RIP Essay:
Peer Review for John Macaulay

1. Has the writer clearly spent time analyzing audience reception?

a. The writer has clearly spent time analyzing audience reception
as shown through the many outside sources used to illustrate his point. Many
statistics were placed in order to show that his point is related to his horror
film and to display the credibility of his work. The writer constantly refers
back to how the characters in the film correlate with students here at UCI.
2. Does the writer clearly describe the medium and genre used for their project and
discuss how specific conventions expected of texts in that medium and genre were
targeted?
a. Right off the bat, the writer describes to the readers the central
idea of what the horror film will be about: a commonly used horror trope
called Artifact of Death. The writer establishes that for his project, he will
be creating and producing a horror film with his team to exhibit the relation
between the pressure the characters are feeling in the movie with the
pressure UCI students are put on by expectations. This was specifically
targeted to the UCI students, the main audience of the film.
3. Does the writer clearly describe what she wants the audience to know, feel, and
think and how those receptions were designed?
a. In particular:
i. How did it appeal to the audience? (UCI, college
student, scholars) What specific references do you make that only
someone from UCI might understand? What specific elements did you
include that cater specifically to scholarspeople who are academically
interested in the content?
1. This film will have a huge appeal
to the target audience (the UCI students) because it is
something they can relate to, as I have said before. It is about
struggling college students who, through the stress, frustration,
and pressure being bottled inside, suffer and inflict harm on
themselves as coping mechanisms. Not much specific
references were made.
ii. How did it meet their expectations? (audiences
expect certain elements(conventions/tropes) as part of a particular genre or
medium) How did you arrange visuals, for example, on a slide, to make
sure they would appeal to your audience?
1. The writer is clear in how he
expects the audience to react to his horror film. He wants them
to realize the horrors of self-inflicted pain and how this type of
coping mechanism is happening out there whether it be in
different schools in the country or UCI itself. This is something
horrible that is currently happening. This film tries to give
light to that issue. There werent any visuals.
iii. How did it grow out of the need to meet the
conventions of your particular genre/medium? What elements were
necessary because of your genre and mediumfor example, if its a song,
its conventional to have a stanzas and a chorus, rhyming, rhythm, etc.
1. There werent much unexpected
things in this essay or horror film. Many of the ideas being
presented seemed conventional and straight to the point. Self-
harm caused by stress and pressure of expectations in school
and life is what needs to be addressed. This writer makes that
clear and cut. This film will include different elements such as
sound effects, manipulation of camera cuts and angles, and
even lighting effects that will add even more dramatic effect to
the situation being presented.
iv. Why was a particular piece of information
important to include in the content because of your purpose?
1. The most important piece of
information being included in the content were the references
being made throughout the essay. It shows credibility through
outside resources and shows the audience or readers that the
metaphor being presented is omnipresent in our world.
v. How does it reflect your cultural situation? Or what
element did your group intentionally include so that it would reflect this
situation and speak to it? (what element, if it were seen/read/heard by
someone from a completely different culturea different
location, different age, different culture and country entirelywould make
no sense? If you can identify elements that way, you know they grew out
of your own cultural context).
1. Personally, growing up, I was
always taught that education was a priority. This set the bar
high. Expectations needed to be reached and were set higher
every time. Stress and pressure were only few of the things
many people felt, including myself, when challenging times
were occurring. I think the writer and his group are going to
do really well in helping the audience reflect the situation of the
characters and relate it back to their own lives.
4. Does the writer clearly describe what he/she intends as the primary message of
the text? Has the writer distinguished between purpose and message? Also, are the
purpose/message of the text related to an analytical point that was discussed in class?
a. The writer does clearly describe his intent using the primary
message of the text/horror film: self-inflicted pain, suffering, and agony as a
result of school and life. The purpose and message being presented relates
immensely to the audience.
5. Has the writer addressed the group situation with some insight and engaging
examples?
a. For this question, I am not positively sure. However, I feel as if
the writer has given some insight and engaging examples to better his and his
groups work.

Peer Review Questions for RIP Essay

1. Has the writer clearly spent time analyzing audience reception?

The writer has made it clear to the reader who his audience is and who he is adhering to. The
writer also makes the claim on what his groups film is portraying and how it will relate to his
audience.
2. Does the writer clearly describe the medium and genre used for their project and discuss how
specific conventions expected of texts in that medium and genre were targeted?
The writer describes how his group is incorporating many different horror genre aspects into
their film. This includes the use of horror tropes and specific dialog in order to get a stronger
response from the audience. Along with this, the writer also talks about how his group will
produce their film in such a way that runs parallel to popular horror films. This includes the use
of specific camera angles and eerie music. The writer could elaborate more on how the film is
working with the horror genre by bringing up specific quotes and scenes from the film.

3. Does the writer clearly describe what she wants the audience to know, feel, and think and how
those receptions were designed?
In particular:
How did it appeal to the audience? (UCI, college student, scholars) What specific references do
you make that only someone from UCI might understand? What specific elements did you
include that cater specifically to scholarspeople who are
academically interested in the content? How did it meet their expectations? (audiences expect
certain elements (conventions/tropes) as part of a particular genre or medium) How did you
arrange visuals, for example, on a slide, to make sure they would appeal to your audience?
How did it grow out of the need to meet the conventions of your particular genre/medium? What
elements were necessary because of your genre and mediumfor
example, if its a song, its conventional to have a stanzas and a chorus, rhyming, rhythm,
etc.
Why was a particular piece of information important to include in the content because of your
purpose?
How does it reflect your cultural situation? Or what element did your group intentionally
include so that it would reflect this situation and speak to it? (what element, if it were
seen/read/heard by someone from a completely different culturea different location, different
age, different culture and country entirelywould make no sense? If you can identify elements
that way, you know they grew out of your own cultural context).
The writer specifically claims what audience the film will play into and how it will do that. The
audience is UCI students and scholarly individuals. The film will play into these audiences by
portraying basic struggles of university students, as well as be filmed in popular places around
the UCI campus. This helps play into the overall horror of the film because it is relatable to the
target audience. The use of horror tropes allows the group to use their film to play into the
audiences expectations of the horror genre. Tropes such as Dark means Death is a common
horror trope that can help signify to the audience that death is foreshadowed. An important piece
of information to include in their content was the monologue by Madyln because this scene
explains her reason for killing and also portrays the internal struggles of pressured university
students. This also represents the cultural situation of the film because it symbolizes the stress
that is put on students to succeed and the lengths at which they will try to succeed.

4. Does the writer clearly describe what he/she intends as the primary message of the text? Has
the writer distinguished between purpose and message? Also, are the purpose/message of the text
related to an analytical point that was discussed in class?
The writer does include what the primary purpose the film is portraying. The writer could
include more detail on how the film and dialog play into the overall theme and message. The
message is relatable to the analytical point discussed in class because it symbolizes the monster
within and analyzes how this can affect individuals

5. Has the writer addressed the group situation with some insight and engaging examples?
The writer has included some examples but can include more that are directly from their film that
relate to topics discussed in class. This can be relating their text to Noel Carrols art horror
monster or to compare the internal struggle that Nevile from I Am Legend to the internal struggle
that Madyln faces.
