5.3.1 Management Information Base (MIB) Files

MIB files are used for SNMP remote management of a unique device. A MIB file consists of a
tree of nodes called Object Identifiers (OIDs). Each OID provides remote management of a
particularfunction.TheseMIBfilesshouldbecompiledinausersuppliedMIBBrowserorSNMP
NetworkMonitoringSystemserver.ThefollowingMIBfilesareassociatedwiththeCDM840:

5.3.2 SNMP Community Strings

In SNMP v1/v2c, the SNMP Community String is sent unencrypted in the SNMP
packets.CautionmustbetakenbythenetworkadministratortoensurethatSNMP
packetstravelonlyoverasecureandprivatenetworkifsecurityisaconcern.

The CDM840 uses Community Strings as a password scheme that provides authentication
before gaining access to the CDM840 Agent MIBs. They are used to authenticate users and
determineaccessprivilegestotheSNMPAgent.

Type the SNMP Community String into the usersupplied MIB Browser or Network Node
Managementsoftware.

6.2 Remote Commands and Queries Overview

6.2.1 Basic Protocol

InanEIA232configuration,theControllerdeviceisconnecteddirectlytotheTargetdeviceviaatwowireplusgroundconnection.All
dataistransmittedinframedpacketsasasynchronousserialcharacters,suitablefortransmissionandreceptiontotheControllerusinga
universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART). ControllertoTarget data is carried via EIA232 electrical levels on one conductor,
andTargettoControllerdataiscarriedintheotherdirectionontheotherconductor:

ControllertoTarget: The Controller device (e.g., the user PC/CLI) is used to transmit instructions (commands) to or to
requestinformationfrom(queries)theTargetdevice(i.e.,theCDM840).

TargettoController:TheTarget,inreturn,onlytransmitsresponseinformationtotheControllerwhenspecificallydirectedby
theController.

For Serial Remote Control, all issued commands (ControllertoTarget) require a response (TargettoController). This response is

6.2.2.2 Target Address

InEIA232applications,thisvalueissetto0000.

The Target Address designates the packet destination. The Controller does not have its own address. After the
Controller sends a packet with the designated Target Address, the Target responds to the Controller, using this
same address, to indicate the source of the packet.

6.2.2.5 Instruction Code Qualifier

Thisisasinglecharacterthatfurtherqualifiestheprecedinginstructioncode.CodeQualifiersobeythefollowingrules:

FromControllertoTarget,theonlypermittedcharactersare:

Character Definition
= This character is used as the Assignment Operator (AO). It establishes that the Instruction Code that precedes it is to
(ASCII code 61) be used as a command to assign or configure operation. The instruction set that follows serves to assign the Targets
new parameter setting or operational value.

Example: In a message from Controller-to-Target, IG1=aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd/yy means set the GE Port IP address to
aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd/yy
? This character is used as the Query Operator (QO). It establishes that the Instruction Code that precedes it is to be used
(ASCII code 63) as a query that returns the Targets current configured parameter setting or operational value.

Example: From Controller-to-Target, IG1? means whats the current GE Port IP address?

FromTargettoController,theonlypermittedcharactersare:

Character Definition
= This character is used in two ways:
(ASCII code 61) a. If the Controller sends a query to the Target for example, IG1? (meaning whats current GE Port IP address?) the
Target responds with IG1= aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd/yy, the value for that queried parameter.
b. If the Controller sends an instruction to set a parameter to a particular value, and the value sent is valid, the Target
acknowledges the message and responds with IG1= (with no message arguments).
? If the Controller sends an instruction to set a parameter to a particular value, and the value sent is not valid, the Target then
(ASCII code 63) acknowledges the message and responds with, for example, SRC? (with no message arguments). This indicates that there
was an error in the message sent by the Controller.

66
CDM-840 Remote Router Revision 1
Serial-based Remote Product Management MN-CDM840

Character Definition
! If the Controller sends an instruction code that the Target does not recognize, the Target responds by echoing the invalid
(ASCII code 33) instruction, followed by !

Example: ABC!
* If the Controller sends the command to set a parameter to a particular value, and the value sent is valid BUT the router will
(ASCII code 42) not permit that particular parameter to be changed at present, the Target acknowledges the message and responds with,
for example, MLC* (with message arguments).
# If the Controller sends a correctly formatted command, BUT the unit is not in Remote Mode, it does not allow
(ASCII code 35) reconfiguration and responds, for example, with MLC#.

6.2.2.6 Optional Message Arguments

Argumentsarenotrequiredforallmessages.ArgumentsareASCIIcodesforthecharacters0to9(ASCIIcodes48to57),period.

by about 30% over DVBS using the same amount of bandwidth. This new type of coding and

LDPC and BCH is also a concatenated error correction technique. LDPC is a very powerful coding

B.2.2 BER, QEF, Eb/No, Es/No Spectral Efficiency, and Occupied Bandwidth
Depending upon the operating mode, the DVB standard uses different modes of specifying
performancewithaunitinIFLoopandAdditiveWhiteGaussianNoise(AWGN):

DVBS2 standard: "Quasi Error Free" (QEF) is defined as "less than one uncorrected
erroreventpertransmissionhouratthelevelofa5Mbit/ssingleTVservicedecoder",
approximately corresponding to a Transport Stream Packet Error Ratio equal to a
PER<107 before demultiplexer. A packet is defined as block of 188 byte MPEG frame

Es/Novs. Eb/No: TheDVBS2standard commonly refers tothe useof Es/No insteadof

C.1.2 RAN Inefficiency

The 2G/3G RAN design is not efficient for satellite backhaul. For example, in the GSM Abis

signaling,voiceanddataperTransceiver(TRX).

C.2 E1 RAN Optimization

Jointly developed by Comtech EF Data, CEFD sister division Comtech AHA Corp., and CEFD
subsidiary Memotec Inc., RAN Optimization technology significantly reduces the Wide Area
Network(WAN)/satellitebandwidthrequiredtocarryanE1bearerusedforcellularbackhaul.

RAN Optimization allows the transmit modem data rate to be reduced relative to the input
terrestrialdatarate,thusallowingthetransportofauserselectablechannelsubsetofbearerE1
usinglessbandwidth.Inthereceivedirection,thedataisrestoredtotheE1formatfortransport
overtheG.703E1interface.

The process is designed to allow varying levels of optimization to accommodate the incoming
terrestrial data in the reduced modem data rate. Optimization performance depends on the
traffic profile and the difference between the terrestrial data rate (based on input timeslot
selection) and the transmit modem data rate. The optimization is performed in hardware for
optimalperformance.

Theuserhascompletecontroloverthedesiredlevelofoptimizationbyselectingthetimeslots
to be optimized, and the transmit modem data rate. Depending on the traffic profile, typical
bandwidthreductionof3035%canbeachievedwithlittleornoimpacttothevoicequality.

UsershavetheoptiontoreduceWANbandwidthbyasmuchas60%relativetotheingressdata
rate this allows the users to achieve desired bandwidth savings while maintaining desired
voicequality.

C.2.2 WAN Link Dimensioning and Pre-emptive Bandwidth Management

RANtrafficvariesovertimevariationsduringthedaythatpeakatcertaintime(s),andlonger
term variation as user density/profile(s) changes. The WAN link can be dimensioned to
accommodate the peak traffic, or it can be dimensioned to meet a statistically derived value
(e.g.averagetraffic).

Dimensioning the WAN link for peak traffic may not be economically viable. However,
dimensioning the WAN link for average traffic has its challenges. Specifically: What happens
whentheoptimizedtrafficexceedsWANcapacity?

TypicalofmostothervendorsRANoptimizationsolutions,FigureC4showstheoptimizedAbis

exceedsWANcapacity,packetsaredroppedandthevoicequalitydegradesdramaticallyeven

disastrouseffectsonvoicequalityandcallhandlingtheresultscanincludeclicks,blankcalls,
and eventually call drops, especially if the BCCH channel of the TRX is impacted. In the worst
case,itmayevenleadtoBTSdrop.

Tocompensate,mostothervendorsolutionsareforcedtooverdimensiontheWANlink,which
leads to significant inefficiencies. This methodology should not be acceptable to mobile
operators.AgoodRANoptimizationsolutionshouldbenearlytransparent,andshouldprovide

As implemented by Comtech EF Data, the superior method of handling WAN congestion is to

perform preemptive and selective voice packet discard. Comtech EF Datas RAN Optimization
solutionemploysasophisticatedbandwidthmanagementcapabilitytomaintainServiceQuality.
The signaling and O&M traffic is always protected from being dropped in case of WAN
congestion this ensures that the BTS/NodeB stays connected and synchronized. The
bandwidth manager smoothes peak traffic variation before the optimized RAN traffic reaches
the available WAN capacity this mechanism maintains good voice quality while effectively
reachingtheoptimaltargetoptimizationrate.

even at peak hour traffic load. Implementing a RAN optimization solution without such
capabilityserveslittlepurpose.
