The objective of the Symposium organised by the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) in collaboration
with the University of Bristol (UK) is to share research findings and discuss current issues and policies
related to teaching, learning and assessing through the medium of a second or foreign language across the
globe.

Plenary speakers include

• Professor Elana Shohamy (University of Tel-Aviv, Israel)
• Professor Casmir Rubagumya (University of Dodoma, Tanzania)

CALL FOR PAPERS


We invite submissions of individual Papers and Posters from scholars, university educators, teachers,
researchers and policy makers on any theme related to the Symposium topic. The themes are:

 Assessment, testing, evaluation  Sociolinguistics, culture

PAPER PRESENTATION
Papers will be 20 minutes in lengths plus 10 minutes for discussion. They will be related to the themes of
the Symposium. Abstracts should be 250 words in length and describe the background, objectives,
methods, results, conclusions, and implications or significance of the research study. The titles should
accurately reflect the content and be clear to the intended audience. Your presentation will include
supporting details and examples, and will contain evidence of current practice and/or research.

POSTER PRESENTATION
Interactive poster sessions allowing for informal discussion with participants will be arranged. Presenters
are expected to be available for discussion in 30 minute slots. Each poster should be no larger than 84.1
cm. x 118.9 cm. (or 33.1 in. x 46.8 in.). The contents should be legible from a one-meter distance.
Abstracts should be 250 words in length and describe the background, objectives, methods, results,
conclusions, and implications or significance of the research study. They should include a title, the name
and institutional affiliation of the presenter(s), and a brief text with clearly labelled photos, drawings,
graphs, or charts.

Abstracts written in English (max 250 words for a 30 minute Paper) or Poster Presentation
should be sent to mary.takahama@bristol.ac.uk (with a copy to said.juma@suza.ac.tz) or posted to Said
Khamis Juma, Box 146, Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Accepted file formats are .doc, .rtf and .pdf.

Abstracts received after 5:00 pm GMT, Friday, 30th July, 2010 will not be considered.

All proposal submissions will be blind reviewed. All reviewers’ identities will remain confidential.
Proposal reviewers will use the evaluation criteria and scoring rubric below. Total possible score is based
on a scale of 9 points.
Does the abstract relate to some aspect of teaching, learning, assessment in second language
