To evaluate and implement the Project Quality Plan for painting per applicable
procedures, specifications and codes.
Understand the applications, parameters and mechanics involved in the project
paint/coating procedures.
Review and implement performance inspection procedures of all site paint/coating
activities.
To determine and evaluate atmospheric conditions pertinent to Dew Points and
paint applications.
Ensure that consumables are stored, issued and maintained per the requirements of
the quality system and/or applicable codes..
To inspect shop applied automatic coatings and field applied manual applications.
Review and comment on paint/coating subcontractors quality procedures before
they are sent to Resident QA/QC Manager for approval.
Review and comment on the paint/coating subcontractors inspection tracking
system.
Inspect and report the paint/coating subcontractors operator training/testing
programs.
Review and report on paint/coating Operator Qualification Procedures, record
maintenance, and witness related activities.
Supervise the paint/coating activities and audit/report evaluation techniques..
Coordinate paint/coating QC inspection schedule activities with other project
schedules.
Ensures subcontractor adherence to their paint/coating procedures and that those
procedures have been approved by client

Surface Profile

Standard: ISO 8502-2, ASTM D4417, NACE RP0287

Instrument used: Elcometer 124 Thickness Gauge and Elcometer 122 Testex Replica
Tape
Elcometer 122 Coarse Minus 12 - 25m (0.5 to 1mil)

Elcometer 122 Coarse 20 - 64m (0.8 - 2.5mils)

Elcometer 122 X-Coarse 38 - 115m (1.5 - 4.5mils)

Elcometer 122 X-Coarse Plus 115 - 127m (4.5 - 5.0mils)

Rust Grades

Standard: ISO 8501-1

Dust Assessment

Standard: ISO 8502-3

Weather Monitoring

Standard: ISO 8502-4

Salt Test

Standard: ISO 8502-5

Standard: ISO 8502-6

Instrument used: Elcometer 138 Bresle Salt Kit

DFT Measurement

Standard: SSPC PA2, ISO 12944 and ISO 2808

Instrument used: Elcometer 456 Integral and Separate Digital Coating Thickness
gauges,
Elcometer 415 Paint and Powder Gauge

To determine the number of tests required if the surface area is greater than 1,000
sq ft, use the following formula to determine the minimum number of areas to test:

3 + [(SFC AREA) -1000) / 1,000] = Number of Test Areas

Number of Test Areas X 5 = Number of Spot Readings
Number of Spot Readings X 3 = Number of Gage readings

1000 sq ft = 92 m2

Holiday Testing

Standard: ASTM D5162

Adhesion Test

Standard: ASTM D4541

Instrument used: Elcometer 510 Automatic Pull-Off Adhesion Gauge

Elcometer 106 Pull Off Adhesion Tester

ISO 8502 consists of the following parts, under the general title Preparation of steel substrates before application of
paint and related products Tests for the assessment of surface cleanliness:

Part 1: Field test for soluble iron corrosion products [Technical Report]

Part 2: Laboratory determination of chloride on cleaned surfaces

Part 3: Assessment of dust on steel surfaces prepared for painting (pressure-sensitive tape method)

Part 4: Guidance on the estimation of the probability of condensation prior to paint application

Part 5: Measurement of chloride on steel surfaces prepared for painting Ion detector tube method

Part 6: Sampling of soluble impurities on surfaces to be painted Bresle method

Part 7: Analysis of soluble impurities on surfaces to be painted Analysis methods for field use for oil
and grease

Part 8: Analysis of soluble impurities on surfaces to be painted Analysis methods for field use for
moisture

St3 Very thorough hand and power tool cleaning

As per ISO 8501-1

SA3 - No staining allowed

Sa 21/2 - maximum 5% staining allowed
To find out professional solution between Sa2.5 & Sa3 - Take 5% copper sulphate
solution & sprinkle on blaster surface . If there is mill scale it will turn on dark blue
because cooper sulphate is cathodic to steel.
