Selection of Springs and Valve Plates
Valve quantities and sizes have been selected for Superior compressor cylinders to provide a
balance between performance, reliability, and serviceability. Since any cylinder is capable of
application over a wide range of operating conditions, each valve size can be configured
with different springs and valve plates. Each valve configuration has a unique part number
for identification.
Superior selects valves for cylinders based on the operating conditions provided by the
customer at the time of order. The information required for valve selection is listed in the
table below. The full range of expected conditions should be included. If the conditions are
expected to change over a long period of time, then initial conditions should be identified
so that valves are selected for that initial period. When a compressor is applied at conditions
other than those originally stated, it is recommended that Ajax-Superior be consulted for
review of the valves.

The current standard valve plate material is called MT, a proprietary, high temperature
plastic developed for Hoerbiger Corporation. Prior to the introduction of MT, nylon and
PEEK were standard and they continue to be available for service. All three materials are
physically interchangeable. Steel plates may be used in unloader valves under high pressure
conditions. The table that follows lists application information for plate material.

When it is desirable to change plate materials, it is simple to derive the new valve part
number. For example, valve part number 625-236-103 contains a nylon plate; the MT plate
version replacement is 625-236-603.
