Abstract

After, we put in baking soda and vinegar into the rocket, laterally it reacts
each other. They both have have a lots of energy that they dont want
and they will help togethers to release it out. This is simple explanation,
if look more detail, An acid is a chemicals that expel the proton, which
mean positively charged hydrogen atom. The base which is baking soda,
who want a proton therefore, when it react each others, acid-base
reaction will occur. Baking soda is the bicarbonate (NaHCO 3) and
vinegar is an acetic acid (HCH3COO) and this reaction creates carbon
dioxide, which is make the gas explosion what you have seen.

Introductions

This experiment, we uses baking soda and vinegar to react with each
other because of an acid-base reaction. Baking soda is a bicarbonate
(NaHCO3) sodium bicarbonate. Its chemical formula is NaHCO 3, mixture
of one sodium atom, one hydrogen atom, one carbon atom, and three
oxygen atoms. Vinegar is an acetic acid (HCH3COO) which is mixture of
acetic acid and water, so its chemical formula is CH3COOH. An acid is
positively charged hydrogen atom and rid of a proton. The base
is a chemical that wants a proton. When you mix both acid and
base, its will make the reaction, CH3COOH + NaHCO3 CO2 +
H2O + CH3COONa. Looking deeper, acid and base break apart
and react. Baking soda apart into a positively-charged sodium
ion (Na+) and a negatively charged bicarbonate ion (HCO 3-). The
vinegar, which is Acetic acid wont break apart in water as much as
sodium bicarbonate form baking soda. In the reaction, acetic acid will
gives a proton to the broken-apart baking soda and then they form a
sodium acetate (CH3COONa),
water (H2O), and carbon dioxide (CO2). These reaction will creates
quickly, and the carbon dioxide will comes out as a gas.

Objectives
To understand how chemical reaction work to launching and make the
rocket reach on the target.

Results and data tables

Analysis of data

From the previous page of data tables, its show that the best result was
using a 45 degree base and using 400 ml of vinegar mix with 44.8 g of
baking soda which got the distance of 18m, but we did not hit the target.
The second trials didnt cover any distance due to the fact that the cork
didnt close tightly and it make the rocket failed to launched. Baking soda
and vinegar ratio is important, calculation should be made before trying.
Angles is another factor to helps rocket fly.

Discussion: Calculation and Suggestions

Calculations
Vinegar: CH3COOH (400ml)

Mol = g/molar mass = 20/60.05 = 0.333 mol

Baking: NaHCO3 (44.8g)

Mol = g/molar mass = 44.8/84.01 = 0.533 mol

CH3COOH + NaHCO3 CO2 + H2O + CH3COONa

(0.3 mol) + (0.5 mol) (0.5 mol)

(400 ml) + (44.8 g) (22 g)

- Baking Soda is limiting reagent

Mistakes and Suggestions

While this doing this project, weve discovered that our rocket accuracy wasnt so
good but the chemicals, speeds and the distance it's goes is good. The chemical
above which is 400 ml of vinegar and 44.7 g of baking soda is the best ratio that
made the rocket flew the furthest. Our mistake was that we didnt know which is most
important factor that would make the rocket fly straight and furthest. Our rocket were
made by a big water bottle, which is not really good the base is not so strong and
thats is another problems of ours.

Our suggestions is to try and use a small bottle, because it will need less chemicals
to produce a perfect amount of gas and it will also helps in control of itself. Make
sure to calculate the best amount of chemical before trying it out. For designs my
rocket use a fins that is angled which is to make the accuracy better, but however
after a while it's got a little loose and make the rocket not going straight. So another
suggestion is to think carefully when designing it and make sure to make to strong
and use the best affords to make your rocket.

Conclusions

The combination between vinegar and baking soda will make the chemical reaction
which produced the carbon dioxide. These will make the pressure for the rocket to
launch. The amount of the pressure to launch the rocket will depend on the amount of
the vinegar. If the amount of the vinegar is decreased, the distance of the rocket after
launch will also decreased. The rocket that go accuracy and hit the target is the
rocket that have proper amount of the chemical. The appropriately weight and good
design of the rocket also important to make it goes straight and farther.
