INTRODUCING TBILISI
Tbilisi is a city of contrasts. A meeting point between eastern and western
civilisations for centuries it remains so today. A city built along a riverbank and
surrounded by hills, a settlement dating back to the 4th century, but with a
skyline which now includes 21st century architecture. Tbilisi is the capital of
Georgia and can be at once international, cosmopolitan and sophisticated,
while remaining essentially and distinctly Georgian. It preserves a close focus
on family and friends, and can feel as homely as a small town, not as lonely
as a big city.
Tbilisi is refreshingly unpretentious. Big-business logos dont dominate its
street-scenes. There is a smattering of international brands but it hasnt
yet been swamped by the corporate homogeneity that has ruined the
individuality of many capitals.
The architecture marks a path from antiquity through genteel 18th century
balconied-homes to austere Soviet structures and the ultra-modern. The
old is not overly polished. Many cities renovate to the point where buildings
and entire districts lose any sense of authenticity. That has happened to a
limited extent, especially in the section of the Old Town around the slopes of
Narikala Fortress, but thankfully, huge swathes of the city remain unmolested
by over-zealous restoration schemes. There are acres of tired, graceful old
buildings with cracked walls, decades of layers of paint fading and peeling.
Quaint homes with precariously leaning balconies and hard worked ancient
wooden doors leading to courtyards with family biographies overflowing
from decades of love, loss, deaths and births.
We have put the beautiful and recently renovated Opera House on our cover.
A pseudo-Mauritanian style building from the end of 19th century it was
reopened in January this year, after six years of exhaustive renovation works.
Exploring its interior and gorgeous wall art is well worth your time. Tbilisis
Opera will once again testify to the affluent cultural heritage of the city youre
visiting, and its originality - taking source from its location at - as youll often
hear - the crossroads of the east and the west.

1 BARBARESTAN
When they say Barbarestan is a family restaurant, they mean it. Diners are wel-
comed by one of the members of a huge (10 children) family and most of them
are involved in the restaurant business. Babare stands for Barbare Jorjadze - a
legendary Georgian chef and the author of the first extensive book about Geor-
gian cuisine back in the 19th century. The restaurant has revisited this cook book
and now allows both visitors and Georgians alike to rediscover forgotten trea-
sures of the countrys heritage: the pumpkin patties and cornellian cherry soup
with mint are our favorites. One word of warning: the restaurant doesnt serve
any beer, but does offer a wonderful selection of kvevri wines, fitting given that
the basement is an original 19th century wine cellar; wine is also available by

Littera is where progressive Georgian cuisine meets history. Its located in an
impressive courtyard behind the Georgian Writers house in a building well
over 120 years old, and once belonged to the father of Georgian brandy - Da-
vit Sarajashvili, who built the place as a gift to his wife. Where better for local
food legend Tekuna Gachechiladze to bring his latest culinary venture. Its her
experience and daring to dabble in the untouchable that makes this place
unique, taking Georgian traditional food and mixing it with the latest in taste
and trends. Add in an ambient garden atmosphere and you have a winner.
There are two menus, day and evening, both remarkable. Take the shrimp
kharcho and mussels chakapuli: no Georgian would even usually think about
combing the two and yet Gachechiladze has created something delicious.
Also worth trying are the trout tartare with ajika paste and for dessert Lit-
teras signature mascarpone cream and raspberries. Theres a top selection
of bio wines and brandy available. If youre lucky, you might even get to sit

We love Ezo. It offers homey cuisine - just like mama makes - in combina-

We recommend Maspindzelo as one of the best Khinkali (Georgian dumplings)
spots in the city centre, particularly as its open 24 hours. Found in the old town,
very close to the famous sulphur baths, Maspindzelo takes pride in its reputation
for a high standard of service and hospitality - Maspindzeli in Georgian actually
means host. Youll find live music every evening and some outside seating from

6 MEPETUBANI
This Georgian restaurant has taken over a beautiful oriental historical building
which was at times a bath and at times the first printing house of Tbilisi. You can
find one of the most extensive classical Georgian menu in the city, wide choice
of fish dishes and specials like rabbit chakhokhbili [a stew with herbs], Chicken
kabab with sulguni cheese or blackberry sauce and Lamb with quince. Different
dishes from regional Georgian cuisine are presented here. Tables are covered
view on Mtkvari river and dim coloured lights - is the best highlight of the res-
taurant. Theres a show program with either dancers, singers or argan players in

7 SHAVI LOMI
Located in an arched basement with an intimate atmosphere. There is a no-
smoking room and a second, bigger one for smokers. Often crowded, Shavi
Lomi is a legend on the Tbilisi dining scene, not all that big a surprise given that
the food here is simply delicious. The cuisine is Georgian fusion and includes
treats such as beef in Saperavi wine and beef stew in pomegranate sauce.
Another interesting dish, not particularly popular in Georgia, is couscous. As a
starter we recommend the Tushetian guda board, and as dessert, homemade

It is enough just to look at the well-illustrated menu of Siang-Gan to know
how good the place is. From the house special Beijing duck (just 75 Lari)

Gan has an impressive assortment of soups and a fine selection of veg-
etarian dishes, including a couple dishes tofu lovers will enjoy. No sweet

Just off Rustaveli Avenue the newly-opened Piano Bar on the top floor of the Art
Boutique Hotel is one of the classiest venues in Tbilisi. A big part of its roof is a
glass cupola, which permits guests to enjoy a 270-degree panoramic view of the
town, and a particularly stunning vista on Mtatsminda mountain with the funicu-
lar and TV tower - one of the symbols of Tbilisi. All of these together with a classi-
cal setting and those memorable white lamps bending towards your table make
Piano Bar quite a romantic place. The food is international and drinks are more

Sometimes people get things just right. Organique has been designed with care
and flair and shows a great understanding of balance. It is harmonious in so
many ways; the use of wood for furniture and furnishings, lighting that is soft
and warm, food that is delicious and healthy. As the name suggests, the food is
made as much as possible with organic ingredients, with meat and fish dishes
cooked in the josper, (pronounced hosper) a unique super-hot charcoal grill
that seals in flavours. From a small entrance the venue climbs through different
levels, growing in size until at the top the space is surprisingly large. Oh, and

Believe it or not, Picasso is actually the name of a Chinese restaurant. Its a
wonderfully located place with an extensive menu accompanied with pictures
to make sure you get exactly what you want. Theres a wide selection of beef,
chicken or lamb but we also found an impressive selection of vegetarian dishes.
Cooks are from Beijing. The setting of the restaurant is classic and service is very

What we love about Coffeesta are its breakfast/lunch offers and its assortment
of proper frappes during the summer. From 08:00 to 12:00 a cup of cappuc-
cino with a croissant or muffin is only 5 lari, and there are quick lunch snacks
for 6 lari between 12:00 and 15:00. High window seats have views out on
Rustaveli, theres good Wifi and loads of tasty refreshments to sip. Do not miss
the coconut or strawberry frappes or iced caramel latte. Coffeesta occupies
quite a large space with dozens of tables upstairs and a room for smokers

perts trained all the bakers and chefs working here. The range and quality of
croissants, tarts and confectioneries is respectable enough to grace a Parisian

all for eating in or take away. All ten locations in the chain are smoke and alcohol

The cafe is located in Akhundov House, former residence Mirza Fatali Ak-
hundzade (the founder of Azerbaijani drama). A beautiful basement of the
house is turned into an art-gallery. Rather strangely, a life-sized wax figure
of the writer sits in one corner of the cafe. The food selection includes soups,
salads and crepes, while the wine list features French wines and Champagne.

its culture and the Caucasus. They also sell CDs of Georgian traditional mu-
sic. The caf serves freshly ground coffee and has a wide selection of teas.

 GETTING AROUND
BUSES
Tbilisis buses are yellow and each displays its route number on the front.
Many bus stops have an automated board showing which service is due next
and how long until it arrives. You need to pay when you board (put the right
amount of coins in the machines) or touch the machine with your plastic
pre-loaded Metromani travel card. Each journey anywhere in the city costs
50 tetri. You can load your Metromani card at any metro station or use the
Express Pay machines at the bus stops.
CABLE CAR & FUNICULAR
There is a cable car from the Rike Park to Narikala Fortress offering spectacular
views of the city: one of the cars even has a glass floor. It costs just 1 Lari
and you can use your Metromani card. The funicular railway that runs up to
Mtatsminda Mountain was opened in 1905 and was recently renovated. It
costs 2 Lari: Metromani cards are not accepted.
SIGHTSEEING
ESSENTIAL TBILISI
Tbilisi sits in a river valley, surrounded by hills and mountains. There are so many
beautiful views of the city, each time you see a new one you think it might
just be better than the last. Narikala Fortress and Mother Georgia, Mtatsminda
Mountain and from Metekhi Church, all have stunning vistas. Taking the cable
car or funicular up, or just walk, and you will be rewarded with a panoramic
perspective that also provides fantastic way to orientate yourself. There are
many sights in the city and we have listed many of them for you, but one of the
best ways to appreciate Tbilisi is just to wander its streets, particularly in the Old
Town and Avlabari. Move away from arguably over-renovated areas and into the
warren of backstreets. The buildings may be ramshackle and tired, but they are
beautiful and real. This is Tbilisis heart and soul. Get yourself lost here for a while.

Opened in 2012, a cable car connects Rike Park on the left bank of the Mtkvari
