VALVES FOR WATER WORKS PURPOSES
PART 1 SINGLE-DOOR PATTERN

( First Revision )
0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Indian
Standards Institution on 31 July 1984, after the draft finalized by the
Sanitary Appliances and Water Fittings Sectional Committe had been
approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council.

0.2 This standard was first published in 1969. The revision of this
standard is taken up to incorporate changes necessary in light of the
comments received from users as well as manufacturers. In this revision,
modifications relating to materials for various components, coating, flange
requirements and testing procedure for reflux values have been
incorporated. The pressure rating has also been modified with a view to
have a unified pressure classifications for daerent types of valves for
water works purposes.

0.3 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this

standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,
expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance with
IS : 2-1960*. The number of rignificant places retained in the rounded
off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this
standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard ( Part 1 ).covers requirements for flanged reflux valves
of single door, swing check type used for water works purposes of sixes 50
to 600 mm.

Rules for rounding off numerical values ( rwi.~ud).

IS : 5312 ( Part 1) - 1984

2. NOMINAL PRESSURE
2.1 Reflux valves shall be designated by nominal pressure ( Pi\; ) defined
as maximum permissible gauge working pressure ! MPa ). The nominal
pressure for the various sizes shall be as follows:
Sizes of Vahes J mind Ircssure

mm MPa
50 to 125 1.6

150 to 300 1.0

330 to GO0 0.6

3. NOMINAL SIZES

3.1 Reflux valves shall be of the following nominal sizes:

50, 65, 80, 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, 500 and
600 mm.
3.1.1 The nominal size shall refer to the nominal bore of the water
way. The actual bore at any point shall not be less than the nominal
size given in 3.1.

4. MATERIALS
4.1 The materials used for the manufacture of different component parts
shall conform to the requirements given in Table 1. Where alternative
materials are specified in Table 1, these may be used subject to its
stipulation in the contract or order.

5. MANUFACTURE

5.1 Typical illustrations of reflux valves are given in Fig. 1, 2 and 3.

5.2 The dimensions of the valves shall be as in Table 2, read with
Fig. 1, 2 and 3.
5.3 All the parts of the valves shall be designed so as to withstand the
test pressures given in Table 5.
5.4 The dimensions and shapes of the body, door, cover, etc, shall be
suitable to ensure that the area for flow passage at any cross section in
the valve is not less than the area of the nominal bore of the valve.
5.5 The design of the hinges, hinge pin, door, door suspension, etc, shall
be suitable to ensure free swinging of the door. In the closed position of
the valve, the door face shall have close Bee contact with the body ring.

6. COATING

6.1 Immediately after casting and before machining, all cast iron parts
shall be thoroughly cleaned, and before rusting commences shall be coated
by dipping in a bath containing a composition having a tar base and
maintained at a temperature between 143 and 166C. The proportions
of the ingredients of the-composition shall be so regulated as to produce a
coating having the properties specified in 6.3. .
NOTE 1 -The valves may be assembled without coating if the purchasing
organization specially desires to inspect the assembled valves without any coating.
NOTE 2 - From every bath one piece of smallest size and one piece of largest
size should be tested for coating. Alternatively, for tar based paints the represen-
tative test piece 150 mm x 100 mm x 10 mm each bath of casting shall be subjected
to coating test from each bath.

6.2 The casting shall be reheated before dipping, either by immersion in

hot water or by heating in an oven, or shall be held in the dipping bath
sufficiently long to reach an equivalent temperature, the method used
being at the manufacturers option. Care shall be taken to see that the
castings are perfectly dry immediately before dipping. On removal from
the bath the castings shall be sufficiently drained.

10.1.1 Each valve may be marked with the ISI Certification Mark.

NOTE -The ure of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisiona of
the Indian Stbdardr Institution (Certification Marks ) Act and the Ruler and
Regulations made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on products covered by an Indian
Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the
requirements of that rtandard under a well-defined syrtem of inspection, tertin and
quality control which is devised and rupervised by IS1 and operated by the p rfn! ucer,
IS1 marked products are also continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to that
standard aa a further safeguard. Detaila of conditions under which a licence for tbo
use of the IS1 Certification Mark may. be granted to manufacturen or pmceaon,
may be obtained from the Indian Standarda Institution.
