ThetraditionalfounderoftheLamaequednatwaNamlapwho,with
anentourageofwarrior,camefromtheouthailingalaoatorraft
andcoloniedthevariouvalleoftheregion,alegendappropriatedthelaterChimucivilization.The
foundingcitwaChot(todaidentifiedaHuacaChotuna)andthednattraditionallruledfor12
generationwiththelatrulernamedaFempellec,althoughinrealittheperiodofLamaequeculture
proaleganinthe8thcenturCwhenitemergedfromthehadowofthepreviouldominantWari

forcilrelocatedtoChanChan,theChimcapital.Inthiwa,acontinuitinAndeanartpaedthrough
ucceivecultureandiconographucharulerwithcrecent-hapedheaddree,potterform,and
techniqueinmetalworkwereperpetuated.

maiveencloureofvatareaoflandandgolditheprevalentmaterialforallmannerofgoodfrom
odornamenttomak.Certainlnothtodiplatheirwealth,theeliteworetunicemroideredwith
panelofgold;oneurvivingexampleha2000quaregoldaddition,over-izedearpoolingoldand
turquoie,magnificentfeatherheaddree,andevengoldenglove.Theterm'conpicuouconumption'
eemtohaveeencoinedwiththeLamaequeeliteinmind.

TpicalLamaequepotteritheirculptedandpolihedlackwareandtheueofmouldallowedfor
maproduction.Reliefdecorationcaneelaorateandhumanfacewereaddednearthepout,awere
animalfigure.TheMoche-inpireddoule-poutedveelifavouredutwithanintricatelcarved
ridgeandauniqueflaredfoot.xamplehavealoeendicoveredrenderedinilver.

MetalworkwaaLamaequepecialit,particularlgoldworkwheretheallomaterialwaengraved,

ditinctiveLamaequetear-hapedee.TheformmarepreentNamlapathelegendarfirtruler
waaidtohaveproutedwingandflownoffintotheunet.Tumiknivewereuedforceremonieof
humanacrificeinvolvingdecapitationandthefunctionalverionhadharpenedronzelade.
