Leader?

Gravador, John Rio

Sygaco, Kyle Rom

Villarosa, Noraine Abbygale

Topic: Power and Politics
Total Time Allotment: 1 hour

I. Objectives
At the end of this module, the students are expected to:
1. Identify the different tactics of influence
2. Differentiate between power and leadership

II. Motivation
Time allotted: 10 minutes
Activity: Animal Choir
Procedures:
1. Begin by dividing the class into two teams through a count-off.
2. After dividing the class, have the members of each team seated according to their
group numbers.
3. Let each group choose an animal name with two syllables.
4. The choir leader will stand in front of the group to facilitate the animal choir.
5. The first group to commit three faults will be eliminated.

Processing questions:
1. How did the activity strike you?
2. What observations were you able to make?
3. Do you think that your team was effective and very well coordinated? Rate your
teams performance.

III. Main Activity: Whos the Leader?

Time allotted: 20 minutes
Procedures:
1. Participants stand in a circle.
2. One person is asked to leave the room. It will be their task to figure out who the
leader is upon re-entering the room.
3. One person volunteers to be the leader. The leader will initiate an action (such as
clapping their hands, tapping their heads, patting their knee, etc.) and the rest of
the group mimics the action. The leader will change actions and when he/she
does, the rest of the group mimics the new action. The challenge for the group is
to try to observe the leader and change actions in a subtle way, so that the
outsider cannot figure out who the leader is.
4. Continue the action until the outsider guesses who the leader is (they can have 3
guesses), or tell them who it is if they cannot guess correctly.
5. Repeat with a new outsider and a new leader. Continue for several rounds.

Processing questions:
1. How did the activity make you feel? Describe the overall group atmosphere
during the activity.
2. What do you think is the reason behind doing this activity?
3. What situation or thing in real life can you relate the activity with?

IV. Lecturette
Time allotted: 10 minutes

Power is defined by Max Weber as the probability that one actor within a social
relationship will be in position to carry out his own will despite resistance.

Politics refers to structure and process of use of authority and power to effect
definitions of goals, directions and other parameters of organization.

A leader is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a

goal. A leader by its meaning is one who goes first and leads by example, so that
others are motivated to follow him. To be a leader, a person must have a deep-rooted
commitment to the goal that he will strive to achieve it even if nobody follows him.

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an

objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and
coherent.

1. The individuals who are the leaders in an organization, regarded collectively.

2. The activity of leading a group of people or an organization or the ability to do
this.

Leadership involves:
establishing a clear vision,
sharing that vision with others so that they will follow willingly,
providing the information, knowledge and methods to realize that vision, and
coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members and
stakeholders.

A leader steps up in times of crisis, and is able to think and act creatively in difficult
situations.

Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught, although it may be learned and

enhanced through coaching or mentoring. Someone with great leadership skills today
is Bill Gates who, despite early failures, with continued passion and innovation has
driven Microsoft and the software industry to success.

3. The act of inspiring subordinates to perform and engage in achieving a goal.

Processing questions answers:

How did the activity make you feel? Describe the overall group atmosphere
during the activity.
The activity made me feel confident that I could identify people
with traits relating to leadership. The overall group atmosphere during the
activity was one of joy and excitement.
What do you think is the reason behind doing this activity?
The activity tests a student, the outsider, to guess who the leader
is. It examines the students if they know the definitions and qualities of a
good leader.
What situation or thing in real life can you relate the activity with?
In a workplace, there always has to be someone to lead the group.
Like in the activity, the manager takes the first step and the other members
follow so that there will be a smooth flow of activities.

Processing questions:
1. What kind of leader would you prefer?
2. In your opinion, what makes you follow a leader?

V. Application
Time allotted: 5 minutes

The Servant Leaders Oath

In exercising my duties according to these principles, I recognize that my

behavior must set an example of integrity, eliciting trust and esteem from those I
serve. I will remain accountable to my peers and to society for my actions and for
upholding these standards.

Processing questions:
1. How would you commit yourself as a leader?

VI. Reflection
Time allotted: 10 minutes

The Goose Story

Next fall, when you see Geese heading South for the Winter, flying along in V
formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that
way: as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately
following. By flying in V formation the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying
range than if each bird flew on its own.

[People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they
are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the thrust of one
another.]

When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of
trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the
lifting power of the bird in front.

[If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are
headed the same way we are.]

When the Head Goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies
point.

[It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs with people or with geese flying
South.]

Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

[What do we say when we honk from behind?]

Finally, and this is important, when a goose gets sick, or is wounded by gunshots and
falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to
lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly, or until
it dies. Only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch
up with their group.

[IF WE HAVE THE SENSE OF A GOOSE, WE WILL STAND BY EACH OTHER

LIKE THAT.]
