Solve each problem using a system of equations. Make sure you write your answers in
a complete sentence.

1. If 8 pens and 7 pencils cost $3.37 while 5 pens and 11 pencils cost $3.10, how
much does each pen and pencil cost?
One pen cost $.29 and one pencil cost $.15.

2. A rectangle has a perimeter of 18 cm. Its length is 5 cm more than its width. Find
the dimensions.
The width is 2 cm and the length is 7 cm.

3. Timmy has 180 marbles, some plain and some colored. If there are 32 more plain
marbles than colored marbles, how many colored marbles does he have?
There are 74 colored marbles.

4. Ryan and Karl spent 28 hours building a tree house. Ryan worked 4 more hours
than Karl. How many hours did each work?
Karl worked 12 hours and Ryan worked 16 hours
5. Jimmy had $5.25 in nickels and quarters. If he had 15 more nickels than quarters,
how many coins of each type did he have?
There are 15 quarters and 30 nickels.

6. The sum of two numbers is 32. One number is 4 more than the other. Find the
numbers.
The two numbers are 14 and 18.

7. Tickets for a school football game cost $1.00 each if purchased before the day of
the game. They cost $1.50 each if bought at the gate. For a particular game, 600
tickets were sold, with receipts of $700. How many tickets were sold at the gate?
There were 200 tickets sold at the gate.
