Summaries what will the report cover each lab will be different and show a different
aspect of the theory. The introduction should be a route map to the report. This is ok
for a standard lab, but there are those which need more thought.
Students should comment on what you as demonstrators said was the background
of the lab and why it is relevant to chemical and process engineering.
2. Experimental Details
A summary record of the experimental methods applied e.g what did your system
consist of, what did it measure.
(Flow diagram, experimental procedure should be contained in your log book, which
will have been signed off by the demonstrator at the end of your laboratory session)
List the physical properties of the fluids used that are relevant to the lab e.g.
Density, viscosity, heat capacity, latent heat
Quote your reference sources
This section could be shorter in some cases depending what the experiment
measures. What is important is to record the ranges and numerical accuracy of he
instrument e.g
Tabulate and present a graph of results (if a graph is useful). The table should show
a reference number to raw data (if thats needed) but must show derived results and
an estimation of the error on the calculated quantities
Discuss these derived results in relation to theory (quote the reference), highlight any
differences. Comment on the error that you have calculated will this be significant.
For experiments which have more than one data set, discuss each set in turn e.g the
Unsteady state flow experiments has 2 parts; unsteady state part and constant flow
part. Split this into 2 sections in the discussion.
Please seek advice from the demonstrator how best to present the data that you
need.
This section we think should be more like a Journal paper where a figure or table
is presented and discussed, then the text moves on. Traditionally, reports have been
results in one section and discussion in another. Many students dont deviate from
this pattern even though logically they should.
4.Summary of Findings
A synopsis of the main findings, comments on any deviations from theory observed.
5.Appendix
Your appendix is to provide additional supporting material. Only include this section if
it is necessary. Appendix can include:
a) Full sample calculation
b) Raw data that is not included into section 3
