Unit Plan

Unit Dates: March 14-

Grade(s): 1/2 Unit Focus: Soccer Teacher: Mr. Jordan Logan
April 6
Overview:
This unit will guide the students through different means of object manipulation and the most popular sport in the
world, soccer. The unit will break down the basic fundamental skills of soccer: dribbling, passing, and shooting. The
lesson will begin with the dribbling mechanics and work with protecting the ball. Following this will be a series of
passing lessons as the students work on their dribbling skills and then implement the passing mechanics introduced by
the teacher. After this, the unit will work on shooting mechanics while tying in all skills through a series of lessons that
review all of the steps. To wrap up the students will be broken up into teams and play a tournament style series of mini
games that will lead to an eventual champion. Each day will include a conversation about the lifestyle that a healthy
athlete would live and how the students can incorporate those things into their own lives.
Rationale:
This unit was included to provide the students with an alternate form of object manipulation as described in the P.o.S..
The soccer unit breakdown is done in a way that will slowly scaffold essential skills and expose the students to a form
of activity that is so common around the world, but less relevant in their own lives. The mini games at the end of the
unit have been included to have the students experience an actual game situation with soccer. Mini-games will be used
as sponge lessons if for some reason things become shifted around in the unit. I am excited to include the
conversations about healthy lifestyles and have the students actively engaged in a discussion and collaboration with
their team on a subject that often is excluded in the classroom.

Objectives / Learner Outcomes:

A1-1, A1-5, A1-11, B1-7, B1-8, C1-1, C1-3, C1-5, C1-5, D1-2, D1-3, D1-4, D1-7

Key Teaching and Learning Activities:

The key activities throughout the unit will be the instruction of the mechanics and steps as the teacher will not only
model the fundamentals, but also have the students go through a lot of repetition with the skill. The drills will be a
good indicator of the students effort and participation in the unit as it will be directly reflected in their performance.
Another key moment of the unit will be the group discussions and reflections on healthy lifestyles as they put into
context the important of leading a healthy lifestyle and all the benefits it can have.
