Subject I (50 points)

Write an article(200- 220 words) for a teenage newspaper starting from the views presented
in the text below, posted on an educational blog by a student:

Why is Education so Important in Our Life?

The first thing that strikes me about education is knowledge gain. Education gives us
knowledge of the world around us and changes it into something better. It develops in us a
perspective of looking at life. It helps us build opinions and have points of view on things in
life. People debate over the subject of whether education is the only thing that gives
knowledge. Some say education is the process of gaining information about the surrounding
world while knowledge is something very different. They are right. But then again,
information cannot be converted into knowledge without education. Education makes us
capable of interpreting things, among other things. It is not just about lessons in textbooks. It
is about the lessons of life. One thing I wish I can do is to provide education for all: no child
left behind and change the world for good! (http://edlab.tc.columbia.edu)

Subject II (50 points)

You have read the extract below as part of a magazine article on "success". Readers were
asked to send in their ideas. You decide to write an argumentative essay (250-270 words)
responding to the points raised in the article.

"Many people want to have a successful career but the problem with having a high
income is that you can become handcuffed to a certain lifestyle. For example, private
education for children, an expensive home, two cars or luxury holidays seem to some to be a
necessary part of life. If you're not careful, you can begin to find that you see yourself purely
in terms of material possessions. On the other hand, would this be a bad thing? Doesn't
everybody ideally want to earn a lot of money? And shouldn't those who do, be free to spend
it as they wish?"

NOT! Ambele subiecte sunt obligatorii. Timp de lucru: 2 ore.
