Why is literature important?

1. To explore other cultures and beliefs

Explanations: History, anthropology and religious studies

provide a method of learning about the cultures and
beliefs of others from the outside looking in. Literature
on the other hand, allows you to experience the cultures
and beliefs of others first hand, from the inside looking
out. The only other way to have such a personal
understanding of others belief are to adopt them
yourself- which most of us arent willing to do. If you
understand where other people are coming from , you
are better equipped to communicate meaningfully with
them-and they with you.

2. To appreciate why individuals are the way they are

Explanations: Each person we meet represents a unique

concoction of knowledge, beliefs, and experiences. In
our own culture, we find an infinite variety of attitudes
and personalities, hatreds and bigotries and
assumptions. With each exposure to those who differ
from us, we expand our mind

3. It gives you information about other parts of the world

Explanations: Literature helps readers to explore parts of the world. It gave readers
information on what is present in different countries. It serves as a tool and be a
traveler by the help of literature.

4. It entertains you and provides useful occupation in your free time

Explanations: Reading literature is a pleasurable, entertaining activity that offers

readers the potential to escape from the troubles of daily life. Above all else,
literature survives because of its capacity to entertain readers. Literature also has
the power to provoke thought in readers, making it a leisure activity that is also
intellectually productive.

5. Readers can gain experiences through literature they would never have access to in
ordinary life

Explanations: Literature also has the power to impart a wide variety of experiences
to readers. A story can expose readers to different places, time periods, viewpoints
and cultures. Literature's ability to capture the imagination and depict the lives of
others also increases readers' ability to empathize with others

6. Literature helps develop critical-thinking skills.

Explanations: A study published in the journal Science found that readers of literary
fiction demonstrated an increased ability to infer other people's thoughts and
emotions. Readings and discussions of literature force readers to make reasoned
judgments about character motivations, cause and effect, critical analysis of plot
and more.
