistic approaches to

assessment and evaluation

Stage 2- Assessment

Assessment FOR Learning (formative) Assess the students during the learning to help
determine next steps.
Formative assessment during the work period to start drawing the students rooms will
be walking around the rooms talking to each student and checking on their progress.
Each student should be started their drawing to get ready to paint and follow the
guidelines. This drawing should be a rough sketch just to get the basic ideas of their
rooms down, no small details should be present and the students should start thinking
about the three objects they want to include in their paintings and the bright colour they
want to use.

Assessment OF Learning (summative) Assess the students after learning to evaluate

what they have learned.
At the end of the work period students will hand in their drawings to me so I can go over
them after class to note everyone progress and if we can start to paint next class.
Stage 3- Learning Plan

Motivational/Anticipatory Set (introducing topic while engaging the students)

At the beginning of class once students have sat down give reminder of what
is expected of these paintings and that today is a drawing period where
students are to begin their rough sketch. Visit Erika Stearlys website for
inspiration of the style we are using.

Main Procedures/Strategies:
1. Students get settled
2. Go over that today is a work period to start drawing
3. Remind students what is expected of the paintings. Three of more objects from their
rooms presented in painting and at least one bright colour used.
4. Introduce rule of thirds for drawing.
5. Work time
6. Students hand in pictures to me

-direct instruction, examples, student work

Adaptations/Differentiation:
For students who forgot their picture they will be either working on social studies
questions or cleaning the lab.
P will work on the collage with the educational assistant

Closing of lesson:
Students will hand in drawings to me and talk about next day we will continue and
hopefully start painting.

Personal Reflection:
This lesson went very well, my instruction has really improved since the beginning. The
best aspect of the lesson was teaching the students the rule of thirds in a non structured
way and as I walked around when they were drawing most of the students were using this
technique!
