Transitioning to OpenRoads Technology

What does it take to move to Bentley Civil V8i

SELECTseries3? What is the impact to standards as well as
users? This workshop will attempt to answer those questions
in a way that will assist organizations in their transition from
SELECTseries 2 to SELECTseries 3 functionality.

Should I stay on SELECTseries 2 or move to
SELECTseries 3?

Advantages of Moving Ahead

SELECTseries 3 the first release on the OpenRoads technology

more to come!
Comfort of many of legacy toolsets.
Slowly transition by project or functional group
Great new tools for productivity enhancement!

Native Product Changes

Roadway Designer modeling application removed and replaced

by OpenRoads modeling technology
Removed Site Modeler commands / application superseded by
OpenRoads modeling technology
Roundabout tools removed and replaced by OpenRoads
technology
Install procedure allows SELECTseries 3 to be installed
concurrently with SELECTseries 2.

Native Product Changes - GEOPAK

Corridor modeling application removed and replaced by

OpenRoads functionality.
Ability to cut cross sections from a .DTM file was removed from
the Draw Cross Sections application.
Improved integration between ProjectWise and the geometry
database (.GPK)
Added new Cross Section Drawing, Earthwork and Sheeting
capability through the OpenRoads tools.

Deployment Options

1. Do not deploy

2. By pilot project, then expand to more projects

3. Deploy by functional group

4. Deploy by geographic location

5. Deploy enterprise-wide

Can I run SS2 and SS3 on the same machine?

13 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Installation Considerations

SELECTSERIES 2 TO SELECTSERIES 3 OR BOTH?

Can only load one version of MicroStation (layered)

SELECTseries 3 dependency on MS 08.11.09.397

Set-up / testing - Both can be loaded on same workstation

Power products great alternative!

Caution using resources in both versions

Theres a lot of set-up to any software upgrade.
What can I reuse and what do I have to recreate?

17 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Resource Usage
Reuse:
MS levels, fonts, cells, line styles
Element templates Create:
DGN Libraries Element templates
Survey TIW files Graphical filters
XIN, DDB, SMD (XML) DGN libraries
XSL style sheets (reporting) Project settings
And Much More! Civil cells

Upgrade:
Template library add superelevation flag
Design Standards add vertical

18 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Design Standards - Review horizontal and vertical Design
Standards validate local standards

19 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Superelevation Standards

SEP and SRL are supported.

Superelevation tables do you
have your standards
currently set up and in
production?
Add super flag to template

20 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Should partially completed projects be moved to
SELECTseries 3 or completed in
SELECTseries 2?

21 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Considerations

Has 3D corridor modeling started in earnest?

Built in transitions, supers, target aliasing
IRD is not upward compatible
Tight time frame (i.e., MAP-21 funding)?
Preservation project with shortened design schedule?

22 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Im a consultant whose does work for the DOTs. Can I switch
before them? How can I encourage them to switch?

23 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Considerations

Dependent on contract language.

Often standards in place on date of contract signing
Deliverables
Terrain, coordinate geometry export back to native
Corridor is not backward compatible opened in SS2 is viewable.
Standards
State transportation agency may not have created yet.

24 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Should I bypass SS3 and just wait for SS4?

25 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

I downloaded and installed the software and Im
thoroughly overwhelmed.. Where do I start?

What is a MicroStation Workspace?

A custom MicroStation environment or configuration.

By selecting a defined workspace, you customize MicroStation for a

specific discipline, project, task, or standard.

Civil Workspace

31 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Advance Preparation - MicroStation

Review current MicroStation resources are they in DGNLibs or

can they go there? How are XIN, and DDBs affected?
Development of MicroStation element templates and graphical
filters (such as for terrain models)
Review CAD standards changes due to Corridor Modeling,
geometry, use of reference files

32 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Advance Preparation - Civil

Review Design File Settings within Seed Files Determine

default settings for Civil Formatting
Review Workspace Preferences View Options > Civil
Review new configuration variables
Review new workflows and determine which areas may be
moved forward to new methods.
Are there any customized workflows that need to be integrated?
Review reports; determine defaults, deficiencies

33 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Advance Preparation - Engineering

Review horizontal and vertical design standards validate local

standards.
Superelevation tables
Do you have your standards currently set up and in production?
Do you follow AASHTO standards or use customized standards?

Workflow

What's the difference?

Survey Data in DGN
Terrain in DGN
Alignments in DGN
Superelevation in DGN
Corridors in DGN
Site Models in DGN

Workflow

Just Reference the data you need.

It is all file management
The way you break files up depends on:
Your organization
The Project
The amount of interactive change you want

What is the hype about civilized cells?

43 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

They are CIVIL cells!

44 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Why Are CIVIL Cells Important?

Repeatable geometric modeling

Organizations can create civil cells to reflect design standards

User can re-use previously stored geometric configurations, but

adjust for project specific details

45 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | 2013 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

Good News About Civil Cells

Very powerful addition to Open Roads technology

Sample libraries provided with installation package
NOT mandatory for SS3 deployment
Best Practice:
Avoid temptation to jump in to a new cool feature
Keep it simple!
Get familiar with Open Roads geometry and corridor modeling
Review standards to earmark potential candidates
Poll users on usability and prioritize
