REFLECTIVE LEARNING JOURNAL

Week 7 (January 30, 2017 - February 03, 2017)

For the week of January 30, 2017 - February 03, 2017 Ive learned is about

Locating Percentiles Under the Normal Curve it is about locating the z-scores under the

normal curve, but before that you should first convert the given percentiles into the z-

table to identity the z-score. Percentile can be express not only by Percentile but also in

Percentage or in Proportion. Also, I have learned that, how would you know whether you

will add (positive) or minus (negative) the given. So here is the way how to identify it.

Since the both sides are consisting of 50% - if the given value is less than 50% then it is

negative or minus, but if its greater than 50% then it is positive or add. The Applying

the Normal Curve Concepts in Problem Solving in this topic, it will teach us how to

apply the normal curve when there is a situation given

(St. Paul University Systems)

Here is the example of the locating percentiles under the normal curve and the

applying the normal curve concepts in problem solving.

Example: Find the raw score of 30%

Given: = 80 = 15

1st Step: Draw a normal curve. To identify where to locate the given value.

2nd Step: Convert the given value into decimal.

Given Value: 30% is the same as 0.3000. It should be 4 decimal places.

3rd Step: Find the area between z = 0 and 0.2000.

0.5000 0.3000 = 0.2000

St. Paul University Manila
(St. Paul University Systems)

Note: 0.5000 came from the half of the curve since the half of the curve is

both 0.5000. Also, it used the minus (-) sign because the 30% is less than

50%.

4th Step: Find the area of the given (0.2000) or the value nearest to it in the Table

of Areas Under the Normal Curve.

Since in the z-table there are no
The nearest area is 0.1985. 0.2000 we will use the number
that nearest to the given value.

5th Step: Find the value that corresponds to 0.1985.

It means that the z = 0.52
has an area of 0.1985.
z = 0.52 the area 0.1985

6th Step: Find the formula that determining the raw scores.

z = X-

Since the formula was equal to z-score we will derived the formula so that we can

solve the raw scores. And it will be:

X = + z
St. Paul University Manila
(St. Paul University Systems)

7th Step: After getting the formula of the raw score we will substitute the given

value to the formula to solve for X.

. X = + z

Lowest term it to the

X = 80 + (0.52)(15)
whole number

X = 87.8 ~ 88

For me, it is okay to based your understanding in the book because it is the way of

how you learning something for example, you are following how the book answer the

example for you to know how or in what way you will going to answer the question or

the given assignment to you. For me also it is okay to use the examples in the book

because for me, it will be my guide in case Ill lose and also in that way it wont be hard

to explain and to express my thought.

REFLECTIVE LEARNING JOURNAL

Week 8 (February 06 - 10, 2017)

I have learned for the week of February 06 10 is about Sampling Distribution of

Sample Means, Finding the Mean and Variance of the Sampling Distribution of Means

and the previous lesson way back in Grade 10 is the Combination. In sampling

distribution of sample means is a distribution of sample means obtained by selecting all

the possible samples of a specific size from a population. And in finding the mean and

variance of the sampling distribution of means is a looking or finding the mean and the

variance in the sampling distribution using formulas. While the combination is a way of

calculating the event in which is the order is not important. The formula for this is N Cn

where: N = size of the population and n = size of the sample; this formula is used to

determine the number of possible samples that can be drawn from the population.

Here is the example of how to construct the sampling distribution, finding the

mean and variance, and combination:

Example: A population consists of the five numbers 2, 6, 8, 0 and 1. Consider

samples of size 2 that can be drawn from this population.

First step: List all the possible sample and the corresponding mean.

Sample Mean
~ Solve for the combination to know how many
2, 6 4.00 possible sample will have. Use this formula: N Cn

2, 8 5.00
N=5
5C2 = 10
2, 0 1.00
n= 2
2, 1 1.50

6, 8 7.00

6, 0 3.00 To get the Mean:

6, 1 3.50 First, we will add the sample by row

then, we will divide it into two.
8, 0 4.00 Example: 2+6 = 8
8, 1 4.50 8/2 = 4.00

0, 1 0.50

Second step: Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means.

~ Subtract the population mean () from each sample mean ( X ).

~ Square the difference. ( X - )2

~ Multiply the results by the corresponding probability. P( X ) * ( X - )2

~ Add the results to get the variance.

2 = [ P( X ) * ( X - )2]

2 = 3.54

~ To get standard deviation square the answer in the variance.

The things that we have to apply to ourselves is the patience because, in doing or

answering this examples and questions might take too long and can lose your patience.
St. Paul University Manila
(St. Paul University Systems)

Also, doing the procedures and organize things will help you how to be an organized

person because in doing table in these statistics is hard to do in a way that your paper

should be clean and neat or else you wont understand what youve written. In a real-life

situation, it will help you how to arrange things orderly

In the end of my journal I just want to say that I understand the topic well though

some is confusing but still I can cope with it.
